The end of Six Nations on "Free To Air" television?

Six Nations: Private equity giants CVC complete deal for share in tournament

Quote "CVC recognises the exciting potential in the Six Nations Championships and autumn international series, and they are aligned with our vision for the future."

The deal incorporates the Women's and Under-20s tournaments, plus the autumn international series, with the six unions recently centralising their ownership and operational activities.

The Six Nations say the objective of the partnership with CVC is to "invest to grow and develop the game", with an aim to "attract a new more diverse and global fan base".

Hopefully they will allow 1 game per round to be on free to air TV. However, I may be too optimistic.

Possible loophole for a free-to-air channel to provide non-English commentary, similar to what we see for the Autumn internationals (S4C cover Wales home games).

Its a sad day for Six Nations rugby. 

An almost guarantee that the game will go behind a paywall and less people will watch it and rugby loses a privileged position of being able to gain a wide audience.

It will be like Cricket all over again - chasing a quick buck to the detriment of the game in the long term. 

We all know where the RFU's share of the cash will ultimately end up and it isn't the Community game.

It is not free money - CVC obviously believe they will earn it and more back and Ibet they priced itso that is true on the current ocntracts.

The unions are the ones betting CVC will generate enough extra income to outweigh the loss.

It will also be interesting to see how CVC manage, what at first glance, appear to be two competing interests - 1) their investment into the Premiership (and Pro14) and 2) their Six Nations investment. 

In order to get the most out of the Six Nations package they will need to have available all the players at the right time, but then the Premiership clubs would fight against any thing which means their best players are not available to turn out for the clubs and maximise the Premiership income (and CVC investment.)

CVC have a 51% controlling commercial interest in the Premiership but only 14.3% in the Six Nations. They will call the shots on player availability criteria.

I believe if it was possible for all the clubs outside the prem refusing to purchase tickets for Twickers for one season it may make the RFU think

What does the "R" in RFU stand for as the FU must stand for F...ING USELESS

Yes as far as Grassroots clubs are concerned!!

The Championship may be treated like the rest once Saracens are promoted and ring-fencing is in place;

Unfortunately, in my humble opinion, the RFU would have no trouble selling any "excess" tickets to the regular "City of London" kn0bs (Tarquin, Arabella and their pals) babbling inebriates after a half of shandy and a sniff of the barmaid's apron.

Let us hope for an opportunity to watch a few games in S Manchester sooner rather than later - its certainly better value up there!

Subject to final contractual agreements, it is envisaged that all three Championships will be shared in a balanced way which will see RTÉ again broadcast games from the Men’s Guinness Six Nations, while Virgin Media Television will diversify its coverage to include the Women’s Six Nations and Men’s Under 20’s Championships for the first time.

Commenting on the agreement, Mick McCaffrey, Head of News and Sport at Virgin Media Television said, “Virgin Media Television are very excited about this historic agreement which guarantees that the Six Nations Men’s, Women’s and Under 20s competitions will continue to be available to Irish rugby fans on Free-to-Air Television. The rapidly evolving sports landscape means it is by no means a given that world class sporting action remains on Free-to-Air television.

just to check - this only applies to TV coverage in Irish Republic?
