The match that no team really wants, but it must still be fulfilled. Which team will rally best from their semi-final defeat?

Can France play Ireland instead please? IMO it would be a better game and pack a decent crowd in.

My heart says the Pumas still have a game in them, and for the sake of the worldwide game, I would love them to win. My head says, England beat them with 14 men, and would do so again. The problem is that coming third - especially after coming so close yesterday - would be seen as a vindication of Borthwick and the status quo in Englsh rugby.

My heart says Argentina.
My head says it's England playing so don't bother watching it. So I won't.

England will want to show they deserved more. The argies I don't think have the same drive or skill for it (and England will just drop kick everything again)

I think French and Irish supporters would recognise this suggested match as an occasion even more contrived than the actual game that's scheduled between the 2 teams who have 'qualified' to play in it. The idea Irish supporters would take time off and shell out hundreds of euros to fly over is laughable... It's hard for anyone to get too excited about this game, which clearly only exists as a money-spinner for tkt sales + tv rights (as a result of which it's unlikely ever to be scrapped). Right now I'm feeling ambivalent about watching it, and I imagine the players would be about playing in it. I'd recommend they spend all day today on the lash, recover tomorrow and then convene Tuesday to see who's up for it. Maybe by midweek I'll have come round to cheering my team in their final outing - let's see... Spoke to a couple of mates on Fri who were in SA for RWC in 1995; they went to Sun City between the semis and final and bumped into both the English & French squads who had been defeated in the semis and were on the p1ss together during early part of the week ahead of the play-off on the Thursday. Maybe there'll be something similar happening in Paris this week - do they have bars at EuroDisney?!

Smith; Steward, Marchant, Tuilagi, Arundell; Farrell (capt), Youngs; Genge, Dan, Stuart, Itoje, Chessum, Curry, Underhill, Earl. Replacements: George, Rodd, Cole, Ribbans, Ludlam, Care, Ford, Lawrence. Interesting selections from England and hope this signals the end of the free ride for Sinckler. I would have given Lawrence a go above Tuilaga as I fear both he and Vunipola are now past their best. Slighty worried about Arundell as I have a tenner on Will Jordan to be top try scorer and they only one who can touch him is Arundell |

Agree about Lawrence , good years still ahead of him with Tuilagi (and Vunipolla) on the wane as you say. Borthwick does tend to stick to his favourites but I suspect/ hope that the starting lineup will look very different come the Six Nations.

For international rugby one we need world class players, not "talented". There are not many about.

There are a lot of talented young players around, they were never given a chance under Jones, now will the RFU allow Borthwick to use them, my gut feeling is no, they will just want to win the next game to keep bums on seats in the cabbage patch with no thought for the future. Farrell will be in the next world cup squad, his name will already be on the team sheet.
