Topic: Do we know what 22/23 looks like? Posted: 23 Mar 2022 at 15:40 |
While we do still have the excitment of the end of this season and the drama it will undoubtedly bring whoever wins the league, do we *actually* know what next season will look like in terms of league size etc? If we do, I think it must have passed me by..??

12 teams.
With a lack of promotion to Premiership, means only one team being promoted from National one.

Or 2 if either Doncaster or Ealing win the League this season AND are successful with their Appeal!

Looking at the promotion issue as a supporter of a CB lib that has no such aspirations, I would like to add my fourpenny worth. The current system is an obvious vested interests cartel. In the interests of rugby as a sport, and not some version of professional wrestling there’s got to be some danger of demotion. So there also has to be a reward for playing well ,i.e.promotion. To reject teams for the current reasons is more of an excuse than a reason. If a team is promoted to the Premiership no doubt it can attract more lucrative sponsorship and afford better facilities. The ability to play good rugby is the only valid criterion for promotion. If one looks at teams promoted from N1 one can see they soon adapt to the higher standard. The same would happen on promotion to the Premiership. England is not doing too well currently. Perhaps it’s the negative attitude of the Premiership cartel that has something to do with it.

| Actually, it has more to do with the number of foreign players in the Premiership. There are a couple of clubs with large numbers. I am just watching last Friday's Premiership Cup match between Newcastle and Leicester. This competition is normally for senior academy players and first teasers recovering from injury. Whilst Leicester's pack and halves demonstrate this, their entire back 5 are foreigners! Time to limit the number of foreign players to say 4 per 23 man squad.

The limit is already two - it is just that due to EU law, nobody counts as foreign.

| We are no longer in the EU so the RFU should apply the limit at all levels.

Time to limit the whole senior squad to 4 nominated non EQP and two on a match day.
And while you're at it abolish the premium marquee player rule. All squad inside the cap.

So The Times article with Sweeney says the Prem clubs agreed to give England extra access to their players, ahead of the world cup by shortening next season in return for a moritorium on relegation.
So if nobody goes up this year will there be promotion but not relegation next year to get an even number in the Prem?
If there is still the prospect of promotion from the Champ next year and assuming nobody gets promoted this year wont they have to change the MSC? Otherwise the Prem is ringfenced at 13 teams...
Or have I missed something?

There is the possibility that a team could be promoted. IF they finish top of the Championship. And pass the MSC audit. And fork out £30m for the 'P' shares. And aren't based in the south-east (too London-centric). Or the north (too northern). Or the far south-west (too inaccessible).

What about if they're 4.1 miles from a London club that's somehow ended up bang in the middle of England? Not that that's gonna happen for a couple of years at least

At present one club is definitely promoted from National 1. Maybe 2.
Five weekends left and 14 pts separate the top 5. But due to being only 15 clubs, leaders Caldy have a match advantage. So next weekend could see some ‘runners’ fall as the fixtures have Leeds v Cambridge (4th) Rosslyn Park (2nd) v Caldy (1st) Sale (3rd) v Cinderford (5th)
A win for Caldy and loss for Cinderford would possibly leave a 19pt gap with four weekends to go. On the other hand a Cinderford win and Caldy loss could narrow the gap to 9pts, and with a Cambridge win still leave Cinderford in 5th and the match advantage still in place.

Moseley have Sale and Cinderford to play at home but the way they played yesterday there is no chance of an upset. 🙄

On the Cambridge post match podcast, there was a suggestion that there was still a possibility that the Championship might be expanded. Has anyone else heard anything to this effect?

I have not seen anything to this effect Camquin - however that doesn't mean a thing. Perhaps we will hear something from our Head Coach when he does a supporters briefing tomorrow night.

National One were preparing for a 16 league team as late as June/July 2021. So, let's be honest, what people are preparing for, won't necessarily have any impact on what actually happens. If Ealing win their legal challenge, then it might be an 11 or 12 team league depending on when the challenge is concluded.
