This weekend sees the half way point in the season and the league makes for interesting reading, some of the sides lost matches to the weather, so have games in hand, but already we can see some dog fights already beginning to show.
Stourbridge are finding themselves a bit adrift at the bottom, with 4 or 5 sides above them all battling to climb clear of the drop.
Leicester Lions find themselves with an 11 point cushion at the top of the table and welcome 3rd place local rivals Hinckley to the Blaby ground this weekend to add some spice to the pre- Christmas derby match. With 6 or 7 sides battling for a shot at the top of the table, the second half of the season will see some cracking contests.
Lions have some tough away games coming up with away fixtures against Dings, Clifton and Redruth amongst some of the toughest facing them, so all will see their opportunity to climb the table as the season comes to a climax in April........................still a long way to go.

A bit of a split appearing, though Loughboro Students have played more games than Old Reds, who could close that gap.

Some gaps beginning to open, Stour do seem to have an unsurmountable challenge, with any of the five above them all looking behind them.
Group of four in the middle seem clear of the drop at the moment, with the top four still not away from them. Lions now ten points clear after dropping a bonus point at home to a feisty Luctonians.
Still a long way to go though.

Hinckley v Loughborough Students
Hornets v Stourbridge
Old Redcliffians v Bournville
Dings Crusaders v Leicester Lions
Luctonians v Barnstaple
Newport v Redruth
Exeter University v Clifton

We have had a look and posted our guesses|(or is it calculated assessment) of the likely outcomes, but this is a set of mouth watering fixtures. Local derby with a history of no love lost between the sides in Leicestershire, should be a home win, but the Students are able to use a lot of Tiger cubs at their disposal, they ought to be doing better than they are.
Hornets v Stour has a relegation battle look about it, each game Stour lose now is surely a nail in the coffin so to speak, they seem to be rallying, can they pull off a great escape?
Old Reds and Bournville is another match between two sides who are probably looking over their shoulders down the league rather than up, not must win game, but pretty close to it, should be a belter.
Dings v the Lions this going to be the battle of the weekend, probably more important that the home side gets a win, but the Lions won't want to trip up and leave it to the end of the season, not a game for the squeamish I would think, it'll be brutal up front where I expect the Lions to dominate.(obviously I'm biased here lol)
Lucts seem to have got a grasp on this, sort out their discipline after last week and they will fancy a home victory, Barnstaple know they are now in a dog fight, so have to throw everything at this fixture.
Newport are finding it tough and against the perennial promotion contesters in Redruth, this weekends match could be a tough one, but Redruth have tripped up themselves, so this one is tight to call.
Talking of tight to call Exeter Uni began the season at a blinding pace, but seem to have slipped a bit, if they are to set up a challenge, this is a must win for them. Clifton however know exactly what they have to do, if the lose and Leicester Lions get points at Dings, the title could be slipping away, this a cup final of a match.

Well the weather was the biggest winner with only three fixtures escaping, but what important results they were.
Hornets win over Stourbridge gives them a nice lift, but Stourbridge must be worried now, still a long way to go but these potential relegation battles need winning.
Dings will no doubt feel aggrieved scoring more tries but losing the match, Lions will no doubt be heaving a sigh of relief, very important away win for them.
The same can be said about Clifton, a bonus point win in Exeter means they close the gap by one point, they are definitely having a go, it's a long way yet to the end of the season, but already the games are getting more and more important.

I see on the East page some are trying to predict a top five, I'm not that brave yet, Dings was a big hurdle, but the Lions still have to travel to Redruth and Clifton, so no chicken counting just yet.

Exeter University 4-1 Hornets
Stourbridge 1-4 Hinckley
Loughborough Students 4-1 Newport
Redruth 5-1 Luctonians
Barnstaple 1-4 Dings Crusaders
Leicester Lions 5-0 Old Redcliffians
Clifton 5-0 Bournville

Thoughts behind these predictions, as you will have seen I'm flippin' useless at this.
I've gone for the home side here, but Hornets are settling into this and they don't have too far to travel, so the journey shouldn't affect them as much. Exeter seem to have lost that early season sparkle, is that because the grounds are slowing the game down and the forwards are finding the going tough?
Stour are showing signs of turning the corner and this is getting close to home games being do or die, but I fancy Hincks are still fancying their chances in this league.
Gone for home win again for the Students, Newport showed they are strong side at home, but the trip across the Midlands might be too much.
Redruth will be too strong at home, Lucts will push them, they are very good side.
Barnstaple might be on the end of a wounded Dings after some recompense after last week, Barnstaple are a tough side at home, it could be close.
Old Reds won't be coming to just make up the numbers and will be out to spoil the party, but I fancy the Lions are focussed on the job.
Clifton won't want to slip up in the chase for points and are going to be putting on a show at home, the Chocco's will give it their all, but it could be tough ask.

Seems I can pick the winners but not the scores, some sides did better than I predicted others not so well.
Not much change at the top of the table with the top half teams all winning, Stourbridge are looking increasingly to be in trouble and any of the 5 teams above them looking under threat.
Only 4 games next week as some postponed fixtures are sorted, but there's a humdinger in prospect in one of them.

This weekend sees local rivals go head to head in two contests, Barnstaple and near neighbours Hornets lock horns with only three points separating the two sides and both keen to continue their climb to safety in the league.
Leicester Lions are in sparkling form, their last three games seeing them hold their opponents to nil scores in the second halves of their games to maintain their record equalling un beaten run. Hinckley are no slouches either but find themselves a bit behind the league leaders and having already lost the reverse fixture earlier in the season will be out to try and take the local bragging rights.
Newport welcome Dings who are sitting third and will be keen to keep the points coming, Newport however really have got to win their home games to climb from third from the bottom.
Old Redcliffians will be keen to get some results going their way, putting together some spirited performances means Exeter Uni will have to be at their best.
My weekly stabs in the dark at picking who will prevail has me going with home win for Exeter Uni, though this could be close. I have tipped Dings to win in Newport, but again fancy the home side to push them hard, Dings will need to be on top form. Barnstaple against Hornets really could go either way, I nearly went for a rare draw with this one.
Finally I tipped the Lions to win 5-0, but I know it won't be easy even at home, but the home record speaks for it's self, could be a feisty and high scoring encounter.

I think it's fair to say the Leicester Lions made a bit of a statement at home yesterday, not seen a report yet, but 7 tries was a very good effort.

My predictions this week are for all home wins, no slight on the visiting sides at all as they all need points in the league.
Old Reds have games in hand, but to butcher a well known saying points on the board are worth more than games in the hand, they will hope to find Hinckley bruised after last weeks fixture.
Exeter Uni seem to have slipped into mid table after a promising seasons start, but Redruth have not been as clinical this season either, this is a must win game for the home side if the leaders are not to open up the gap at the top of the table.
Clifton and Dings is doing to be a corker for sure, both have aspirations to top the league, but Clifton do seem to have got their act together and I think home advantage will be the key here.
Luctonians are a tough side and I fear this trip might be a bit of a tall ask for Barnstaple, but the visitors are also in need of points to climb out of the drop zone.

Serious sounding injury at Hinckley, game had to be moved to another pitch, unsure of player condition or if the game has finished yet.

Hinckley won, not sure of score. Injured player was Hinckley’s number 10 , Archie Head? Medics there within 10 mins and taken to hospital. Get well soon

Well I've steered away from controversy long enough, time to bait a hook and see what happens lol/
Most leagues seem to be playing the guess who's going to win or fall game, so here's my six pennorth for what it's worth.
I think the bottom six are likely to stay as they are, minor adjustment possible. even if the Stourbridge members do vote for certain death of their club and let in what looks like fully professional asset strippers.
The top is likely to be a bit more uncertain, though with Clifton getting turned over at home yesterday, a 12 point lead is looking more comfortable, but we know what has happened in the past.
so the top could well be
Leicester Lions
Clifton
Dings
Redruth
and the bottom
Newport
Bournville
Barnstaple
Stourbridge....................................so what do ya think?

This coming weekends games are full of intrigue with quite a few games that could go either way, there's so much at stake as we start to move towards the end game.
Lucts v Loughboro' Students being a game to show this, Lucts were struggling to establish a run of results, but have put in some fine performances leading me to predict a home win, but the Students really ought to doing better than they are, they seem to be struggling away from home. Only two points separate them but home advantage should see Lucts home.
Newport and Stour find themselves at the wrong end of the table, putting aside the off field shenanigans I still see Newport taking the points, though to be fair, Stour have started to play and a result is bound to come, just maybe too many distractions for them this week with an uncertain future for the club.
Hinckley are a good side at home and Exeter Uni, a bit like their fellow Students at Loughboro' seem to have begun well, but seem to have drifted into the mid table position, 5 points would see them level with Hinckley, but I think the journey may be a fruitless one.
Bournville will be looking forward to the visit of leaders Leicester Lions, they will fancy causing an upset at home and this is a potential banana skin of a game, but I predict the Lions to continue their unbeaten run for another week, they really are in fine form just now.
I've gone for another home win in the Old Reds v Barnstaple game as I feel the home side with a couple of games in hand will be going for a climb away from the danger zone, the pressure is on for the visitors to get some points for their own climb, but this might be a tough ask this weekend.
Dings v Redruth is going to be a corker, two sides both with one eye on the top of the table will both have this game down as a must win, I've gone for a home win, but this one could go either way, I think a high scoring close game here.
Hornets will have their hands full, Clifton cannot let another game slip from their grasp if they are to get the gap at the top of the table to close, I've tipped Hornets to perform at home, but Clifton to take the majority of the points on offer.

Well is it too soon to say that this weekend could be season defining?
Hornets v Hinckley
Exeter University v Newport
Stourbridge v Luctonians
Loughborough Students v Dings Crusaders
Clifton v Leicester Lions
Redruth v Old Redcliffians
Barnstaple v Bournville

I've gone for a home win for Hornets, Hinckley need the win to maintain their desired top four finish, but Hornets are fighting the drop zone.
Gone home win again for Exeter Uni, they are too far away from either end of the leagues, so if they continue the fine display that they showed at Hinckley, they should have too much for Newport(Salop)
I cannot see how Stourbridge can conjure up a win now, they seem to have lost their way and all this off field business cannot help their players concentrate on the job in hand, Luctonians won't have it all their own way, but I fancy an away win here.
Loughboro Students are a bit like Exeter Uni, not going to bother either end of the league and Dings are building up a head of steam for their traditional charge for the top of the table, another away win I think.
This is the tie of the round first visiting second in the league, a winner takes all? well no not quite, but if my predicted away win for the Lions does occur, then the implications are clear. Both sides will know what this means. Clifton have shown chinks in their armour and I reckon this Lions side can exploit that.
Redcliffians are fighting their way away from the bottom of the table, but Redruth at home, another side on a traditional charge for the top of the table, this match has home win written all over it I think.
Bournville showed against the Leicester Lions last week that they are no easy side to take and Barnstaple are not really firing, this match could go either way and I expect it to be close, but I've taken the easy option and called home advantage here.

After some impressive results this weekend the league looks to be in two halves with any of the top half capable of finishing in the top four and any of the lower half possible bottom three candidates.
With Redruth, Clifton, Dings and Hinckley all losing this weekend the table has tightened up in the middle, but the bottom three are looking set. Stour are putting together some performances but they just can't buy a win, Bournville's win and a game in hand could just give them a chance, but Newport keep finding points and also have a game in hand, Barnstaple seem to be finding the going tough, losing at home to rivals Bournville could be crucial.
Can I see anyone catching leaders Lions at the top? well of course it could happen, but with only two away games at Hornets and Redruth, the fixture list is looking kind for them, concentration will be vital.

It's not the bottom 3 that matters. Only 2 relegation places this season, so the real scrap is between Barnstaple, Bournville and Stourbridge as to which of them escapes the drop. As you say, our nail-biting win away in North Devon yesterday could prove to be crucial, but there's still a long way to go and many potential banana skins along the way.

I'm pleased to see none of you have brought Newport into the equation but we are far from resting easy with much work still to be done. Yes I am hopeful we will survive and with 5 of our 7 remaining games at home we have some sort of advantage but the last few games of anyone's season tends to throw up some unusual results and certainly we have a case where teams with their backs to the wall playing, yes good teams, but with nothing left to play for. All I can say is expect the unexpected!

Yes us armchair experts doing the weekly predictions could well get a bloody nose with clubs fighting at both end of the table. This is exactly why the ring fencing of the Premiership is wrong morally and from a spectators point of view, robbing them of a spectacle worthy of paying the gate fee.

Talking of which....................
Old Redcliffians v Loughborough Students
Dings Crusaders v Stourbridge
Luctonians v Exeter University
Newport v Hornets
Leicester Lions v Barnstaple
Bournville v Redruth
Hinckley v Clifton

Once again I'm taking a few easy options where close games may well go with home advantage and I begin with the first one. Old Reds one place behind the Students in the league, it's going to be a middle of the table tussle, but with Old Reds just needing a few more points just to make sure they don't drift down the table, home win for me.
Dings v Stour looks like a banker home win, but what do I know, stranger things have happened, but not this week. Home win.
Lucts v Exeter Uni could be even closer, this has draw written all over it, but as they are rarer than me being correct, I have gone for a 5-2 points tally in favour of the home side.
Newport v Hornets is another that could go either way and again I've gone home win again in what I predict to be a close encounter.
This one is one I feel Huckleberryy enough to say this is a home win, with only one loss at home all season, I will put the kiss of death on the Lions going 5-0 in the points tally.
Bournville need the win more than anyone, but I don't think Redruth are going to slip up again, this one I've gone away win.
Hinckley are a fine side at home(not bad away either), but Clifton still believe they can catch the Lions and will go for this like their season depends on it, they threw everything into their game last week and I expect them to make sure they don't lose to another Leicestershire side, away win for me.

Despite the carnage that was my weekly predictions, I was very impressed with some of the score sheets, every game is a battle, some very high scoring matches and surprises as well.
The league is by no means fixed and there's still a lot of rugby to be played, Cliftons score line at Hinckley(one prediction I did come close to predicting) shows they have not given up chasing the Leicester Lions position. Lions were made to work hard in the first half by a very determined Barum side, again a second half performance saw the league leaders home. Loughboro' Students breaking Old Reds hearts in the last moments of the game, Dings, Lucts and Newport romping home in their home fixtures and Bournville showing they aren't done yet beating Redruth, all sets up some mouth watering fixtures next weekend.

Hinckley 4-1 Newport
Hornets 1-4 Luctonians
Exeter University 2-5 Dings Crusaders
Stourbridge 1-4 Old Redcliffians
Loughborough Students 5-2 Bournville
Redruth 2-5 Leicester Lions
Clifton 5-0 Barnstaple

Well I'll try and justify my daftness in the above...........................
Hinckley are seemingly finding the business end of the season tough, still think they'll win at home, but not easily.
Lucts seem to be finding their mojo and I reckon the can pinch this win.
Exeter Uni v Dings really could go either way, but I fancy Dings pinching a close one.
Stour are I think done for the year, if half of what is being said is true I would not be surprised if they couldn't raise a side, Old Reds to win.
Loughboro' Students v the Choccos could be close too, but I've gone for home advantage.
Last season Redruth lost in their last game to the Lions, spoiling their party, I reckon that despite some drop in recent form they will do their best to pee on Lions parade. It will be close, but Lions will nick it.
Clifton will keep on battling to the end, don't see them losing at home, despite Barnstaple's storming form last weekend.

Well apart from Stours fine home win I got the results right just not got the hang of predicting the scores. Still all to play for but as next week is a catch up weekend with only three fixtures, nothing is yet decided at either end of the league.
Old Redcliffians 1-4 Luctonians
Hinckley 5-2 Loughborough Students
Newport 1-4 Redruth
My predictions for the coming week are a lot less confident as any of these could be the opposite, all the teams have something to scrap for, Hinckley and Loughboro' have the not insignificant local bragging rights to go for and Hinckley want to stay in the top four, Loughboro' may feel they haven't had the best of the season and will want to finish on a high note.
I think Old Reds are safe from the drop zone, but Lucs will want to try and push for the top four slot themselves, this one will be close too I think and could easily go either way.
Newport will really want this one, points still required to avoid the drop zone, but I expect Redruth to bounce back after this weekends fixture.

Old Redcliffians 1-4 Luctonians
Hinckley 5-2 Loughborough Students
Newport 1-4 Redruth

So ............................didn't I do well.
Hats off to Old Reds and Newport, superb results and Hinckley surviving by their fingernails, getting a penalty try in the last 5 minutes to level the score having been behind all game. Old Reds and Newport climb out of the bottom four danger zone whilst Hinckley cling on to the top four.  Redruth and the Students sit just in the top half, both capable of having an effect on the league positions of others, Redruth travel to Barnstaple who are in desperate need for points and the Students are away to Table toppers Leicester Lions, motivation for all sides for sure.

Leicester Lions 5-0 Loughborough Students
Bournville 4-1 Stourbridge
Old Redcliffians 5-2 Exeter University
Dings Crusaders 5-0 Hornets
Luctonians 5-2 Hinckley
Barnstaple 1-4 Redruth
Newport 2-5 Clifton

Some real guessing and a bit of hoping all mixed together this week, it would be nice for the Lions to top off their excellent season with a win at home against local rivals, but will any nerves kick in or is the focus where it will need to be, it won't be one way traffic, but a home win seems the right call.
Bournville v Stour really has everything to play for a must win for both sides if they are to have a chance of avoiding the drop, home advantage could be enough.
Old Reds v Exeter Uni could go either way, I expect it to be high scoring and close, but again home advantage is my easy option choice.
Dings v Hornets should be a home banker, but with Hornets having one eye looking over their shoulder, this could be closer than I think.
Lucts v Hinckley is a battle for a top four spot and it could go either way, two strong sides, again I think high scoring with home advantage the boring option, but I think it will play into it.
Barnstaple desperate for points and Redruth having suffered with injuries, this game really could go either way, past form says an away win, but this could be the surprise of the round.
Newport have been putting in the performances and at home all my arguments should say they'll win, but Clifton will not give up on catching the Lions, so an away win for me.

There were some who thought this league was weaker and watered down, well the results say different, there's been superb games I have watched on youtube, effort, skill and really competitive games from start to finish.

Well I must have done well equal first with Greenpower in the weeks guessing.............er I mean skilful predicting league.
But were there not some great results? Old Reds v Exeter Uni a draw and Bournville sneaking in by a point against Stourbridge.
Newport making it hard work for Clifton, Barnstaple picking a point against Redruth. Lucts taking a good scalp from Hinckley, Dings and Hornets having a good old West Country tussle giving the league an a very interesting look.
My old side finally, after coming close back in Nat 2 North, make it to the top as Champions after a very good performance against the Students.

Newport 5-2 Luctonians
Hinckley 5-2 Dings Crusaders
Hornets 2-5 Old Redcliffians
Exeter University 5-2v Bournville
Leicester Lions 5-0 Stourbridge
Loughborough Students 5-0 Barnstaple
Clifton 5-0 Redruth
After the giddy heights of last week I might just come a cropper this week, with only one away win predicted it looks like I've not given it much thought or I've taken the easy route. Looking at the table and recent results it just feels about right. There will be some battles, Stour will want to spoil the Lions party, I don't think they can beat the drop now, but just for old times sake I expect them to put on a show. Can't see this Lions side taking their foot off the gas though, same with Clifton, they'll want to finish on a high and old rivals Redruth will make them fight for it. The ones I've gone 5-2 are the ones that I think could go either way.
I'm in hospital this week to have my prostate removed along with a kidney stone, so I might not get to do the scores on Saturday, just depends how it goes.

Coming to the sharp end of the season now, we know who goes up and one of those going down, a very telling set of games to look forward to this weekend.

Redruth 4-1 Loughborough Students
Barnstaple 1-4 Stourbridge
Leicester Lions 5-0 Exeter University
Bournville 4-1 Hornets
Old Redcliffians 4-1 Hinckley
Dings Crusaders 5-1 Newport
Luctonians 2-5 Clifton
My predictions are more based on a gut feeling than any sort of knowledge what so ever.
Redruth at home should be more than enough for a Students side who have been inconsistent, they began well on the hard ground, but seem to have lost that early edge
Barum at home will be no easy game, but going on the way Stourbridge played against the Lions last time out, they are playing for pride and I think they could well have enough to take the points.
I think the Lions at home will be strong enough to maintain the unbeaten run against another Student side that did better on the firm ground.
The Choccos seem to be finding their fighting spirit, Hornets won't roll over though, this could be close and go either way.
Hinckley declared a strong desire to finish in the top four, this is do or die, but away to Old Reds might be a step too far, again a close one that could go either way.
Dings at home to Newport is I think more of a home banker, Newport have done well this year and I think are now safe from the drop, doesn't mean they will roll over, just I think Redruth are too strong at home.
Lucts v Clifton is the tie of the round for me, two sides who will be wanting to finish on a high, home advantage should be enough, but Clifton are a tough side to beat, high scoring and close and yet again would not surprise me if I get this one wrong.

Well I made a right pigs ear of last weeks predictions, not too sure I will do any better with this weeks either, I am certainly not going to emulate my teams success and trouble the top of the league that's for sure. Mind you I didn't win the the North league one year and it was me that took over running it!!!

Luctonians 4-1 Dings Crusaders
Newport 1-4 Old Redcliffians
Hinckley 4-1 Bournville
Hornets 0-5 Leicester Lions
Exeter University 5-1 Barnstaple
Stourbridge 0-5 Redruth
Loughborough Students 5-2 Clifton
Lucts at home are proving to be a handful, but Dings are no push overs, this really is a close one to call, gone for the easy option home win.
Newport at home could have enough, but somehow Old Reds have caught my eye for am away upset.
The Choccos are fighting for survival, but Hincks at home may be too much/
Hornets are a good side and are also fighting for survival in the league, just don't see Lions losing.
Two really good sides meet in Exeter, but the home side on their own pitch should seal a home win.
Stour won't give up, but Redruth are a side who don't give an inch, they will want to finish on a high note.
I've gone for a Students home win, but I expect a high scoring flowing game that really could go either way, Clifton will not want to lose this, could even be a draw.

I am pleased to report that following 4 wins in our last 5 games the Choccos are now mathematically safe from relegation for this season whatever happens on Saturday. Stourbridge and Barnstaple are the unlucky two clubs going down. But Hinckley away will certainly be a big challenge for us.

Well I came second in the last full week in the prediction league, not too sure how I managed that, some great results and although there are still a couple of games to finish up the season, I think it's fair to say Nat 2 West for all the logistical challenges seems to have produced some great rugby.

Don't know if next weeks fixture at Exeter will take place or not, but as it will not have an effect on the table I thought I'd sum up my thoughts on this first season of National 2 West.
Some voiced an opinion that it would be a diluted league and the standard would drop and there would be cricket scores and mis matches, well the results showed otherwise. As you can see from the predictions table(thanks Camquin for running that) we all had difficulties getting the results right, such was the open nature of the league. Battle at the bottom, with the exception of the Stourbridge situation went on to almost the end of the season. The battle at the top went on with the top three sides battling away, with Dings no doubt pleased that it was them that took the only away win at Blaby during the season, the top four all showed the leagues exceptional standard.
Hinckley led the middle table battles and again this group were capable of turning in some superb efforts. Newport, Bournville and Hornets, will all be the better next season after their fine performances and Barum really were unlucky to find points in a competitive season hard to come by.
How will the Lions do in Nat 1, well who knows, but I think the squad showed the right sort of skills and resilience to be competitive, there will be some familiar teams they have faced before and some new ones to visit for the first time.
