Only way a play off might work (as 4 down is too many) is a play off between the 1st place team with fewest points in the 3 leagues against the 2nd placed team with most points.

At the moment that would be Blackheath v Fylde, so would that just be a reflection of relative strengths of the leagues?

I've never thought it was fair to give a team advantage based on points scored in different leagues, as there is no consideration to the respective strengths of the leagues themselves, and always thought the old play off should be at a neutral venue.

I suppose you could have all first placed teams playing second placed ones, but always like the idea if you win the league you go up by right.

Worthing beat Bracknell (at Worthing) in the 2007/8 play-off to gain promotion to the National League (the old Nat 3(S)). In the 2012/13 play-off they defeated Stourbridge (at Stourbridge) to gain promotion to National 1.

If only Webb-Ellis hadn't given them the ball back!

Damn.....Tyke got in first.....I was at all three playoffs.

Islander/Camquin......apologies for the factual inaccuracy.....just lazy on my part.  It was a tongue in cheek observation, predicated on the fact that by and large, the southern representatives have won the playoffs.

Lastly.....and in retrospect of course, I completely agree with a neutral venue for a playoff.  Relative standings do not take into consideration the strengths of the leagues each team are competing in.

FWIW......the South have had the home tie 11 times out of 18, and lead the results in those games by 14 wins to to 4 defeats.

A bit surprised to see the Dorks lose at home to Hawks, but they are coming through a tough sequence of fixtures and have I think, now lost 4 of their last 5 games.  Always good to see the neighbours going down heavily of course, though tbf they have lost all these games narrowly.  Wink

As is often the way at this end of the season, when teams are battling for survival, relegation contenders lift their games and sometimes produce surprise results ?  Such I think, was the effort of the 100 at home to OA's today.  A big surprise to me anyway.  Two good points and very well done to them. Clap

All of the other games went much as forecast.  I will mention the NW performance as I was at the Rugby Park today.
You would not believe the chances we butchered in the first 10mins when a succession of our players succombed to white line fever.....ignored supporting players and got pulled down by NW defenders a couple of yards short of the line.  Very frustrating.
WE did get back on track and after hat, and I think it is fair to say that several of our young pack members made good inroads and we let our backs run through good handling.  There was a sad moment near HT when our outstanding winger Barnes, went down with what looked like a nasty knee injury.  Bad news for him of course and also our home crowd......but great news for NW as he had already scored four tries at this point.  Hurry back Curtis
Raiders have a lot of good players and some precocious young talent.  I say this by way of background as my MoM was .....by some margin, an NW player.

Without wishing to be melodramatic, I have been watching rugby around this sort of level for 20yrs.....and I don't recall seeing a better fly half.  He was outstanding in every aspect of his play...great athlete, excellent feet, great boot and marvellous hands.  Matt Hodgson.....NW skipper.  ClapClapClap  Amazed I've not heard of him before.

Almost single handedly kept NW in the game and drove them on to score two tries in the last 5mins for their TBP......sickened me given my prediction  AngryOuch.

If he stays fit, I would expect NW to stay up

Matt is a very talented player...i am given to believe he is moving to London next season, which will be a big loss for NW (apologies if my intell is incorrecy).....if he does go, then I am sure several clubs would be interested in his services!

I wasn’t surprised at all, the last two games we have played well, lost to Blackheath in the last 15 mins after taking the lead 26-28 after being down 21-7 at HT. Last week against you we put in a good performance but alas came up short! Dorking have been our thorn in our side for a numerous years, so it was glad to have a win on their turf for a change!

Fair enough Nick.......given the respective recent records of both clubs, it should not have been a surprise.  I'm just always surprised when Hawks win WinkBig smile

And by the way, I should have mentioned the Oaks......an excellent 5pt home win under pressure....that tripartite scrap at the bottom remains very interesting......nobody giving an inch.  If I had to guess, I think it might be Rochford for the drop.

Darth the NW 10 was absolutely superb when he played against us last week but I do think he he known in the coaching circles but probably the travelling that could be problematic if as I think he lives that way.
As for events at Well Hall yesterday we again gave the opposition a 16 point lead before coming back with 45 unanswered points won’t get away with that next week at BSE.

Hi Rabbie......i was a bit lost for superlatives as regards the performance of Hodgson against us.....in a losing cause.  I thought he looked a bit big for a fly half but such is his balance and athleticism, that he puts his size to great advantage.  He has a mighty left boot to add to all his other skills.  As he is (allegedly) moving to London next year, perhaps we might see him at Club Wink

Your chaps only need another 10pts to clinch the title now.....so near the finishing line.  BSE will be a tough test though.....they are in fine form and scoring a lot of points.  You will indeed need to start better against them.

It looks like there will almost certainly be two northern sides relegated now......so a level transfer of sorts will be required.  Maybe Taunton or Esher joining them ?  Perhaps still......Chinnor, though less likely.  I guess Esher would come East and one of the other two, West.
I don't yet know how they will manage this situation, but it seems to me that one northern side will have to go East or West ?  That is not great from a travelling perspective ?

It hasn’t done Leicester Lions many problems this season and I believe it’s their second. Not sure who else is around that area.
It’s between Taunton & Esher to come down for me as Mose have 2 games in hand and at this stage of the season a 7 point lead is huge.
Remember Shanners played 150 games for N Walsham so perhaps that could give us an inside edge but Rosslyn Park will probably offer him at least 4 times more than we could

The Lions story is an interesting one Rabbie.  I feel they are getting just reward for their courage.

They were level transferred three years ago into the stronger (matter of opinion) Nat2S, but made a decent fist of it.  There was a need for a level transfer again the next season, but instead of taking the easier option of going back North, they elected to stay South, correctly imo, believing that this would be better preparation for their longer term ambitions.

They did improve again in their second season against much stern opposition, and now sit top of Nat2W......and entry to level 3 beckons.  Well done them....I hope they enjoy it.  Level 3 is my personal favourite as a spectator.  I hope my lot make it back there while I still live !!  Wink

Hi Hawks. Its a matter of opinion according to your allegience. If I recall correctly in recent times Dorking have met Hawks 4 times, winning twice at your place, and Hawks have won twice at The Big Field. This season both wins have been by 4/5 points and very close games. We were a lot stronger at Dry Leas this season, and whilst I make no public excuses Hawks deserved their narrow win on saturday. For me I agree with Darth. We have come through a difficult and demanding 5 games against teams that seem to be improving towards the end of the season, whereas our surprises happened earlier in the season. We lost with the final kick of the game against Bury twice, and lost by narrow margins at Worthing, Guernsey, Bury, and to Hawks on saturday. We also seem to have thrown away good advantages in the process. As I said I make no public excuses but there are reasons to query the turnaround in form after what has been IMO a very impressive return to L4. Dorking have attracted a lot of decent players who have integrated smoothly with our own home grown players, and I understand the cameradery, bonding and team spirit is second to none at the club. An enormous credit must go to our DOR, his coaching staff and all the backroom team. On a personal note we are possibly Miffed at losing our lofty position but are close enough in 5th to end the season well. I am certain everyone at the club is more than happy with the team performance this season.ClapBig smile

It subsequently stayed and was only used again as a factor to determine the make-up of the new leagues due to the restructuring process. Given there are no longer any play-offs ( shame in my view ) I would only expect it to be used again if any season wasn't completed or unless the RFU had another brainf.a.r.t moment.

I may be wrong but I thought it was brought in when N2N & N2S had differing numbers, maybe when OE's were not relegated to N2S or even when Mount's Bay folded all those years ago

Gosh Pete.....you've read a long way back in this thread.....getting some practice in in case you are back with us next season ?  WinkWink

I think another poster explained that the average points measure was introduced in the covid effected season when we were not going to be able to complete the fixture list.

I did try and provoke some debate (unsuccessfully) as to which team might be deemed the overachievers this season, and which would .....by contrast.....be the biggest underachievers.

In the latter category, I think Canterbury will be most disappointed in their relative league position.

I still reckon the overachiever 'award' should go to Barnes or the Dorks.  Probably the latter as they have stepped up a level (theoretically), but this is the best Barnes team that I have seen over the years.
Often.....as I recall....a bit of a yoyo side......too good for level 5 but struggling to survive at level 4.
Great seasons for both really ClapClap

Vote for Barnes Darth pleaseSmileSmileSmile, we have been fighting for ten years for some decent traction and this year we have found it, I think it is built on better defence, more consistency from game to game, and definitely more fitness in the last quarter, which we have too often lacked in previous campaigns! We have a strong squad too, with the 2nd XV playing in the Raging Bull League 1, meaning that players can step up when needed. Howeve, if I couldn’t vote for my own team then my vote would go to Dorking , they have slipped in recent weeks, but they turned us over home and away, both times right at the death, better concentration when it mattered. We are now about to enter a tough run too to finish with, Oaks away on Saturday, who seem improved recently, then Bury away, Club at Barn Elms on April Fool’s Day, followed OA’s and Worthing away…I think these five games will define our season…we shall see!
