Lions show their class to overcome Barnes mid-game comeback.
It was a cold windy day at Westleigh Park, Blaby for the visit of Barnes to Leicester Lions. Lions played with the wind and the slope in the first half.
Lions had an electric start to the game showing their class with some exciting flowing rugby. In the first play of the game, Lions put Barnes under pressure. They shipped the ball to Alex WilHuckleberryson who floated through the centre and deftly slipped the ball to Joe Brock who went over for a try, with Ben Young adding the conversion.
This was quickly followed by Lions working the ball out to the wing for Devon Constant to speed over for a try.
Lions were soon back in action with a forward drive with their No 8 Nick Cairns powering over for a try, with Ben Young adding the extras, taking Lions into an impressive 19-0 lead, at the end of the first quarter.
Barnes started to impose themselves on the game working the ball up the pitch, putting Lions under pressure and their centre Peter Weightman going over for a try, with Rob Kirby adding the conversion.
Both sides had opportunities in the remainder of the first half, but no points were added to the scoreboard.
Halftime: Leicester Lions 19 Barnes 7
At the start of the second half Barnes showed their determination, with a kick through which was smartly followed up by Matt Branfield who outpaced the Lions defence to score Barnes' second try of the afternoon.
As the game entered the final quarter Lions powerful pack were showing their strength and drove forward for No 8 Nick Cairns to go over for his second try of the afternoon, with Ben Young adding the conversion, taking Lions to a 26-12 lead.
In the last ten minutes Ben Young slotted over a penalty for Lions to extend their lead.
In the almost last play of the game Barnes conceded a penalty and smart play by Lions fullback Alex WilHuckleberryson caught Barnes on the hop with him taking a quick tap penalty, leaving the Barnes defence trailing behind to score the final try of the game under the posts, with Ben Young adding the extras, giving Lions a deserved victory.

An impressive win by Lions, with five tries giving them the extra bonus point win.
A spirited performance by Barnes who came back well in the mid-section of the game.
Following the game Lions were in sixth position in National League 2 South and Barnes were in tenth position in the league.
Head Coach, Gareth Collins, commented: ”We knew it would be a tough game and that’s exactly what it was. Barnes are a side that work incredibly hard and just don’t ever give up. We attacked so well for the first quarter but I think we let our tempo and intensity drop, perhaps due to a bit of complacency, and let them back in to the contest. We backed our set piece against them though and that was probably the thing that made the difference in the end. It’s great to get 5 points on the board as we try and close the gap on the front runners.”
Lions’ Chairman, Ken Whitehead, said: “A splendid performance by the lads under the guidance from our Head Coach, Gareth. The team started the game in a dynamic manner, but Barnes came back and tested us. This finishing quarter gave us the opportunity to show our class and complete a deserved win”.
Next week, on Saturday 12th January 2022, Lions are at Bury St Edmunds, The Harberden, Bury St Edmunds, kick off 3.00 pm. Bury St Edmunds are in seventh position in National League 2 South, so a competitive game is promised.
