It would seem Cumbrian has just gone in to meltdown and it has nothing to do with the Nuclear Plant at Windscale.
RFU Comps have produced a new structure. Wow. Just Wow.

If I was involved in Cumbrian rugby, I would be persuading the 5 sides in NOWIRUL to join the Cumbrian leagues and have sides play three times so all clubs get 27 fixtures.
It might work this season, but how is promotion/relegation going to work, will there be level transfer. I do not think this is settled yet.

Important points from the RFU North statement. The interim solution to ensure RFU Leagues are delivered in the north-west for 2018/19 is to
restructure the leagues so that they are based on county boundaries (a) Cheshire/Lancashire
and (b) Cumbria at Levels 7 and below, and therefore to disapply Level Transfer Regulations
(13.2.11). In addition the RFU Adult Competitions Development Sub-Committee will instigate a
comprehensive review of adult male rugby in the North with the intention of identifying a
league structure for implementation in 2019/20. The above proposals were submitted to the RFU Governance Standing Committee for
approval under Regulation 13.1.3.
Governance approved the proposals unanimously.

Seen on twitter Clubs in Lancashire have
"The RFU Competitions Department have proposed the new NW RFU League structure. Any Lancashire Club wishing to appeal against it must do so by Noon Monday". Does this mean the ones that broke away and in the stand alone Lancashire Leagues, can appeal to transfer back in as happy to partner up with Chershire clubs and travel there!! some may be itching to go back into RFU set up, causing no end of turmoil......... Very difficult keeping everyone happy!!!! |

I do think it would be poor form indeed, if any of the breakaway clubs now tried to switch back because they feel they have got what they want, and I hope that Lancashire Rugby would fiercely resist any request from team(s) to do so. Personally, I would be surprised if any club tried to do that, particularly as this (much better) proposal is for one year only. However, given a fair wind and sensible discussion, I do expect to see the breakaway clubs make a return in 2019/20 or 20/21 as the thorny issue of long distance travel has now been placed firmly on the agenda and unlikely to go away any time soon. I hear that Cumbria have now appealed against the latest re-jigging of the Leagues, so there may yet be more frantic discussions to take place.
However, with some Lancashire clubs having already gone their own way, and a reluctance of a number of other teams in Cheshire and Lancashire to travel up the M6, it seems that Cumbrian RU is rapidly running out of options. If teams don't want to go there, or have simply refused to go, then it is hard to see what the next move is likely to be.

So how does the DOC quare the Cumbrian sides desire for matches every week for a full six months - even if they have to schlep down the M6 every other week - with the lancashire clubs desire to only play at home, not in the Cricket season and preferably no more than once a month in case their girfriends complain. I exagerate slightly for comic effect. Do they ask the Tyne and Wear clubs to schlep over the A69 - that would be unpopular on the East coast and we may well get a similar revolt there. Or do you ask the Cumbrian clubs to play amongst themselves - playing the same opposition three or four times a season - unpopular in Cumbria: especially if it is dropped on them at the last moment. Frankly I do not believe you can please all the people. One set of clubs is going to be unhappy. |

Worth a read if only to explain the current situation in easier terms than some of the ranting which is going slightly off piste.........

I read that piece and feel that it is accurate and sums up the situation perfectly.
As outlined, this has been going on for six or seven years and in the absence of meaningful discussion to try and resolve things, somebody eventually had to make a stand. It is not picking on anybody, or trying to make things awkward or difficult. But, rather, it is a practical response to a particular set of circumstances, bearing in mind just how much life, circumstances, and the Leagues have changed over the years. Something had to be done to reflect that. And, just to highlight the point; I am involved with a club that is truly amateur in every respect. Players pay their annual memberships and also pay match fees each week. There are no subsidies, incentives, expenses or rewards for training or playing. Foolish? Maybe. Old fashioned? Perhaps. But, either way, there is an honestly that runs through the club. We put our faith in a strong minis and junior section to produce our players for the future and we go with what we've got at whatever level that might be. As far as the Coaches are concerned; they know they cannot force amateur players to give up a huge chunk of their time on a Saturday (on eight or nine occasions) to travel long distances to play a game of rugby - which ultimately benefits who exactly? On the other hand, if there are clubs who choose to do it differently, then that does give them a stronger element of control over their players, and puts them in a much stronger position when it comes to selecting a team to travel long distances down the motorway in the opposite direction. So, I would ask, is it really a level playing field, and if not, is that partly the reason why some people are objecting so strongly to any sort of change from the original status quo? |

Understand where they are coming from but not sure whether it is a tad myopic or not. Again, forgive my ignorance, but does this not have the potential to weaken the Lancashire County side (eventually) if there is limited exposure to higher quality teams outside the county? Will the standard of the rugby played within the county then start to slide as no teams are being pushed beyond their comfort zone.

Short sighted or otherwise, something had to be done, and this was it.
The fact that so many teams initially chose to opt out with others now coming round to that way of thinking - despite their initial bluff and gusto about long distance travel not been an issue - does suggest that this is something that is only going to gain more momentum elsewhere across the regions. As far as the North is concerned; whether the current re-jigged League set up(s) last beyond a season I am not sure about, but what I can see is an eventual coming together of minds, but, which, sadly, will not include the Cumbrian connection. |

cpk, you & Yorkshire wish. Its from Level 7 down so hardly an issue for the Senior County XV. Good players will always move onwards and upwards but they have to start somewhere first. Clubs with excessive demands time wise at lower levels see players drift away so anything that keeps players playing can only do good, although maybe not in Cumbria.

Firstly Secondly it was an honest question - surely some players do develop / improve by the level of rugby they get exposed to so might they not miss out on improving even at Lvl 7 and below? Again this is likely my ignorance so actually trying to pick the brains of some of the more learned folk on here.

And therein lies the rub - any solution has to work for Lancashire and Cumbria - and solutions are incredibly hard to find.

It also has to suit Cheshire too.
But, with more and more teams now appearing to be unwilling to travel long distances up the M6, I can see only one solution which will be the coming together again of Lancashire and Cheshire with Cumbria annexed on the outside. Indeed, the latest review shows that to be the case (latest appeal pending of course).
With the way discussions have gone though - and seem to be going - I just cannot see any other way. |

Apparently the Cumbria clubs appeal was heard on Wednesday and the review team is meeting again at Preston G on Monday. |
