I understand this view, and as an Ealing fan, I'm probably more jaded than most about the Minimum Standards Criteria. However, I think that the biggest benefit of this set up will be having regular rugby to go watch. With 26 league matches, and no cup, that means that every team gets a nice, predictable schedule where we can play every team once each home and away. While I'll miss the challenge of playing the prem teams, and a couple of bumper crowds, overall the league should be stronger with no teams going 6 weeks without a match, and not needing to wait for Premiership breaks. Instead, it can just be rugby every weekend on a nice, consistent schedule. I've seen times this year where Ealing has played one home game in a month - absurd. We've also played London Scottish four times - also absurd.

One game a month, such luxury. Home games involving Premierships clubs, unthinkable. But 26 games in 8 months does sound sensible. Six sides will have no games in May. We will be trying to avoid the relegation play-offs - but so are 13 other sides. So II think we will be happy to have a blan May. |

As Camquin alludes to, Chinnor and Cambridge have gone a lot longer than one home game in a month, and have had no fixtures against Premiership clubs, so we have little sympathy for the comments on behalf of Ealing. And as to Ealing having to play London Scottish four times, Chinnor and Cambridge had to play the Not The Prem Cup in order to have some rugby, so will have played each other 4 times......................

With the Premiership playing dirty, perhaps this is the prefect format, as we can all play hard in the league and then those clubs in the top 6 that can't go up, could perhaps rest a few players to let those clubs that can have a crack at Newcastle.
We do need a 31 January transfer deadline again like last time (barring exceptional circucmstance loan) we had playoff to stop any mass signings just before both playoffs. Still remember Birmingham Solihull or Pertemp Bees they may have been recruiting a lot of players ready for the relegation play offs!

You may want to re-read my post. The entire point was that I thought it was better and fairer for the league overall to have the recently announced structure than to retain the blatantly unfair schedule that we had this year.

Yes, we remember Pertemps Bees. They were, supposedly, struggling financially and we had a whip round at Pirates to help with their travel costs when they came to Penzance. Next thing, they're recruiting a shed load of players! Not bitter, mind! |

This. Worcester will be writing expensive contracts for 2025/26 based on a projection of promotion in Year 1 : everyone knows that Champ rugby doesn’t bring in enough revenue to pay those player salaries. The RFU can’t risk the egg-on-face if The Franchise finishes 2nd or 3rd in the current format and has to announce financial problems. Let’s face it : Playoffs for the top 6 vastly reduces the jeopardy caused by dropping points away at Ealing, Donny, Cov, GR, the Mennaye, a heavy pitch at Caldy, or anywhere else.

We came second to them in the season they decided to reduce the numbers at level two to 12, so there was only one side promoted.

I wonder what the odds are on the completely random fixture generator giving Worcester a home game at Sixways to start the season…

Birmingham & Solihull are currently in Counties 2 Midlands West (East). I think this is level 8 of the pyramid but correct me if I'm wrong.

I think I missed it originally, but I was reading through the rules today, and each match day squad has to have at least 18 EQP. Not sure if that will impact many teams - Ealing went a bit heavy on the South Africans and Irish a couple years ago, but I think that has tailed off with more academy players being brought through.

Sorry - these aren't the official competition rules, but they are on Rugbypass, which is owned by World Rugby if I recall correctly. |

I was thinking earlier when the Championship clubs faces the ND1 runner up... what tackle laws do they play? Not what you wanted KnightsBoy but some I learnt a few things here including where all the clubs have finished this season before the season has ended! To help young players gain experience, Champ clubs will be permitted unlimited dual-registered players from Premiership sides. However, this will be capped at a maximum six in any matchday squad. The rule will be mirrored in the national leagues as well, but season-long loans will be excluded from the cap. |
