Last nights match between Leicester Tigers and Sale was a great advert for the pro game with something to play for. Now fast forward (or is it press re-wind) to a day when there is something to play for at the other end of the league, with relegation fears and of course promotion for the side that finishes top of the Prem 2/Championship. I remember vividly George Ford saving the Tigers bacon at a game at Newcastle Falcons, where had Tigers lost, they would have been relegated.

There has to be promotion and relegation in the leagues, otherwise what's the point in competing?

Ask the yank sports franchises. The idea of relegation and lose access to the giant pool of money is something that scares businessmen who invest in sports for money.

Investing in sport for money limits you to a few major sports.
Rugby is not one of them.
However Rugby can be used as a tax write off.
