I almost thought this was going to be our Brethren who play League.

So the QF draw has worked out to keep the top 4 apart, as seeded. That will probably mean 4 one-sided games, but then the real action will start. Shame that England will be playing in the middle of the night until the final (if we get there). Even the final is a bit early - might have to stick to Buck's Fizz or BM until HT at least!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/rugby-union/63578455" rel="nofollow - Holly Aitchison joins Emily Scarratt in England centres for final
Holly Aitchison and Emily Scarratt will form England's starting centre partnership for the first time at this World Cup in Saturday's final against hosts and holders New Zealand.
Star full-back Helena Rowland will miss the match because of a foot injury sustained in the semi-finals.
Ellie Kildunne starts at 15 and Lydia Thompson comes in on the wing.
Claudia MacDonald moves to the bench, providing cover at scrum-half with Lucy Packer out of the squad.
Lock Cath O'Donnell is a surprise inclusion among the replacements, having last featured in the pool stage against France, as Rosie Galligan misses out.
Prop Hannah Botterman is unavailable because of a knee injury, meaning Shaunagh Brown is once again included on the bench.
England: Kildunne; Thompson, Scarratt, Aitchison, Dow; Harrison, Infante; Cornborough, Cokayne, Bern, Aldcroft, Ward, Matthews, M Packer, Hunter (capt).
Replacements: Davies, Muir, Brown, O'Donnell, Cleall, Kabeya, MacDonald, Heard.
Middleton coy on reasons for Aitchison inclusion
England have won their past 30 Tests, but have never beaten New Zealand in a World Cup final in four attempts.
The most recent of those defeats came in 2017, when the Black Ferns brought a different gameplan to come from behind in the second half and claim the title.
With a clash of styles expected as England play a forwards-focused game and New Zealand bring an unpredictable backline, England head coach Simon Middleton understandably wanted to keep his gameplan under wraps.
He simply stated that Aitchison had been picked because she can offer his side "certain things" against New Zealand.
Tatyana Heard has started the past three games at 12 and moves to the bench to make way for Aitchison, whose only start of the tournament came at 13 against South Africa in the pool stage.
Middleton has shuffled his midfield in this tournament before - Rowland started as his 12 before being moved to full-back and she will be missed after some stellar performances this World Cup.
Scarratt and Aitchison last combined to help England claim the Women's Six Nations Grand Slam in France in April and Middleton will hope they can deliver under even more adversity at a sold-out Eden Park.
Aitchison does have form against New Zealand, having scored a try on debut against the Black Ferns in the autumn of 2021.
"There can be no bigger challenge in sport than to play the world champions in their own back yard in front of a sellout crowd - 99.9% of which will be forming part of the opposition," Middleton said.
"Great teams don't fear those challenges, they embrace them and meet them head on - that's what we intend to do."
Contrasting with England, New Zealand director of rugby Wayne Smith has opted for consistency in his selection.
Number eight Charmaine McMenamin is the only change to the side that beat France in the semi-finals, replacing Liana Mikaele-Tu'u, who sustained a thumb injury in that match.
Once again, the Black Ferns will field a formidable back three of Portia Woodman, Ruby Tui and Renee Holmes.
New Zealand: Holmes; Tui, Fluhler, Fitzpatrick, Woodman; Demant (capt), Huckleberrysedge; Love, Ponsonby, Rule, Roos, C Bremner, A Bremner, Hirini, McMenamin.
Replacements: Connor, Murray, Taumata, Ngan-Woo, Simon, Bayler, Tubic, Leti-I'iga. |

I was talking at work about BBC Sports Team of the Year award.
England Lionesses currently have to be favourite.
With 6 World Cup Finals before Christmas who will take over the driving seat?
Will discuss again Monday.
Good luck Roses and T20 team?

The Roses are in the final. The male cricketers are in their final - somewhat emphatically. Our 13-a side "friends" seem to have all three sides in the semi-finals. The footballers are off to Qatar.
So obviously Eddie Jones and his boys are the greatest team, due to their excellent results showing how well-prepared they are for next year's world cup.

Glad I didn't see your cricket prediction earlier Tulip, given that at time you made it our bowlers were being flayed to all parts (47 off last 3 overs!) by India...

Commiserations to the Red Roses, and congratulations to the Black Ferns. That was an impressive competitive match worthy of being the World Cup Final. Disappointing that England incurred the early red card but glad it didn't knock the team off their stride.
The Red Roses should return home with heads held high and the intent in their hearts to set things right in 2025.

Have to beg to differ on some points Steve: England were knocked off their stride - I think they would have won easily without the RC. They played with heart throughout, but unfortunately the T-CUP mantra of 2003 wasn't evident in the closing stages, when there were gilt-edged chances to win the game. Such a well-resourced and dominant side should have delivered the trophy, and it's very disappointing this didn't happen. The 'we go again next time' line is one that's often clung to in a losing context, but it's not much consolation when it's 3 or 4 years away and several of the best players of today will have long since hung up their boots by then. Several other countries may well have caught up by then, which in many ways is good if future tournaments are more competitive than this one, but won't increase chances of another England team lifting the trophy.
Sorry if the above is a bit harsh, there seems to be a tendency that people go easier on female professional players & their coaches than in the men's game, not sure why. It was a magnificent, compelling game, but that's limited consolation (to me, others are free to feel differently) when you lose.

would also add - I thought the ref Hollie Davidson was excellent in a pressure game. What quibbles I had with the officiating stemmed from 'over-contribution' from the TMO - tv officials seem to think they have free rein these days to stick their oar in for every knock-on, lineout etc. Some of the more confident refs (Barnes, Pearce, Owens) tend to assert their authority & point out who's in charge...

Agree about the TMO. Contribute when asked by the Ref or for foul play but not for a was it touched or not a couple of minutes later. Games will last 2 hours if TMOs have to intervene for every little action.
