Another tremendously entertaining game at the Rugby Park yesterday.......Lions are a very fit, powerful and well organised side who kept going for the 80mins.  Sumpter had his usual strong performance, the blindside Johnson also did very well and the FB Wilcoc*son was a pain the proverbial all afternoon.
Overall, my lot had the cutting edge though and were quite comfortable until two individual errors gifted Lions some reward in the last few minutes.
Raiders were very good imo.....they are on fine form and FWIW, no Quins in the starting XV.  We had two lads in the U-20 side Friday night as well.

So with Hawks only managing a draw at in form BSE, the teams in 5th and 6th places are leaving themselves with a lot to do to get back into contention.

I am as surprised as anybody with the size of the Esher win over Redruth......i had Choppers down to win that one.  I have some views of my own on the DR topic which I shall share later.

Dings continue on their crazy way.....edging a win in another 14 try extravaganza against high scoring OA's.  Surely their defence coach must be in therapy by now ?  LOL

Clifton picked up their expected win away at Westcliff, but may have been a bit surprised by the tenacity of their opponents who ran in 5 tries of their own,  Great effort. Clap

The Barnow boys let me down again, but given their opponents next week, now seems a good time to stop predicting wins for them.....or even draws for that matter. Wink  Looked like the talismanic Seabright was missing yesterday ?.

That was a thumping win by the Islanders over Hinckley eh ?  Was this excellence from the home side
or were Hinks unusually poor ?  I was not expecting such a dramatic scoreline.

Lastly .....a good if expected victory for the Hundred, who have been consistently competitive at home.  Another defeat for injury troubled Barum.

A few separate thoughts from me on the subject of DR's/loanees......a subject that i have been conflicted about for some time now.

Overall, i would say that there is much to commend the system and that operated FAIRLY, all three parties would be beneficiaries, Prem club, host club and players.

i definitely do not know how the system is operated at other clubs and in truth, do not know categorically how it works at the club I support. What i can say is that from my own observation, it seems manifestly unfair in a couple of respects.

Firstly, the young DR's seem rarely available.....say just one third of the season ? Perhaps a half at best ?
But when they are available they seem to come straight into the squad and sometimes, straight into the starting side.  it seems to me that when this happens, it cannot be good for team morale can it ?

Also, we....as say Team A, can play four high quality young players against team B.  But then the next week against team C....none of them are available ?  Again manifestly unfair to team B and over the course of a season, can produce multiple unbalanced and unfair results.

What I believe should happen is that within current guidelines, young players be allocated to the hosting club for the whole season.....being released only to play representative rugby if they are good enough to be selected.  they then become a proper part of the squad ....day in day out, and can compete with all of their team mates for a place on Saturdays.....every week.
I think that that would be fair.  Anything less and I would like to see it stopped completely.

I am fully aware that a lot of people on here don’t like dual registration players. My final comments:

1. Our 2s players are already in the 1st XV due to injuries.
2. The RFU Regulations do indeed have a Transfer Deadline - Zeiss was registered before that but wasn’t fit to play immediately.
3. EAP players can join Clubs after the Transfer Deadline as per Regulation 13.4.4.d if approved by the Head of RFU Academies.

So presumably then Phil Cokanasiga qualified under number 3.

What do people think about players turning out for more than 2 clubs per season, or turning out for two clubs other than their “home” clubs?
Asking for a friend ( from Redruth ).

It appears the regulations allow a premiership academy player to be dual registered with a team in each of level 2, 3 and 4.

If this is correct, I would say this needs to be amended - I cannot be the intention was for a player to be able to play for 4 teams in a season.

Hi Darth, just like our Guernsey game (when we were 0-19 up at HT but lost) we let a strong lead 0-12 HT lead disappear against Canterbury ..very disappointing, three players with COVID, including Skipper Seabright, and several other players injured or unavailable, meant we fielded a very different side yesterday than the one that played so well against Bury last week. It is fair to say we were pretty disappointed with this result.

That was precisely the intention, though I suspect the intention was for a young player to start in Nat 2, get some experience and then move up and perhaps get a run out in a higher league, or possibly one of the noddy cups.

Remember, the rules are written for the benefit of the premiership clubs and they see our function as merely to give their players game time.

Was that fair play?

I think dr's are bound to have some effect, but Lions are actually doing better this year without them, sure our lads probably got something from playing alongside the likes of Van Poortvleit, Martin and Whitxombe, but a lack of Tigers has not harmed the Lions, Loughboro Students have a few Tigers and they aren't exactly pulling up trees in Nat2 N are they?

Hi all not been on for a long time ,but have been reading comments ,as i watch Clifton most weeks i have been reading everyone's speculations with interest ,Clifton referred to as young bristol ,last saturday only had  two bristol academy players one started ,one on the bench , which does benefit everyone Clifton did a great recruitment job last year , bringing in alot of quality to what was already a reasonable squad
Waiting for saturday with interest should be a great game Esher won deservadly before christmas ,Clifton had some injuries then with backrows playing in the 2nd row , win or lose the squad that has played all season will continue in the spirit of the competition

I don’t post often but do enjoy the forum.
There are and have been some Bristol, Gloucester, Bath and Hartpury linked academy players in the Clifton squad this season but the vast majority are local/club long term players.
I believe my club nurtures and develops/finishes players in the right spirit. We hold none back and encourage ambition.
All are welcome to help us celebrate 150 years as our sesquicentennial season approaches.

As is the Esher squad. We have had just 3 players from Irish this season and 1 from Scottish. We have 3 senior teams and players move between those teams - the 3rd team hooker was on the bench against Redruth and is likely to be there again this week. We are building a team of young players who want to play for Esher, in the face of @ lot of competition in our area - Rosslyn Park, Richmond, Barnes, Dorking, etc.

no doubt about game of the day today......a brilliant and to be fair, mostly unexpected win by Esher at Clifton Clap  convincing gap in points as well.  we can hope that Halliford was at the match and we get a first hand accounting of what occurred.  Clifton suddenly drop to 4th Ouch

Choppers gave the Islanders a proper beating and in so doing, retain their place at the top of the table.
They will not go away.

My lot managed to avoid another banana skin away at Barn Elms, where the pitch held up well in reasonable playing conditions.  While I thought we were the better side on the day, Barnes were as combative as ever.  Their forwards were tigerish and their press defence caused us problems....the two centres had good games and their 12, Weightman, had a tremendous day in contact.
In addition, we spent large parts of the game kicking the ball to Rob Kirby.......this is NOT a good idea....as we watched him return it with interest over and over.
But we worked hard and fashioned 4 tries.....could have had a couple more.....and the result should have been more comfortable as we lead 26-13 going into the last few mins.  A yellow card and a very strong finish took the Barnow boys to a place where they were one conversion away from nicking it.
Overall.....another good win....i think that that is 9 on the trot now and we stay in the mix.  Very well done lads ClapBig smile

Hawks seem to have had a tough time of it at Dry Leas against the City Side.....a surprisingly close and low scoring encounter ?   With next week in mind....let's hope this represents a drop off in form Wink

Gosh.......what happened at Woollams ? Ouch   I mean....fantastically well done Westcliff.....more improvement.....but it is still hard for me to understand how they lost this one.

A very fine and convincing win from the Wolfpack today at Hinckley.....they are mostly free scoring of late and I think, that is 8 games unbeaten for them now......watch out next week Choppers Wink

yet another home win for Lions against Rochford....who seem to have given another good account of themselves.  it's a shame for me that both of these teams do not have the opportunity to represent themselves again in this league.

Good win for Dings at Barum....who drop to bottom of the league after this defeat and the resurgence of Wescliff of late.  I'm sure they will battle on to improve.

I really enjoyed listening to radio Cornwall this afternoon

5 points, Philps pasty, St Austell "Tribute" and great commentary from the one and only Peter Richmond.

What a great St Piran's day.

I was at Clifton to see Esher continue the quality of rugby from last week. After the first 10 minutes we took control of the game. Morley at fly half was imperious, kicking well and his sniping runs creating freedom for Rawstron-Rudd who scored 2 or 3 tries. Our forwards were a match for Clifton and our backs were way better. Pozniak again looked the real deal and Lavin also added a lot from fullback.

Our game plan was built on really solid defence and quick ball in the hand going forwards. This bemused Clifton and at times they were arguing with themselves. You could see why they have been successful at the beginning of each half but as Esher gained control they lost their composure.

Two nice touches - Lucas Brooke from Irish played for us and his father Zinzan Brooke came down by train to watch, returning on the team coach - Morley was yellow-carded towards the end but Esher still drove up the hill and were awarded a penalty, the captain asked the referee if Morley could come back as he would like the points. Ref said yes, Morley returned as 10 minutes had passed and kicked the penalty.

Our season now comes down largely to the home and away fixtures with Worthing. Redruth and Clifton have easier run-ins and Esher now have to win every match but on today and last week, that is possible. Looking forward to it!

Has anyone else saw the nca instagram post that there will be no promotion from the championship as Ealing and Doncaster ground are unfit for the premiership, so two down from national one and one up from Nat 2S & Nat 2N, so no playoffs. Can’t remember how many down from championship and up from Nat 1, I think it’s only 1??

One up from National 1.
Two down from National 1, the only relegations anywhere in the first team system - there might be some in merit leagues.

Here is a question for the more knowledgeable amongst you.....those that unlike me, have a proper grasp of the laws.

Raiders 3rd try yesterday, came about after a kick and chase took the ball over the Barnes whitewash where predictably, Kirby was in place to grab it but.....with chasers bearing down, he had to sidestep and run towards his own posts and we were all (i think) expecting him to launch yet another clearance.
However, perhaps as it was on his left foot, he decided to pass to one of his mates by the posts....who did not appear to be expecting this and knocked it on. There were 4 or 5 players really close as the ball bobbled about but a Raider got there first and the try was awarded.
It struck me though, what would have happened if a Barnes player had got there marginally first ?  After the knock on, would that not be a penalty ?  And as it clearly would have denied a tryscoring opportunity, would it not be a penalty try and YC ?
It seems unlikely if only because I can not recall ever seeing it happen.  Perhaps someone can set me straight.

A knock-on is not a penalty offence.
So for it to be a penalty, either the knock-on would have to be deliberate, or the person that grounded the ball would need to come from an off-side position, that is from in front of the knock-on.

While you cannot have a scrum, ruck or maul in the in-goal, and therefore their off-side lines disappear, offside from open play still applies.

If it was a penalty, it could well be a penalty try and then a yellow card.

But, if Barnes were to simply knock-on and then an onside Barnes player touched down, we would restart with an attacking 5m scrum.
