Looks like Peterborough are really setting their stall down with the signing of James stokes from Coventry. (Top try scorer in nat1 last year). Looks like they are not looking at a return to the midlands premier anytime soon.

southcoastsupport ..........I saw Joe bimbling round the Rugby Park with a couple of mini-Govetts in tow...at the recent Sussex game.  He did make a come-back a year or so back ?  Got injured almost immediately ?

It would be great to see him fit and back at the club......getting properly fit would be a major commitment though, after all this time  ?

That is an outstanding acquisition for Lions........Stokes has been an outstanding player for many seasons now and was bound for the Championship with Cov,  where he was an ever present ?

I suspect (pure guesswork I concede) that he has decided he has had enough of the travelling ?

I am still surprised as I think he was one of the few that Rowland Winter took with him from Cambridge and I thought I read that he was contracted at Cov for a while longer ?
It does seem somewhat bizarre that he has joined a promoted Nat3 (level 5) side while on the brink of a return to level 2 ?
I suppose Peterborough having shedloads of cash and ambition is another possibility ? No idea on that one.

Very curious.

Yes it would be interesting to see if Govett could get himself fit again after this long out. From what I gather he has finished his studying and has had a child and is now looking to return to playing. We shall have to wait and see if he shows up at the beginning of the season.

Very good player. Leaving Cindy for work reasons I think. Rather misleadingly named... he's a big lad for a winger.

Great news for us. Having being coached by Jon Feeley during his previous stints at the club, he's a great coach, innovative in his thinking.

Fingers crossed they can bring the success from County level into the club.

Fantastic news for the Green Machine. Rob Baldwin is certainly getting well stuck in to his new DOR role (as he always did get stuck in as a player) and I look forward to reading about some new signings? With Tom Davidson off to PGH next season, I wonder if we could perhaps lure Tincks back?? Also I hope that Jimmy Bullough is back fit next season after his injury challenges. Always committed and always very steady under a high ball and great to watch.

Bring it on!

...and to play at a higher level. Ionians were offering relatively big money. They will do well to hang on to the very desirable Tinks and his co-centre Lewis Minikin.

Posted By: Sid James

"Ionians were offering relatively big money"  Compared to who? Other Nat 1 Clubs? I don't think so.

I can assure you that Tinks didn't go to Hull Ionians for the money. He could have got more at most Nat 1 Clubs and certain Premier North Clubs.
I am not sure why he would have stayed at Wharfedale really? He went there on loan from Leeds so you can hardly say he was 'green through and through'. He obviously wanted to play in Nat 1. but he is proving a bit of a 'journey man' as I suspect he will move on again.
Players want to play at a certain level and, if they can get someone to pay them to do so, they are laughing. Who can blame them.
That's the trouble with relegation. As we are finding out this season and Wharfedale found out last season. Lets face it, if Wharfedale had not stayed in N2N they would be losing a few more.

We have retained Minikn, who is in great form following return from injury. He only played in the last quarter of the season and is in the England Counties Squad. Thankfully, we have also retained the backbone of last years squad.
N2N looks strong so no rash statements, promises or predictions from me. Just looking forward to it.

p.s. well done to Wharfedale on staying up. I would much rather travel to Threshfields than Luctonians - no offence.

Sid, When I say "big" it is all relative. I am surprised Lewis has not been bagged by a Champ club as he is quality. Well done on retaining the backbone of the squad - Sign of a club that players value. Tinks has certainly done the rounds.

Sid
For your information Tincks's first move was from Otliensians to Wharfedale where he proved to be a professional in the making. It was then that he moved from Wharfedale to Leeds with full encouragement from the Greens, then had a horrendous road accident which would have ended many careers and no doubt limited his. He has moved around since then and he certainly enjoys my goodwill for what it is worth.

If at the end of his travels he ever wants to settle down there will be many at the Avenue who will welcome him back.

In his first season for Dale Tinks was phenomenal, he came as a raw young lad from Otliensians and made the level jump seem ridiculously easy. It was no surprise Leeds picked him up and I was hopeful he would become a well established Premiership player. He has done amazingly well to get back playing and at such a good standard, I for one would welcome him back at the Dale as aplayer and as a genuinely good chap.

I do believe BRB is right when he says Rotherham is his most likely destination.

Tom Nutley joins the Leicester Lions Pride

We are delighted to announce the signing of Tom Nutley from Cambridge for the coming season. Tom was an ever present player for Cambridge last season and his physical presence as a strong ball carrying backrow will further strengthen the pack.

Ethan Godefroy becomes a "Lion"

Ethan Godefroy becomes the 2nd signing for coach Key. Ethan is a physical backrower who signs from near by club, Market Harborougth. Key is making a conscience effort to size up the pack for the new season campaign.

Ed Sumpter becomes the 3rd New Signing

A big athletic ball carrier is one of the attributes Ed brings to the side for season 2018/19. Ed also from neigh-borough club, Market Harborough, will join both Nutley & Godefroy in strengthening the pack.

Tom will do you proud.
Not quite as good as his twin, Ben.
He was a key player for us, until injury and then I believe he spent some time in Australia so has not played for Cambridge since Christmas.

A fair few frustrated and unhappy forwards who will be in the 2s - unless you're paying them all even if they're not in the 1st team. It's a difficult balancing act as I know from many years' experience.

As a mere supporter its great to see a bit more beef at Tigers. Injuries are a fact of life in N2 and you need a good sized squad. Players have got to be prepared to play 2ndXV rugby and wait their chance.
I don`t think anybody joins Tigers for the money. It`s a proper rugby club.
Well done to those in charge. Cant wait for the season to start.

Every club is different FC as you know !

The current lads are delighted with the new additions in the squad. Pre season is a clean slate for us and every shirt is up for grabs, all the lads are looking forward to the challenge.

You can do it 2 ways, neither is right or wrong.
1. Be a club and get strength in depth with competition for places.
2. Bring in DR players which can upset the apple cart far more in our view.

Either way is fine, but the lads reactions and the fact that we have NOT lost a single playing member from either squad this year should suggest a happy camp and we are doing things right....... how many clubs up and down NAT2 can boast not to lose a single player ?????? not many me thinks !!!!

No frustrations here only anticipation of the coming Pre season to own your shirt !!!

If you need help balancing you can come and see our model if you like ...... however do not ask me to show you any balancing at 6pm on a Saturday within the season LOL

Well your 2nd XV were top of the league last year so your lads obviously don't mind playing there which is terrific.

Tulip may just have worked this out. Last season, Tigers 2nd XV did indeed come top of the YRFU Championship South - playing the 2nd XVs of the likes of Wath (L8), Thornensians (L8) Barnsley (L8) and Sheffield Medics (L9). These are all very respectable clubs, but their 2nd XVs are hardly the sort of opposition to allow aspiring National League players to prove their worth. Next season, Tigers 2nd XV will be in the YRFU Merit Premiership and up against local rivals Sheffield who topped last season's Premiership table up to Christmas, ahead of Harrogate and Wharfedale, although Wharfedale went on to win the post Christmas Conference A. So maybe Tigers are just in the business of strengthening their 2nd XV for the tests that lie ahead...... On a more serious note, if Tigers are intent on taking 2nd XV rugby seriously and putting out a 2nd XV commensurate with their National League status, this is to be welcomed as the weakness of 2nd XV competitive rugby in Yorkshire and the north east is a regular complaint particularly when compared to the strength of the equivalent structure in the North West.

Hinckley Staghounds 78 Tigers 2nds 7 or Luctonians 2nds 37 Tigers 17 would indicate just what BE57 REF states re relative strength of Yorkshire 2nds league.
Hinckley have been Midlands Reserve league champions for the last three seasons and possibly need further challenges - ie 1st XV's of level 6 clubs within a reasonable travelling distance - they are good enough!
The latter being an important point to continue to keep the older players with families involved in competitive matches.
To go over or near 100 points on 5 occasions last season is no use to winners or certainly losers in mis matched leagues.

Whilst Wharfedale will be happy to talk to anyone of Ryan's calibre, there is no truth in this rumour. Several new players have turned out for a really positive start to pre-season training under the new coaching team of Jon Feeley, Jon Skurr and Chris Black, but Ryan is not one of them. Over 30 players were out on Thursday night and close on that number at 8.30 this morning so the mood in the camp is full of energy and enthusiasm. Wharfedale will be announcing the first of their new signings this week - but that announcement will be made first to sponsors and members.

Harry Wells joins the coaching team

Leicester Lions are pleased to announce “Tigers’ lock, Harry Wells is to join the coaching team for the coming season. Harry has come through the Tigers set up from the age of 14 and now wants to balance his playing career, by helping others develop as rugby players. With Tom Williams leaving at the end of last season to become a player/Coach for Blackheath, the opportunity arose for Harry to step into his boots. “Harry will bring a fresh approach to our coaching team whilst passing on his wealth of experience and keeping us all abreast of what life is like in the professional game”’ said Head Coach, Andy Key.

When asked what he thought he could bring to the Lions, Harry said, “I am looking forward to developing my own coaching style, but more importantly passing on what I have learnt as a player whilst at the Tigers. I know the players, coaching team and club were disappointed in where they finished in the league last season and nothing would please me more if I can help in supporting the clubs ambitions of finishing in the top half this season. It is very fresh in my mind what I have had to do to achieve my current success as a player. So I am looking to support the players both individually and collectively to ensure we can all achieve our ambitions for the coming season.”

Harry will have his first outing with the new look squad as the ‘Lions’ are back for pre-season training starting on Tuesday 3rd July.

2 very strong signings for the Dale!! Looking forward to seeing the boys in action.
Sowrey was a revelation when he first joined from Harrogate and can only be better after a stint in the Premiership.

Chris Walker was one of Leeds Carnegies top performer for years a class act at 7.Should make a great back row with Burridge and Tyson, may be Baldwin as well?

So just the five players so far moving from Ionians to Rotherham or is there more?

Messrs Stout, Dennis, Thomson, Cotterill and one other that is yet to be announced?

You missed Humberstone, Zac Poole who I think technically was an I's player on loan to Hull and one of the other centres

Yes, Rotherham have picked up a number of our squad from last year. Cannot blame the Lads wanting to play in Nat 1. They know where we are if it doesn't go to plan.
However, Rotherham should be careful what they announce.
One of those players is contracted/signed on to Hull Ionians for next season and he has not been released.
I am sure that we will investigate this and we may have to take it further.

Openthegate,

You are correct about Zac Poole. Hull had him on loan from Ionians and he was going to sign for Hull before the Rotherham offer came along.  We will miss him but wish him well with the Titans, personally I think he has a great future in the game.

Sid - as a matter of interest does Hull I's stand in the way of players who wish to play at a higher level? I thought most clubs were happy to let players go if they were going to play at a higher standard.

Sure Roth might be naughty by announcing it before the player was released but taking it "further" - what does that mean?

It means that if the player has actually signed a contract, it means something.  Presumably if he's signed an RFU approved contract and it's been registered with Twickenham(which is what should happen), he's  being paid, and a contract works both ways. A contract is a a legally binding document which actually protects both parties. If this is the case and Ionians contact the RFU, they'll back them totally, and the player will have to honour that contract unless Ionians decide to release him (or there's a release clause in it).  If a player signs a contract, he must have been aware of the implications, just like in any job. However if he hasn't signed an RFU approved contract, he can go wherever he wants.

Also note Regulation 7

Quote
7.1
Approaches to Players
No Club or Constituent Body may directly or indirectly, approach (or accept
an approach by or on behalf of) any Player who is under Contract with a
Club, Constituent Body or Union to induce or attempt to induce such
Player to leave that Club, Constituent Body or Union unless such approach
or inducement is made with the written consent of that Club, Constituent
Body or Union, or is made in the final six months of the term of that Player’s
Contract. Any Club or Constituent Body wishing to make such an approach
may contact the RFU for details of when a particular Player’s Contract is due
to expire.
