The financial consequences of relegation from the Premiership are huge. Insiders at London Irish last season and at Newcastle this season have been very clear that if they were not promoted immediately after one season in the Championship they would not be financially able to continue as a professional club. If the RFU decide, as the FA has just done with its lower leagues, to null and void this season , will Newcastle be around next season?

Have I got the wrong end of the stick here, or is that article massively misleading?? It suggests that staff are on unpaid leave, but also says they have been furloughed. If they have been furloughed, then  the government will pay 80% of their salary (up to a cap).

At the risk of taking a few bullets for this, Falcons seem pretty hypocritical. They've slated Ealing for challenging their right to promotion during the Coronavirus crisis, but then left their employees at the mercy of government benefits, while Ealing have stated that they'll pay their players and staff.

To me, the team that deserves a pat on the back is the one that is honoring their agreement with their staff and players, which is Ealing - not even cutting wages by 25% as several premiership clubs are.

We are talking level 7 and below with Football - not level 2.

That said, I could see Rugby going the same way - possibly from level 5 downwards?

Or he's a man of his word?, honouring his contracts?. 
The goverment are paying 80% of wages upto £2,500 a month. Some top clubs with wealthy owners also cutting wage bills.....

I`ll take a few bullets with you . Dean Richards is so sanctimonious and I believe he knows that they will be promoted. 

Quote Dean Richards......“Instead of spending money on legal counsel we will be directing it to those who need it most,"

I wonder if any other clubs have agreed to pay their staff and players to the end of the season. Maybe some of the posters who jumped on the band wagon will post about their own clubs decisions to lay off, fire or furlough or like Ealing Trailfinders honour their players and staff contracts .

Mike Gooley created a scholarship scheme and gave an opportunity to an entire squad of young players many who have left the premiership squads for a real education at University and a future beyond rugby. This probably the only real Academy in the country !.

There are a few clubs who have been in the Championship who only pay their players when they actually play and get nothing if on the periphery of the squad. Some clubs pay their players a pittance in relation to what the players give on the field and the sacrifices their own players make to play the game in a very short lived window of opportunity.

I think a few posters on here need to look closer to home before criticising others.
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.

This.  The article makes no sense. This is the Falcons press release:

Thursday 26 March 2020
Newcastle Rugby Ltd, which includes Newcastle Thunder, Newcastle Falcons and its associated charity, Newcastle Rugby Foundation, is working with all staff to put together a plan aimed at ensuring long-term job retention and the ongoing stability of the business.

This plan will incorporate government help via the furloughed worker scheme for some staff members, and salary reductions.

This is to ensure that we are in a strong position to move forwards when rugby resumes.

We thank our staff members for their understanding during this difficult period.

Absolute disgrace that elite professional sportsmen feel the need to seek legal redress at unprecedented times like these. What's it all about? Maintaining their jet-set lifestyle - they can't go anywhere and it's virtually impossible to spend any money other than on essentials
Everyone else is having to take a "hit" why should they be immune??? 
Grow up, get real and spare one little thought for those significantly worse off than yourselves. Spoilt little children. Any interest I had in the elite game has now totally evaporated

The thing about furlough is that you don't do any work and you don't get any top-ups. A mate of mine has been told by  his employer that if he even answers a work email on his phone over the next two months then he would be guilty of defrauding the government.

Correct!

If you were made redundant after 28 February

Your employer can agree to re-employ you and place you on furlough instead. They’ll still be able to claim a grant to cover 80% of your monthly earnings, up to a monthly cap of £2,500.

If you currently have more than one employer

You can be put on furlough by one employer and continue to work for another, if it is permitted within your employment contract.

If you’re put on furlough by more than one employer, you’ll receive separate payments from each employer. The 80% of your normal wage up to a £2,500 monthly cap applies to each job.

While you’re on furlough

Your employer will need to notify you before putting you on furlough.

Once you are on furlough you will not be able to work for your employer, but you can undertake training or volunteer subject to public health guidance, as long as you’re not:

  • making money for your employer
  • providing services to your employer

If workers are required to for example, complete training courses whilst they are furloughed, then they must be paid at least the NLW/NMW for the time spent training, even if this is more than the 80% of their wage that will be subsidised.

Any activities undertaken while on furlough must be in line with the latest Public Health guidance during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Your employer can still make you redundant while you’re on furlough or afterwards.

Your rights as an employee are not affected by being on furlough, including redundancy rights.
