I just posted this in the level 5 forum and wondered what you guys think of it - its an interesting ploy!!
Yesterday in Barum’s match against Maidenhead Barum were awarded a penalty try.
A Maidenhead player got the ball and sprinted to the halfway line and kicked
off before most all of the Barum players had got back in their own half – the ref
was also still way back in the 22. I have never seen this before and was surprised that the ref allowed it to stand so I guess it must be within the laws. Edited by Barum man - 17 Nov 2019 at 16:06 |

I always thought that the receiving team had to be behind or on the 10m line for a restart!

This happened in a Worthing game a couple of years ago - the exception being it was after the conversion had been taken.
End of the day there us no reason for the team kicking off to wait for the other side to be ready - as long as the same ball is used there's no problem. |

I can understand it being allowed if the ref is more or less up with play and/or he deems that the receiving team is time wasting. But the ref was still way back and remembering that in level 5 there is no assistant ref's to help him I was surprised it was allowed to carry on.

Well that link seems to say that opposition players must be on or behind the 10m line at the restart ?
So the kickoff should have been retaken ? Barum Man.......did Maidenhead score ? I was at the game that 999 mentions and Raiders Alex Neilsen caught the kick and sprinted back to the kickoff point......there were only (as i recall) opposition back 3 players in their own half. he kicked off into space, chased, picked up, beat a defender and scored under the posts. the try was given. there may be other Raiders posters with a better memory than me who can confirm, but i suspect that this was not a conversion but a successful penalty ? i seem to recall that they got three points from it and we got 7 ? seemed most bizarre at the time.

It was Alex Nielsen, the opposition were Richmond and I am pretty sure you are correct it was a penalty not a conversion. 999 more than a couple of years ago, tempus fugit! |

If only Webb-Ellis hadn't given them the ball back!

No they did not score 'Darth' but it was a good long distance grubber kick and our winger just managed to stop it going out for a good touch in our 22. There was only one or two Maidenhead players in support of the kicker as the rest of their team were back in their own 22 (as well as a lot of Barum players - still picking themselves up from the taken down maul). I note that your lads are top of your division at the mo Barum Man........and Guernsey are second ? That would be a very pleasing outcome for a lot of the enthusiastic, traveling Raiders. Two favourite destinations as I recall. Best of luck with that

Darth, not sure if it was a conversion or a penalty - I remember it not being a penalty try though. |

Dave - you are correct - definitely more than a couple of years ago, time flies, after all we are over a 1/3 of the way through this season already. |
