Good win for The Pirates on the road. Feels like all the new boys are settling in well and this competition has been an excellent pre-season for us. Obviously tougher tests to come, but any win away from home is good going - especially at The RAG which has been a bit of a bogey ground for us over the years. ------------- *Stalwart |

Poor old Cambridge were already in awful nick last week. I was told that their replacemwnt hooker had been playing for the 3rds the week before, and thwy picked up a few more injuries in that game. So I can't imagine what shape they were in for this match.

Fair enough. Like a lot of the Champ clubs, the Prem outfits will have been using these last few games as pre-season warm ups to get that winning feeling for the start of Prem also. To be fair to Cambridge, looking at the other scorelines across the Prem Cup, and the recent form of those particular Champ clubs, I'd say they'll be able to give the likes of Ampthill and Scottish a decent game when the league kicks off. Looking forward to seeing the Bedford v Tigers scores come in, that should be game of the day.

I spent a very enjoyable afternoon at Cambridge last week watching them play Ealing. Whilst they were comfortably beaten over 80 minutes, Cambridge were very competitive in the first half. I can’t see anything ahead of them this season other than a scrap for Championship survival, there was enough on display to suggest that they may win that scrap. ------------- Speak softly, but carry a big stick. |

Just got back from Bristol, as I picked up a puncture and needed to get new tyres before heading home. Ashton Gate is a magnificent venue, and the stewards were excellent. Also, ticket, parking and a beer at Bristol cost less them my standing ticket at Franklin Gardens - and they charged for parking. As to the match, Cambridge put in a lot of good tackles, but Bristol managed to keep recycling the ball, and moved it with such pace they simply found another gap. And everything they tried worked. Cambridge muffed two scoring chances, one pass was just out of fingertip range, and we fumbled a ball with the line begging - no names as players were putting in a magnificent shift. We are where we are, and know who we are fighting, and it is not Bristol. However, hopefully we have learned something from these games - and not suffered too many injuries ------------- Sweeney Delenda Est |

HT Blues (2 tries) 12-21 (3 tries) Tigers A penalty try and yellow cost Blues 14 quick points, when we should’ve just accepted the try, but Blues go down the slope 2nd half, for hopefully the attacking onslaught we try to implement going down it.

Obviously it wasn’t a 1st XV but still a win against a well drilled side who were very quick in defence in a very fast pace game which Blues appeared fitter (always helps going down the slope). Lots of big hits from both sides and a massive improvement after the last 2 weeks.

| Nottingham v Quins looked like being one way traffic after 20mins, but snorts defence sharpened up and they scored 3 good tries. Quins scrum dominance and capitalising on errors made it a comfortable win in the end though. A really entertaining game. |

Great performance by Blues, albeit against a scratch Tigers team. Optimistic for next season. Blues have a bit more depth than last season. Having 2 quality players at both loosehead and tighthead is going to make an enormous difference. Cam King looks a star in the making at number 8. If we can sort out the lineout, get Alex Day fit and get some luck with injuries, I think we should be able to compete for 3rd with the likes of Doncaster. Has anyone heard anything about a decision on how Jersey’s cancelled cup fixtures are being handled? Precedent seems to suggest that a bonus point win will be awarded to the affected teams. If that proves to be the case, Ealing Trailfinders are likely to go into the semifinals as top seeds. I saw a lot of Tigers fans moaning about not picking a better team to play Blues, as they will likely be going away to Ealing now when they could have had a home semi. In the past they have either given a 20 - 0 Bp win, but I also think they have stripped results against Jersey. I imagine it will be the former to have all clubs with 5 games.

As I posted earlier on another thread.. Eurosport.com were reporting that the Prem cup rules stated that should a team fail to play a game due to "unforeseen circumstances" the result would be deemed a 0-0 draw but I haven't seen that elsewhere. Seems a bit odd that you would earn 2 points for not turning up!

| Much to my almost complete shock, Ealing (and Pirates) have both been awarded 20-0, 4 try walkovers for the Jersey games. This means that Ealing will host a semi-final against Leicester Tigers on Sunday 18th February at 1500, which will be televised live on TNT Sports. This determination also make Ealing top seeds (24 pool points, 5 wins, and PD of 99), so if they should happen to win that match, then they would also ensure a home cup final. |

Well - Ealing's comms say that we're hosting the match on Twitter and their website, but Tigers says 'time and venue TBC', so let's see what happens. Given that we have 4 months, I'd like to think that this is the perfect opportunity for Ealing to push their planning permission, or even just attempt to get temporary permission to bring in stands to get the capacity up for the match. Tigers have a notoriously large following, so I could see this being a sell out at 5k (or am I dreaming?).

| Ealing season ticketholdrrs were given a window today to buy tickets to the semi vs. Tigers. Some consternation though as we were not given the option to book our usual seats, and instead they go to Leicester fans or PRL bigwigs. Quite pricey too, with best seats at £75, regular seated £40. |

Apparently it was out of Ealing's hands the RFU and Premiership said they needed all the best seating for their use first. Of course this is where a majority of the season ticket holders sit. Now the cost of the tickets is another matter and where I suspect the club are trying to cash in. The irony is the Early Bird email was trying to drum up support for Ealing saying how well Leicester travel and how we need us there to be vocal for our club, whilst telling us to not sit in our usual seats and pay over twice the price for the privilege. As gerg mentioned this has gone down like a lead balloon.

My guess would be that much of this is on ground improvements, and/or preparation for them. The playing squad is big, but there is no way the expenditure on it is anything like £4m based on what I have heard from players.

There's no growth in Assets so it's operating costs meaning players, coaches and facilties. Ealing has a women's squad as well. They're pro aren't they?

The whole cost of the women's squad is capped at 190k/annum. I'm sure that there are considerable coaching costs, and expenses, but it doesn't come close to touching the men's squad.
