Okay, we now have had a preseason and a couple of matches what are peoples thoughts

For me it’s been a bit of hit and Miss with some teams making good effort in sticking to the new laws but some just haven’t bothered. It’s the same with the refs they seem to forget about it then you have a few penalised then they forget again. I think the ARs need to help a lot more but then again again that’s been the call for years.

My first impression from both games is that the referees are applying it fairly well, you can't punish when you have the wrong angle to see, but have perhaps been instructed not to yellow card slightly high unless there are several repeats by the same player - which I have seen 2 or 3 warnings given for, which early in the season I see as quite acceptable. Some may not agree!

In the two games I have watched it has worked well.  Players seem to making the effort, Referees seem to watching out for it and it hasn't ruined the games as a few doomsayers have previously suggested.

On that point I have heard nothing to suggest a drop in player numbers because of the changes.

Seen 2 x L5 games live, first had 20 pens for high tackles which caused a lot of stop start and crowd murmurings, not just due to the pens given but then the inevitable slow line out after. Fair play to ref as watched game on Veo after and all were legit. Plenty of warnings given then a yellow card to each side.

Second game much less pens but feel players will takes ages to get out of old habits particularly as they tire and for the reflex/instinct occasions.

Incidentally not one player off for concussion assessments in those matches despite hard grounds and apparently only one red card for head contact high contact across the CB in games/pre season to date.

Watched the 2nd half of Wharfedale v Rotherham on Saturday, plus Wharfedale 2nds playing Scun thorpe 2s on the back pitch.

Didn't look much different to last year, odd penalty here and there but nothing like the car crash some were predicting.

2nd team game saw the first 'late and low' call against the ball carrier which the ref had to explain to the penalised player but there were no arguments.

I think in both games it was a case of players adapting and sympathetic refereeing.
