LIONS SIGN FORMER CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYER GEORGE WATKINS

The former Bristol, Cardiff Blues, Leeds Carneige and Jersey Reds man joins the Lions for 2022/23

George is a powerful centre/wing with a wealth of experience as a professional rugby player. He is also a prolific try scorer who burst on to the scene for Bristol in 2010 scoring 10 tries in 20 appearances in his first season in the Championship. He went on to play 89 games for the club, scoring 51 tries, before having spells at Moseley, Leeds and Jersey in the Championship along with one season with Cardiff Blues in the Rabodirect PRO 12.

George joins from Hong Kong where he was a player/coach at Kowloon Rugby Club and also played for South China Tigers, the professional team of Hong Kong. George joins the Lions as a backs player/assistant coach where he will assist head coach Gareth Collins and backs coach Lloyd Warner in coaching the back line.

Head Coach Gareth Collins commented: ''We are delighted to have secured the services of such a high profile player as George and it is testament to what we have built and achieved over the last three years which means we can attract such a player. When I met George I was immediately impressed by his outlook on the game and how passionately he spoke about it. He is very much aligned to our vision so I'm sure his experience will help us kick on from where we are. I've been impressed with his attitude and high skill level in training and am excited to see him thrilling the Westleigh faithful.''

George commented: ''I'm really excited to join up with such a promising squad and a club who are in a great position to challenge following a strong finish to last season. I can already see the potential of the squad in training and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can do this season.''

Congratulations. It's certainly a testament the amount of money Lions are willing to invest and well done to them. Or him. As for the Westleigh faithful..... they'll probably both be happy.

I've been to Blaby on a few occasions, and there was more people inside the pitch boundaries than outside! Not on its own l might add, other venues have the same issues attracting spectators.
What if the Hokey Kokey really IS what it's all about?

Gates have increased a bit since being in South league, especially last year when Lions had a good winning streak. With other clubs grounds very close, Leicester Vipers less than half a mile away for example, the rugby fans not at Welford Road watching the Tigers are spread a bit thin.

Assuming this was a response to my earlier post… when I referred to a higher level I was suggesting more championship or even premiership level.
