We no longer have a pre season with Grasshoppers at Newport on Saturday. Our DoR is desperately trying to arrange an alternative fixture!

The Lions defeat Nuneaton 45-0 in trial game

Due to the ground conditions the game was played on the training pitch and therefore reduced to 3x20 mins due to the lack of floodlights. Both sides used the game to look at their full squads - the Lions using 32 players on the night from both the senior and the development squads. Despite the reduced game time the Lions still managed to rack up 9 unanswered tries in what was a good run out for the team.

The Lions didn't waste in any time getting in to the game as number 8 Nick Cairns crossed in the corner in the first minute, finishing off a well executed first phase move. Soon afterwards James Stubbs got on the scoreboard, having run an excellent support line off Devon Constant who had made a 60m break from his own 22m line. The Lions were firmly dominating the opening exchanges and Stubbs got his second of the night with a trademark snipe from a 5m scrum to round off the first third.

An almost completely different 15 played the second third, with only the half-backs remaining. It started in almost exactly the same way as the opening quarter with new man Chester Owen crossing with his first touch having found space on the edge. The on-loan Leicester Tigers man showed why he has been taken on by the Premiership champions with a number of barnstorming runs and big hits. James Stubbs secured his hat-trick following another good support line, this time off Dan Martin who had continued a move started by Alex WilHuckleberryson deep in his own half. WilHuckleberryson then turned from provider to scorer soon after when he scythed through the middle in typical fashion. The scoring for the second third was completed by Ollie Taylor who finished off a driving maul started from a 5m lineout.

Further wholesale changes were made for the final third but it didn't hinder the Lions much although to their credit Nuneaton came back in to the contest and had a number of scoring chances. The Lions did add a further two scores though, firstly through Dan Martin who picked a great line off Luke Bouchier to cross under the posts from a first phase move. The final score of the evening came from new development winger Josh Ashe, who along with fellow newcomers Morgan Tunneycliff and Ben Dickinson impressed throughout. The move started with a turnover in his own 22 by Chester Owen who then made a line break later in the move before releasing the speedy winger to cross in the corner.

The Lions showed both the solid set piece and excellent attacking rugby that we were used to seeing at Westleigh Park last season. The new additions to the squad have clearly provided further strength in depth that will add even more competition for places.

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ''It's always tough to meet the standards we strive for in these types of matches, with so many changes, however I felt we achieved a lot from the game. The main objective is just for the boys to get a hit out and get some match running in to their legs but we actually managed to put together some decent patterns in attack and to not concede is always nice. I was really pleased with the variety of tries we scored as well as the ability to score in different ways is really important. The other real positive was the introduction of the new players, who all looked comfortable in our systems. I was especially impressed with new development players who all stepped up tonight.''

Lions team first 20mins (1-15): Williams, Rudkin, Thompson, Tapscott (c), Wilson, Godefroy, Tunneycliff, Cairns, Stubbs, Bouchier, Constant, Hamilton, Bean, Ashe, Helliwell.

Lions team second 20mins (1-15): Shewring, Taylor (c), Murray, Ward, Cornwall, Johnson, Murdoch, Owen, Stubbs, Bouchier, Dickinson, Martin, Watkins, Ajeigbe, WilHuckleberryson.

Lions team third 20mins (1-15): Shewring, Rudkin, Murray, Godefroy (c), Cornwall, Johnson, Tunneycliff, Owen, Stubbs, Bouchier, Ashe, Dickinson, Martin, Preston, Neale.

Leicester Lions play Sheffield Tigers in their practice schedule before the start of the league season.

Fixture: Leicester Lions v Sheffield Tigers
Date: Saturday 27th August 2022
Venue: Westleigh Park, Blaby
Kick Off: 2.00 pm
Entry: Free of Charge

Tigers are old rivals of Lions from when they both played in National League 2 North. Many of you might remember trips to Tigers home ground, at Dore Moor, on the edge of the Peak District. One of the coldest rugby grounds I have visited.

The fixture is subject to confirmation of the fitness of Lions ground - to be confirmed or otherwise later in the week.

Lions league season starts on Saturday 3rd September 2022, Leicester Lions v Hornets (from Weston-Super-Mare), at Westleigh Park, Blaby, Kick Off 2.00 pm, normal admission prices apply.

No game for Barnstaple, but a game of interest was Plymouth Albion v Exeter University which Exeter won 28-40.

I wouldn't be surprised if the University side were knocking at the door of promotion at the end of the campaign.

I think it depends on which side they put out Sidelined. According to their web site the BUCS side is the first team and the Saturday side is classed as the 2nd team although in past years a few players tend to play in both sides. The BUCS league does not start until 28th Sept so they often put out a very strong Saturday side until then ( Barum could be in for a long afternoon on Saturday!).

The Lions travelled to National 2 North side Sheffield Tigers for their second and last pre-season fixture, having had last weeks’ game against Otley being cancelled due to ground conditions. The two sides agreed to play thirds to meet the coaches desire to rotate players.

The first third couldn’t have started much worse for the Lions, who having kicked off conceded a line break straight through the middle of the first breakdown. The cover defence scrambled to make a tackle but conceded a penalty in doing so and the home side rumbled over from the resulting lineout (7-0). Despite the poor start the response was positive and immediate. This time the kick off was caught by Devon Constant who proceeded to carry in to the Tigers’ 22 before the ball was spun out to Ben Young who grubbered through for Alex WilHuckleberryson to retrieve and score (7-5). The Lions defence was looking very solid and one defensive set ended in a turnover that Will Helliwell dribbled from his own 22m line all the way up the pitch only to agonisingly kick the ball just over the dead ball line before getting it down. Unfortunately a handling error from the Lions were attacking the Tigers’ line at the end of the third resulted in a hack down field that the Tigers’ winger won to go in with a 12-7 lead.

The Lions unloaded all five substitutes for the second third and the introduction of new signing Luke Bouchier gave the Lions attack a boost and they were soon attacking with real pace and width. The only score of the third came from James Stubbs who was in support of Will Helliwell who had made a line break down the flank before finding the scrum half in support who scored in the corner to cut the deficit (12-10).

The Lions found their stride in the last third and scored three excellent tries. The first came from a line break deep in his own half by Alex WilHuckleberryson who fed Devon Constant to run in under the posts. (12-17). The second came from another linebreak, this time by flying new recruit Seyi Ajeigbe who out paced the defence before being halted by the cover defence. Having squandered a couple of similar chances beforehand this time the Lions recycled the ball and went from touchline to touchline via an exceptional long pass from Bouchier for Ollie Taylor to get over in the corner (12-22). The Tigers hit back with a try of their own but it was the Lions who sealed the victory with a James Stubbs interception (19-31).

Head coach Gareth Collins commented: ‘‘Today was a much needed hit out for the group seeing as most had only played 20-30mins against Nuneaton. The Tigers were always going to be a tough challenge as like ourselves they are an established National league side. They had a big pack and threw a lot at us. I was really pleased with the way the boys stood up to that and I though our attack at times was exceptional. It's always nice to win but today was about our processes. We have much to work on still to get to where we want to be but things are certainly moving in the right direction.’’

Lions (1-15): Roberts, Clark, Thompson, Ward, Cornwall, Johnson, Rudkin, Tunneycliff, Stubbs, Young, Constant, Hamilton, Bean, Helliwell, WilHuckleberryson (c) Reps: Taylor, Shewring, Bouchier, Ajeigbe, Sterland.
