DCMS report does not make pretty reading.

"Premiership Rugby club finances are "clearly unsustainable", a damning parliamentary report has concluded.

The Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) select committee report said the recent demise of Wasps and Worcester Warriors puts a "stain on the reputation" of the sport's authorities."

No one at the top of the game comes out with any credit and conclusion is that Premiership rugby is unsustainable, PRL & RFU reliance on increased income is naive (my word).

Very critical of management oversight of Premiership and RFU

"The financial situation of Premiership clubs is clearly unsustainable, and we are surprised by the very complacent belief of Bill Sweeney and Simon Massie-Taylor that further growth in club revenues will solve these problems," the report said.

Yep.

Anyone with both open eyes and an open mind knew all this already.

The question is will this report make any difference?

Absolutely. A totally pointless exercise resulting in a discredited body belatedly criticising a discredited professional sport.

Probably won't be published yet as RFU and PRL have been offered a right of reply

Below is one of the opening statements of the Report.

___________

Governance
1. The financial situation of Premiership clubs is clearly unsustainable, and we are surprised by the very complacent belief of Bill Sweeney and Simon Massie-Taylor that further growth in club revenues will solve these problems. (Paragraph 7)
__________

This statement alone is absolutely damning. I have rarely seen such a description in these reports.

On reading the report page after page provides an evidence of failure across the RDU and confirms to me that clubs have a duty to act in the interest of the game as a whole. I await the report and accounts of the RFU and the General Meeting with great interest.

If we see any kind of whitewashing of what is deep rot in the governance of the game and what the Parliamentary committee described ‘very complacent attitude’ of the very people responsible, those who love the game in clubs across the country must act to hold them to account.

It is time.

The current batch of RFU Blazers, that Carling so aptly described, really do have to take a deep breath, look in the mirror and decide if they are going to continue to be the enablers for this shambles.

The health of the game, in the biggest union in the world, is at an all time low. In all areas of the game clubs are suffering while back room deals are being struck that ultimately cost them real money. CVC have injected cash, but now the bosses at HQ have lost the ability to control how income is developed and dispersed at the highest levels of the game. They have also totally lost the plot as well as the confidence of many rugby club. If the RFU had listed shares then their value would mean the tiddlywinks association could mount a hostile takeover!

The Gruesome Twosome called out in Parliamentary Report have lost any credibility to lead and should step down immediately. Again, in a listed company their positions would be completely untenable… Parliament no less has basically called them clowns … pot and kettle spring to mind but Hey Ho!

The Annual Accounts will be interesting and I suspect we’ll see a lot of blame assigned to Covid. However, real problem is long standing and quite different. There has been little vision and a complete failure to manage the resilience of the game or even create a credible long term for English Rugby. Like a Huckleberryly Pear they are staggering and stumbling from lamppost to lamppost desperately needing the support while declaring they are fine … even to drive.

Investors, such as CVC, do bring some money into the game, but their business model means they MUST take out far more.

Ealing TrailFinders and Donny both showed the kind right of management discipline by developing sensible plans and refusing to throw millions at 10,000 seater stadiums until it was justified. This prudence and responsible management was rewarded with a kick in the teeth. This happened while HQ & PLR was getting into bed with a corporate equivalent of a pay day lender.

IMO It is highly unlikely that community clubs will get much, if anything, from this new dynamic ‘relationship’. More likely there’ll be less, much less as money is channeled into corporate coffers or golden share holder in the Premiership.

The DCMS Committee hearing was reprised on BBC parliament and should be available on demand for anyone who hasn't seen it. I would have replaced the word complacent with brazen in this statement.
Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.
