And time the RFU not only acknowledged this but did more to promote it. Rather than hijack the
Championship 2021-2022 signings and departures thread, where Islander and others have referred to this today, thought I'd start a new thread. And see just what sort of a team Jersey reds could provide from the last 5 or so years. Ok Matt Banana was a little earlier .....These are ex Reds players who went onto a a higher level of rugby.15 Tommy Bell Bath and London Irish 14 Leroy van Dam Aurillac, France 13 Kuki Ma'Afu Tonga 12 Mike Le Bourgeois Wasps 11 Matt Banahan Bath and England 10 Calum Sheedy Bristol and Wales 9 Kieran Hardy Scarlets and Wales 8 Nick Haining Bristol , Edinburgh and Scotland 7 Gary Graham Falcons and Scotland 6 Guy Thompson Wasps and Tigers 5 Will Rowlands Wales 4 Peirce Philips Worcester 3 Simon Kerrod Worcester and England 2 Elvis Taione Tonga 1 Harry Williams Chiefs and England International players in red Thats a tidy looking side, and there'd be quality on the bench too, with the likes of Janco Venter of Namibia, Jerry Sexton and Richard Barrington of Saracens.. I'm sure Islander or others can correct me and add a name or two. CC, you mentioned Brett Herron..... I'm sure too that most Championship Clubs could field a similar team of former players. How about yours ? And my point ? Just to emphasise how much talent does graduate from a Championship club to the premiership and international teams.. If this sort of graduation to a higher level of playing is maintained, just consider that quite a percentage of those playing in the championship this weekend will be full internationals within four of five years

I have had a very quick brainstorm, sure I missed some… and I have ignored the high number of DRs (so 100% Blues) who have gone on to International duties and tried to keep the players as recent as possible. Did have to go back further for a couple but they are worthy additions!
5 (1 on the bench) made it from the Blues Academy before it was abolished due to the RFU changing the cup we’d enter.

Great post Westie. I can't let you get away with listing two tight heads in the front row so I would offer Jake Woolmore (Bears) or my own personal choice Sam Lockwood (Falcons) who lived in St Ouen and visited us with his family last year.

A good line-up Westcoaster. Selection for Reds' 'graduates' XV especially hard at prop (Lockwood, Barrington and Woolmore at l/h, Williams, Kerrod, Ciaran Parker, Jake Armstrong, Alec Clarey at t/h) and back row (Graham, Haining, Thompson, James Freeman, Matt Rogerson). Can't claim Kerrod as a capped England player, yet, but he was named in a training squad... Competition at hooker from Charlie Clare and Nic Dolly, and yes I realise other Champ clubs helped develop these guys too, with Clare playing far more Champ rugby as a Blue than as a Red. Ditto Le Bourgeois. I feel bad throwing a Jersey legend out of your team, but we can't have Kuki Ma'afu in there as he won his Tonga caps before he came to the Island and retired from pro rugby when he left us. Could supplement the back-line with Scott Van Breda or Tom Howe (Wuss), Brett Herron (Quins) or Will Homer (Scarlets). Some of these names have fared better than others of course, but that's the way of things, however they've all had a crack in the top flight... Coaching - Ed Robinson (England and Wasps) |

Will Homer is playing for Richmond today. Looks an elusive runner and great acquisition.

Thanks Islander I'd forgotten Matt Rogerson, now captain at London Irish.
And didn't Dave Markham go on to play at a higher level in France ?

Dave M went to Rouen, who were actually in the third tier in France at that stage. I believe they were promoted in his last season and think he may now - tho' not 100% certain this is current - be in Hong Kong, working as a fitness trainer & playing for Kowloon RFC
