How very right you are! c.f. RFL and BARLA? Suggest one body to 'run' Premiership and Championship combined controlling TV rights, finances, loan arrangements, salary caps (although I don't believe in any cap! ) and another to control the community, supposedly amateur, game?

Billy Twelvetrees wsn't a D/R player. He was a Bedford player, signed when Leicester decided they did not want him any more. After his year with Bedford, Leicester suddenly decided they did want him after all!

Ealing team for Richmond tomorrow: I'm hoping that with a few folks with knocks sitting out, and an empty week next week, that we can see a host of players back for the match against Bedford. they are putting out a strong squad, though I prefer Casson at 5 to start. I'm happy to see Charlie Walker finally get off the physio club, but I think it would be good to have Bill Johnston in the squad to get some more game time in case he is needed later in the year. Still, this is a strong squad.1 Will Davis, 2 Shaun Malton 3 Lewis Thiede, 4 Simon Linsell, 5 James Cannon, 6 Shane Buckley, 7 Simon Uzokwe, 8 Rayn Smid, 9 Craig Hampson, 10 Craig Willis, 11 JCR, 12 Matt Gordon, 13 Max Bodilly, 14 Charlie Walker, 15 David Johnston
16 Michael an Vuuren, 17 James Gibbons, 18 Kyle Whyte, 19 Harry Casson, 20 Guy Thompson, 21 Jordan Burns, 22 Luke Daniels, 23 M. Al-Jiboori.

The issue for me isn't using loanees, for me it is the nonsense that Hartpury pulled a couple of years ago where they drafted in most of the Gloucester team to beat Richmond to stay up. I think they had only a handful of their own players for that game.

Ampthill have 4 Saracens in their starting XV tomorrow + 1 Wasp. They stand out as they are wearing their 'parent club' shirt in the club visual. But it's not unusual - the Reds XXIII for the game has 3 Prem loanees in starting XV + 2 more on bench...

Yes it is getting tedious, I reckon other championship clubs will be following a similar model over the next few years

People need to wind their neck in re DR and loan players. This has been going on for years and I doubt many teams in the Championship have not had their fair share from time to time as needs must and this year is no different. If they are youngsters surely thats better for rugby in general as they are playing meaningful games. This is how Bedford have had Dan Cole, Tom Youngs, Billy Twelvetrees, 5 of the starting England World Cup final squad playing for them over the years and I would like to think have helped further their career. Whats the difference between that and some 28-32 year old journeyman who turns up, gets a 1 or if he's lucky 2 year contract and then moves on?

Ampthill 4 - 1 Jersey Even though got the win last weekend I think Ampthill are now feeling 'comfortable' in the Champ Coventry 5 - 1 Cornish Pirates Pirates with injuries I do not 'buy'. They had a decent team out last week but lost their way in the second half Ealing 5 - 0 Richmond Feeling battered and bruised (mentally too) after last week. Richmond could make life difficult for a little while Nottingham 0 - 5 Saracens Hopefully Sarries rest some of the big guns after last weekend otherwise could be very heavy defeat for Nottingham Doncaster 5 - 2 Bedford Donny tough at home

There's not a lot of "amateur" rugby being played at Level 5 these days - most are semi-pro even though they may not admit it

Unfortunately those are the regulation we play under - they are written to suit the professional clubs not the rest of us. So you eeither use themas best you can and try to be competitive in th Championship or national legues - or you accept that your club is going to be playing amateur rugby at level five or below. Both of which are valid decisions for a club committee to make.

13 starters? I thought the limit was 10 in a match day squad? - which most sane people thought was excessive.
Cannot see why the Championship should have different rules from level 3 & 4 where the limit is 5. |

Whilst within the regulations, I am truly saddened by the number of clubs extensively using DR/loan players in the Championship. I understand this is a cheap method of gaining good calibre players, and Covid has exasperated this. But we are heading slowly to a situation where in many cases it will be the Barbarians versus the Barbarians on a Saturday in the Championship rather than two sets of players with some kind of allegiance to the club for whom they are playing. To be able to have 13 players from a different club in your starting XV makes a mockery of any idea of club identity or culture. With rumours of no A league competition next season this situation will get only get worse-does the Championship want to become simply part of a pathway for players to get a Premiership contract. This situation strengthens my belief that the Premiership and Championship should be 10 full time clubs and be totally separated from the Community game where hopefully the notion of ‘a rugby club’ can remain and thrive. |

Everyone on rolling maul has detailed knowledge of the accounts of every other club and knows for certain that they are spending far too much on players - while there club never pays anything and the Fijian centre just happens to have an elderly aunt in the village that he has to nurse, so he may as well play a bit of rugby on a Saturday to stay sane.

Ah, don't you just love the internet? Random bloke sitting behind his keyboard 100 miles away knows more about your club than you do.
