I'd be interested in how various fans feel about their teams' seasons. Totally subjective obviously, but here are my thoughts on Ealing:
I'd personally give Ealing an 'A' grade on the year in terms of their on-field and coaching performance. This was really a transitional year for the squad, with many more young/academy players being introduced to the squad while some of the stalwarts of the past half decade either left (James Cordy-Redden, Steven Shingler, Jordan Burns, Pat Howard), or were phased out throughout the year (Simon Uzokwe, Max Bodilly, Rayn Smid, Lloyd Williams). Nevertheless, Ealing were dominant throughout the season, going 19-3, scoring over 1100 points, and having over a 600 point margin of victory. On top of that, they made the Prem Cup semis, while doing the double over Saracens and beating Northampton away. The club managed to really develop and get excellent experience for a number of younger players such as Michael Stronge, David Douglas Bridge, Lefty Zigariadis, Josh Taylor, and Elliot Chilvers while having arguably the best season in club history. I think a lot of fans saw the departure of a few big names such as Richard Hardwick and Billy Twelvetrees without any big name back fill as a real risk for the year, but that doesn't seem to have been the case at all. The coaching staff deserves a real thumbs up from me this year as well, as I didn't see nearly as many headscratching sides put out as in previous years, which meant that there were no slip ups against bottom of the table sides this year. Am I disappointed that there was no promotion playoff? Absolutely. Do I think Ealing would have won - quite possibly, but overall this year left me quite optimistic for the future, and very happy with the direction that the club seems to be going on the field.

Ealing won the league because they have by far the strongest squad. We have Ealing guys on loan and there is some real quality.
From a Pirates perspective I feel like an A is a fair call. We were in a terrible place in October/Novemebr. Lost very narrowly to Ealing and Bedford at home. Not even sure if we'd be in existence after Xmas. We were near the bottom of the league and had a severe injury crisis. New owners came in and steadied the ship and our brilliant coaches recruited a few guys on loan and formed them into a very competitive team. 4th place finish was very creditable. |

Personally, I’d give Ealing an A-. They are expected to win the league, that is the bare minimum they should be achieving with their resources relative to the rest of the league. I would argue they shouldn’t really be losing as many as 3 games, they certainly shouldn’t be losing at home to Bedford…
For Bedford, it has to be an A. The best finish we’ve had in over 10 years, finishing ahead of 3 full time teams. Beat every team at least once. The only really disappointing result was the loss away at Chinnor in the quagmire as well as the manner of the spanking we took from Cov in the 2nd game of the season. That seems a long time ago now!

Nottingham fan here.
I dont think this season was anything out of the ordinary to be honest. We start out so brightly, and to be honest we held on to that for far longer than usual- had some corking results before it all started to go wrong. Our crippling injury crisis definitely did not help matters- some of the teams we fielded I felt desperately for as they were well out of their depth. I can count on the fingers of one hand how many bench players for the Cornish Pirates game on Saturday were actually in their correct positions, and we only had one available scrum half- thank heavens he didn’t get injured-! There seemed an awfully long stretch where a win seemed impossible but then we beat Cambridge convincingly, we beat Hartpury brilliantly and were frankly robbed against Pirates on Saturday. But 7th is a decent finishing spot and I’m proud of all of the lads for how hard they worked this season. Special mentions to James Cherry, our Number Eight who has more or less single-handedly held the back row together this season, David Williams our winger who has captained the side for most of this season and scored some corking tries to boot, Ryan Olowofela whose dancing feet on the wing will be sorely missed and our scrum half Josh Goodwin who has played pretty much every game this season, including some incredibly impressive performances against the likes of Northampton. As for the grade? I would say a solid grade C.

Cambridge E for achievement, A for effort. We hope that a new coach and a significant turnover in players will mean we do better next year. Of course, the other 13 teams will also improve - can we improve enough. |

Maire99.
Sorry, but have to take issue with "frankly robbed against Pirates". Your goal kicker (s) had a nightmare. If you watch the game on YouTube you'll see Nottingham's first try, although brilliant, came from a clear forward pass. Fine margins, I know, but that's rugby. |

The reason I said that is because if it hadn’t been for the idiot behaviour of some of the Pirates fans then we might have had a hope of scoring the final kick..! Poor Jai Johal never stood a chance against an air horn and various chants while he was trying to take his kick.

I’m going to be brave…
Overachievers Blues, Pirates, Chinnor As expected Ealing, Knights, Hartpury, Nottingham, Ampthill, Scottish, Caldy, Cambridge Underachievers Coventry I expected Coventry and Knights to be challengers to Ealing with Blues, Coventry faded away for Worcester reasons and Knights took longer to find their feet. For Blues I have us as overachievers but I also expect us to be battling at the top. Our squad may be small but packed with quality and no weak links before some promising youngsters from Saints. The Saints squad for the European cup final contained 9 (I think from memory) who have developed at Goldington Road. I know we always forget the close wins but having the young saints half backs in the mud of Chinnor, the red at Knights and some silly errors at Hartpury and we weren’t far from the top! Next season we have lost some quality players but also I know a few arrivals who are at least as good if not better than some of the leavers. The pack which has been a weaker link is now a formidable weapon to complement the backs. Standout players is hard but Tuilagi, Maisey, James (15). Noteable mentions Herman and Ward who both jumped up from lower leagues or Uni. Then Heffernan out tightened who played 80 mins at times and still dominated his opposite number! To strengthen we need a back up 3 and 10 who can cover 15 and a fast 9 again for the stick taps and open play carnage we thrive off. Maisey pretty much played all season.

Not condoning the idiot behaviour - that is unacceptable. These are people (a very small number) who are not regular supporters and clearly don't understand what rugby and our club is about. However, you have to look at the game as a whole and Nottingham let it slip despite being awarded a try from a clear forward pass. I remember a similar thing at Worcester, of all places, many years ago when Rob Cook was jeered and heckled but nailed the final kick of the game to win it. Have to be mentally as well as physically tough. Edited by Stalwart* - 22 hours 11 minutes ago at 09:41 |

I remember Jake Sharp being jeered by supporters of his ex-club just as he was about to take a relatively easy, potentially match winning kick, and missing. That was also put down to a lack of mental toughness etc - easy to say from the stands... There's no excuse for it in the sport but, unfortunately, gamesmanship/bad sportsmanship is becoming increasingly prevalent from both players and supporters, as was shown in the Sharks v Munster game...

Back to the main topic - Cov would probably be a D - requires improvement. Some encouraging early signs but ultimately - for several reasons - we failed to attain our target grades...

I would put Hartpury in the overachiever bracket. Have been in the same tier as the professional clubs all season. I would also put Cambridge in underachieving. Whilst they would be expected to be towards the bottom, the manner in which they have been beaten this season still means they have underperformed. I actually thought they had recruited well and would do better than they did. Agree that Bedford’s stand out players have been Maisey, Tuilagi, James, Heffernan (in that order). Maisey in particular basically played every minute of every game and the one week we decided to rest him we lost to Chinnor. Tuilagi could step up to a higher level now and the way Louis James has been playing the last couple of months means I think we’ll only get one more season out of him.

Scottish Finished 9th in the end, but going into the final game we had an opportunity to finish 7th, unheard of in recent times. 9 wins and 30 points clear of Cambridge is quite a result for club thats been dangling around the bottom for a while. Stand out wins against Pirates (H) and nilling Doncaster away in October, and away win to Nottingham in April. - Most league points in a decade. - Joint highest finish since 2017 - Highest ever finish in the Championship. We have had a habit in recent seasons of throwing games at the last minute or with the dying actions, which resurfaced this year with a number of annoying losses - 34-33 to Hartpury, 14-15 to Ampthill, 20-22 to Bedford. Club could have been pushing for top 6 without them. Players Another good season for Noah Ferdinand, nominated for player of the season. Two players who've stood out once making the starting shirt their own are Austin Wallis (11 odd tries from hooker), and Jonny Law at scrumhalf. Matt Wilkinson at lock putting in a shift in every week. Didnt really see the best of Jonah Holmes due to injury and had some other good operators (Will Brown, Will Talbot-Davies) in and out with injury. DR Players The dreaded DR debate which I know is popular on here. I've long been vocal that I really dislike this link up with Quins and that it doesnt help us in the long or short term. We put out some teams mid season with 10+ starting Quins which was just absurd, and glad we have really reduced that as we have gone along. Very happy with the new limits for next season, as when we have consistently selected the same squad of LS contracted players we've actually looked very good. Chopping and changing every game ruins our momentum and form. Notable successes of the loan scheme - Roma Zheng on the wing, Zach Carr at lock/8 and Josh Bellamy at 10/15. Downsides - having players like Archie White and George Hammond parachuted in for one game only to clearly only get gametime after injury. Having several players come in at various points who clearly couldnt care less/took game time off LS players - e.g. Lewis Gjaltema coming in to take game time off Jonny Law as above - couldnt buy a start before xmas. Cleaves (more last season) in particular never looked like he gave a rats a*se about playing for us and barely bothered chasing back/tackling. |

Bear in mind though both our kickers were very young. Threlfall is just 18 and Johal not much older and in his first season out of uni rugby. They don’t necessarily have the experience of it to be able to do that.

I would give Chinnor an A. Newly promoted sides normally struggle in the Championship, but they were competitive in all games until being well beaten away at Doncaster, Ealing and Bedford in the final three away games. It was reportedly the best first season in the Championship in the last 10 years, apart from Coventry. After huge gaps without matches during the season due to being excluded from the Premiership Cup, the run of 10 games in 11 weeks to finish may have taken its toll. Wins were recorded over Doncaster, Bedford and Nottingham, as well as doubles over Caldy and Cambridge. A draw was achieved at Hartpury in April, who at the time had a 100% home record. Narrow losses against Pirates ( twice ), Ampthill, Nottingham and London Scottish might have gone the other way with a bit more experience, know-how or luck ! Scrum-half Luke Carter was excellent all season and finished joint-third in the division's try scoring list. Full-back Will Feeney was also very good until a season ending injury in January against Ealing, who ironically have signed him for next season. The pack held its own in most games, and whilst the line-outs were sometimes suspect, they were very good in the loose, especially in the muddy conditions in December. Hopefully there will be more games in November, December and January next season for Chinnor and less in May ! The attendances all season were amazing, and Chinnor had the third best average in the league at 1,793, up from 479 two seasons ago.

Nick Easter has made a huge difference since he arrived. Chinnor were a side that had forgotten how to win and in danger of relegation - and he turned it round. If I were Chinnor, I would be worrying about Quins offering Nick a job. Obviously, the club is not just one man, and the rest of the backroom staff have done magnificently to build the attendance and the other parts of the club. Now, if only you could change the microclimate that makes the Thame ground the coldest in the country.

I can’t believe leafy Chinnor is colder than Caldy, based on my last two visits ….
I agree though Chinnor have contributed significantly to this season’s Championship, and have been well rewarded by the level of home support. There might even be something in this promotion idea….

Just a quick correction there Dawson - London Scottish have finished 3rd, 5th, 7th and 8th previously, so not our highest ever finish
![]() I agree with your other points and its nice to achieve 50+ points considering the regular changes to the team. London Scottish were a lot of posters choices for bottom two (hard to argue against) but its a relief to be comfortably beyond that and 'progressing nicely' shall we say.

No excuses should have kicked at least a couple of conversions and the young Fly half will learn from that which is the reason he is at Nottingham .
