Can't quite see the point of the article - it's almost like the author has read a couple of paragraphs in favour of ring fencing, a couple against and come up with this.
Little original journalism as many parts look directly lifted from other articles. I suspect that I could do a similar article on (say) non-league football by reading a couple of stories. I realise there's not much sport to write about but if you're going to pontificate you need to show you've done some research. |

The author is in 'leveraged finance'. It's really rugby as a business, not a sport, he's talking about - see his Linkedin entry.

It is always interesting that those who come at the game from a financial viewpoint never suggest removing or replacing those Premiership clubs which are financially loss making year after year and replacing them with other clubs who can show profits. I wonder why that is? I thought that the original article was poor. For example there was no examination of the lack of pyramid structure in American sports, by which I mean the structures (soccer, probably being the exception) are geared only towards the clubs and not the country. Where as Rugby Union (and Cricket, less so Rugby League and Soccer) are geared towards the International side which is where the income stream really operates. American Major leagues also have a central form of control and an approach to aiding the weakest team by giving them first choice of signing the new talent. Can you imagine that sitting well with the current Premiership clubs? |

It does seem to propose paying fewer players more - and assume that that generates hype. It does not posit a way to produce those players in future.

It would be interesting to know which clubs ourptside of the Premiership club could actually make a profit if they were in the Premiership and had to spend considerably more to be competitive. Edited by Raider999 - 18 May 2020 at 18:37 |

You can only make money at sports if there is a strict salary cap set below the income level - which the model used by US sports. This means people buy sports franchise to make money.
However, you need to have the government on your pocket so you do not get sued for restraint of trade.

As an aside, and as a big fan of RL, this is where the RFL really have messed up over the years. They've ended up with a club-first structure where the clubs aren't making any money but there's no will to do the internationals which would. And it's gone on for so long that the Australians, who were the main financial draw, invented State of Origin to take up the slack and now don't need internationals.... whereas the RFL probably do, but can't because they've got no one of a credible standard interested in playing them. Almost makes the RFU look switched on. Almost.

Conor Dolan is an ex-pro with Wasps and London Irish, aged 23/24. He's on Twitter @conordolan01 and flagged up this article there. He was a short-term loan signing for Jersey Reds in Nov 2016 and featured in away games at Rotherham & London Irish that month - the most recent appearances listed on Statbunker. Believe he then played in the US for a while...
