Sandal to Derby is no big deal distance wise and more importantly the 2 clubs are from different leagues (Derby have already played Bromsgrove twice and presumably Heath and Sandal have too).

But I would prefer 4 more league games and certainty about when your home games are at the start of the season. Distances for Derby in the Cup games have been fine, but clearly that is not the case for others. Poor form to play a home game and then call off the next one away though!!

I think you will find breaching the regulations regarding the payment of players does not just mean you lose travel allowance but, the possibility of RFU grants and Loans, International tickets and any chance of getting an all weather pitch from the RFU.

And you get relegated. As Medway found out back in 2016.

It's not paying players that gets you relegated. It 's paying them without contracts in place and without any payslip or the necessary obligations to HMRC (as was the case with Medway)

Rossendale v Alnwick -  Alnwick not travelling
Garstang v Thirsk  - Thirsk not travelling
Widnes v Hullensians - Hullensians not travelling

Leagues for 2023 - 2024

With the leagues finishing early does that mean the fixtures for next season will be out earlier rather than mid June.

I hope so, it's the most infuriating wait through May-June checking the London RFU page at 9:00am every day for some sort of update.

Doesn't it depend upon knowing:
  • the number of teams in the Championship next year
  • whether that number includes Wasps
  • the number of teams therefore being relegated to/ promoted from Level Three, and
  • the knock-on effect on clubs further down the pyramid?
Two games left in National One, and nobody knows how many teams will be relegated.

I've heard that the RFU are sitting down to discuss fixtures on the last Monday of August. Oh sorry no, that's a bank holiday - so the day after. Fixtures can then be circulated in good time for the start of the season the following Saturday.

It is anticipated that at levels 5 & 6 leagues will be reduced to 8 teams each with a rest week after every 2 games. Teams will then be invited to join the ever-popular national cups!

Except the Premiership, who will be told the Friday before so the papers with long words can create a 3 page pull out.
The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.

So as of Thursday, the casualty list looks like:

Regional 2 North Plate: Kettering, Olney (w), Northampton Old Scouts (h)
Reg 2 North Shield: Bradford and Bingley, Nuneaton Old Edwardians
Counties 2 North: Plate Nottingham Casuals (h), Southam
Counties 2 South: Plate Shoreham
Counties 2 North: Shield Bakewell Mannerians (h) Cleobury Mortimer

Counties 3 Championship: Halifax (w)
Counties 3 South Plate: Somerton (h)
Counties 3 South Shield: Lankelly-Fowey (h)

Plus those teams that pulled out of pools earlier - so all of these had got through the first round.
Those labelled (h) were due to play at home but conceded an Away Walk Over.
Those marked (w) had won their first round match. All the others had byes.

Any errors or omissions are mine.

Kempston Blue - were you not aware that the Premiership fixtures for the next ten years have already been worked out - how else will Wasps know when they are permitted to return.

I honestly do believe the whole "Finals on Coronation Day" concept is playing a very big part as well as travel.

To be fair to the RFU, not something I often say, when they planned this season, they were not aware there was going to be a coronation this year.

However, that does not give them a free pass for all the other mistakes.

Just to add Tunbridge Wells withdrew from their match at Bedford Athletic tomorrow. The official communication from the RFU stated as well as awarding Ath five points for the walkover, Tunbridge Wells were being deducted two points which is something that isn't showing on the pool tables.

Alnwick are not going to Rossendale for their dead rubber.

Bridgenorth have conceded their home game to Syston - so Syston go through.

So only three of the eight games in the Regional 1 Championship are going ahead.
Shelford, who have no points, are currently still going to Harpenden.
I feel I should not need to be praising the PeaHuckleberrys for this, but much as it goes against the grain, I will.
