I believe there is a RFU meeting this month to decide on the restructuring of the Prem for next season. Under consideration is the possibility of increasing the Prem to 12 / 14 teams. As we all know this will impact on ALL the leagues below especially Promotion / Relegation. Unless of course they look to fill the additional places with Franchise teams. parachuted directly into the Prem. This will also include No Relegation. Does anyone know when this will happen?

Let’s assume that Worcester will be sucked back in and Ealing will remain in the Chump. In addition we can speculate about Wasps and London Irish.

Wasps are a name. London Irish are a name and a mailing list. I know both are successful amateur clubs, but they have nothing to do with any franchise.

Good point Camquin. How about a franchise backed by Saudi money similar to Newcastle Red Bull? Rihad Rovers ? Dubai Daredevils? The mind boggles. They could play in Yorkshire to balance the geographical presence of the league!!! The sky is the limit….

If someone wants to burn money, a Rugby Premiership side is cheap compared to two F1 teams, a top level Soccer side and everything else Red Bull Sponsor. Etihad used to sponsor Quins, mainly because the Stoop could be seen as planes came into Heathrow. But that means there is Arab sponsorship money. So why not DP World Doncaster - except the old farts at the RFU want it to be in Leeds. Edited by Camquin - 17 Feb 2026 at 21:43 |
