Richmond third game is a interesting one. As the only date they are not playing, the opposition are.

Nottingham? Isn't the early March slot a free one for both?

It would be quite surprising if the shutters were pulled down on 21/22 season before the end of March, leading to a five-and-a-half-month off-season...

How can any club survive long term on 10 match days a season?
End of the month Bedford are at home. As it stands the local Southern League football club could be in a top of the table clash at home.
The way the Championship is being run, I can see local newspapers giving the football more coverage.
The best thing in Bedford with no clue what happens in April is our neighbours Bedford Ath have two home fixtures after the Blues league campaign ends.

Title decider maybe - promotion decider not - Pirates haven't applied to have their ground and facilities assessed so can't go up. Ealing might not meet the criteria

It could still be the promotion decider if it determines if Ealing are above Doncaster.

True - if both Ealing and Donny pass the grounds test. Hypothetically could the 3rd placed be promoted assuming they were the only one that met the criteria?

Yes, it could be the title decider. By my maths, based on games between now and then: - If Pirates (38 pts) win all their (9) games with BPs, they'd be on 83 pts + 17 wins ahead of the decider
- If Ealing (46) do the same (8 games), they'd be on 86pts + 17 wins going into the decider
- That would mean Pirates would take the title with any win in the decider, except 2-4
In the above scenario (which is offered tongue-in-cheek as an unlikely outcome), the title would be out of reach of Donny, who would have been defeated by both their top-three rivals (and in any case only have 7 games left...)
Now I just need to do the maths for a scenario in which Jersey win their last 8 games with BPs

Pirates have to go away to Ealing and in form Donny (very impressive result in Jersey) so that's a very tough ask. There's also trips to Bedford and Richmond. Goldington Road is always a challenge. The RAG is a proper bogey ground for us - to be honest we were lucky to beat LS on our last trip. Obviously nothing is impossible, but that would be a heck of an achievement if we managed to win all those games.

Predictions this weekend: Friday 19.45 Notts 1-4 Jersey Usually close matches but hoping for an away win by 3-6 points
Saturday 2pm Mond 2-2 Pirates More likely 4-1 either way but I will punt for a draw Saturday 2.30pm Donny 5-0 Blues On current form Donny go nap Saturday 2.30pm Pury 1-4 Ealing This could be a huge banana skin but I think Ealing will win by 3-6 points

I notice that you have your obligatory draw in there CC.
Personally, I think that the games will be a little more clear cut… although I have been wrong in the past….. often!!
Nottingham 0-5 Jersey … A poor 1st half against Mond, but a much better 2nd half will give the Reds something to build on and if they get into their flow they will be hard to stop. Richmond 1-5 Pirates … The scoreline in Jersey was very harsh on Richmond and totally deserved at least a LBP from the encounter. They will be tough to beat at home, but there is steel in this Pirates outfit. I would love to see a home win, but head says otherwise. Doncaster 5-0 Bedford … What on earth has happened to Bedford recently? Their form has totally crumbled and a trip to fortress Castle Park is a tough prospect for them. A great wi. If they can muster it, but can’t see anything other than a solid home win. Hartpury 1-5 Ealing … CC may be right, this could be a really tough game for Ealing. Hartpury are notoriously unpredictable, so it could be an intriguing game. Have to go with promotion favorites though.

Hmm, while that is true, hypothetically of course, the last time a team that didn't finish top of the league was promoted into the Premiership it ended rather badly, and I'd hate for that to happen again, to anyone.

I think there is a requirement that, first and foremost, the team to be considered for promotion must have won the Championship that season.

Nottingham 4 - 1 Jersey Friday night blues for the reds (perhaps) Richmond 1-5 Pirates (pirates to bag the booty) Doncaster 5 - 1 Bedford if we sort our nonsense out from last weekend but the blues will make us work hard Hartpury 1-5 Ealing Hartpury in a rich (ish) vein of form could give Ealing a good run
------------- Onward and Upwards C'mon Donny!

Predictions: Nottingham 4 v 1 Jersey - Nottingham always give a good account of themselves at home, even against the best sides. I think they can sneak this. Richmond 4 v 1 Cornish Pirates - Just wonder if Richmond could throw a spanner in the works here. Pirates don’t have a great record at the RAG. The home team are in good form at the moment. Could be a real test for CP this one. Doncaster 4 v 1 Bedford - Blues have been shocking in the last few weeks against teams you would expect them to beat which means lo and behold they’ll turn up this week won’t they?, typical. Home win but a lot tighter than current form would suggest. Hartpury 4 v 1 Ealing - I can see Ealing being given a real scrap here, if Hartpury turn up I think we could see the title race blown wide open. This fixture does have a “banana-skin” feel to it if ever there was one.
Think there could be a few surprises this weekend. Just shows how unpredictable the league is this year.

Nottingham 1 - 5 Jersey - When it is part time vs. full time, I'm almost always going to come down on the side of the fulltimers, even if they are playing away. Richmond 1 - 4 Cornish Pirates - Richmond capable of turning over anyone at the RAG, with the evergreen Mark Bright at the helm I expect them to keep this close, but the logic above still holds. Doncaster 5 - 0 Bedford - See above, and Bedford has been in very poor form of late. Hartpury 1 - 5 Ealing - Agree that this game has 'banana skin' written all over it. I feel much better with Hartpury NOT having Nathan Hughes, but given that this is a Six Nations weekend, there could be less DRs available than usual, so I think that Ealing will triumph in the end.

As Ampthill have a week off I can make all predictions with my head, not my heart, so here goes.
Nottingham 1-4 Jersey. Not a clue really as this is a potential banana skin for the away team. Richmond 1-4 Cornish Pirates. See note above. The same applies. Doncaster 5-0 Bedford. Doncaster will be looking to put on a better display than last Saturday for their fans and Bedford are falling apart. Hartpury 1-5 Ealing. Provided the weather is dry this could be a try fest, but Ealing should have the ability to win by more than 7 points.
Basically, this week’s fixtures are all banana skins and I fear for my current third position in the prediction table.

Nottingham 1-4 Jersey - Never any easy place to visit . . . but Jersey gaining momentum Richmond 4-1 Pirates - Just a feeling!!! Doncaster 5- 0 Bedford - Bedford like a box of chocolates Hartpury 1-5 Ealing - very tempted to award win to Pury but !!!
Also hearing all sorts of great rumours about next years Championship structure, you would have thought they would have sorted it my now!!! Come on RFU you have one job!!! One rumour is Academy sides either entering or being involved in a Cup Competition!!!! But LS definitely staying.

Nottingham 0-5 Jersey … An unexciting match Richmond 1-4 Pirates … Could be a slogathon if weather is poor
Doncaster 5-0 Bedford … Donny keep control for long periods and frustrate Bedford into errors
Hartpury 1-5 Ealing … Hartpury to keep going for 80 mins and get TBP

Ealing team away to Hartpury: Sad to Alun Walker changed out due to injury, and still prefer Will Davis at prop, but otherwise a fine Ealing side, who should win. Happy to see Burns on the bench, was worried after he limped off against Coventry.
1. Dylan Smith 2. Shaun Malton 3. Lewis Thiede 4. Bobby De Wee 5. Simon Linsell 6. Max Northcote-Green 7. Simon Uzokwe 8. Rayn Smid 9. Craig Hampson 10. Craig Willis 11. Angus Kernohan 12. Pat Howard 13. Max Bodilly 14. Cian Kelleher 15. David Johnston
Replacements
16. Jan-Henning Campher 17. Will Davis 18. George Davis 19. James Cannon 20. Harry Casson 21. Jordan Burns 22. Steven Shingler 23. Len Massyn

in the prediction league Richmond v Pirates seems to be the most difficult to predict so an extra 5 points for those who get exactly right

It was apparently a last minute thing and Ealing have saved the day. From the Blues website.
Following further injuries and COVID-19 cases this week, Blues would like to thank Ealing Trailfinders for allowing Reuben Bird-Tulloch to re-join the club on a short-term loan basis, acting swiftly after such short notice.

Well played lads! | Fully agree its too easy to pick bits out of a performance but far better to stay positive. A lot of loyal squad players got great game time which they fully deserve and 5 league points away from home is always an achievement. Top of the league may well not last beyond the end of today but Jersey have progressed a long way since they got their first Championship point away at Mighty Roth. The 'unexciting' comment about Nottingham v Reds was made 10 hrs before KO! Am amazing game, I suppose that even as the f/t side it wasn't surprising that visitors ran out of steam a bit after 6-day turn-round, dawn start to catch flight + delay to KO, and at 31-34 with 3/4 mins to play there was a chance for an amazing win for Notts. 31-41 the same scoreline as Reds' 'Great Escape' win at Bedford in 2014

Donny should have got the BP win. It might just be me but I thought Bedford were very poor. Their defence was the only positive from their performance, without some good scramble defence the Knights could have easily scored 40-50 points. Bedford offered virtually nothing in attack and were camped in their half for most of the game. I’ve rarely seen a Blues team look so toothless in attack. On the rare occasions they did string some good play together they knocked on. Such a contrast to the team that should have beaten us at Castle Park last season.

Could this poor performance be down to a lack of a settled team, they lost at least one of saints boys, Litchfield aged in the u20s

"Could this poor performance be down to a lack of a settled team, they lost at least one of saints boys, Litchfield aged in the u20s" I put this very point on our local forum Knights Boy. I believe that part of Bedford's problems lie in the fact we are making 5-7 changes every week (can't all be for injury or illness?) seemingly to accommodate Saints recalling players - Litchfield, Grayson, Tupai, Iyogun, etc.

Do we do ourselves any favours not running a Wanderers side anymore? We have a squad and it seems rotate players, but surely players sometimes need games not days off shopping.
Ampthill, Bedford Ath, Swifts all run second teams. (Or more) Queens don’t seem to this year. Biggleswade appear to be running three teams.

I would love to see a championship 2nd XV competition as such, perhaps "The Championship Shield" having the likes of Richmond, Ampthill, Jersey and however else at L2 would like to join competing. When part/time i believe running a 2nd XV is really a very good idea.

Nice idea but how on earth do you fund all that? Players would still have to contracted and the travelling costs would be huge - if you are advocating the same teams competing then whatever its costing you now x 2!

Would it be a league? To cut travel, would you invite National 1 or Premiership clubs? Using a regional league system?

Ampthill, Richmond and Jersey already have teams in the Raging Bull Shield which is a well run and well established competition.

You could have 4 groups, North, Midlands, South East, Sout West - each ten plays each other home and away with the top 2 of each group progressing to a knockout stage.
The groups could have between 6 and 8 teams in each - entrants could come from Premiership, Championship and possibly N1 - I am assuming some clubs wouldn't enter so N1 clubs would be needed.

The league is full of mismatches, Wimbledon 2nd XV should not be playing Richmond 2nd XV. I agree the league is run well, but you cannot have a National 3 2nd XV play a Championship 2nd XV or even 3rd XV.

So the away trips to Jersey currently happen already as mentioned in the Raging Bull Shield. Richmond, Ampthill & Jersey all play each other with the same travel costs. Potentially we can create double headers where 1st and 2nd XV's play each other on the same day.

I just think potentially you would be better with a smaller competition that provides good competition for these squads wider playing group, but dosen't put too much pressure on them should injuries or any other issues arise.

The Raging Bull Shield works pretty well & runs with a bit more flexibility than RFU leagues, I'm not sure a dedicated 2nd XV league would be any better, trying to shoe-horn a diverse collection of clubs into a set format.
Jersey made the error of beating Richmond Saxons 25-21 at home in October... setting up a trip to the RAG last w/e, when the Reds lost 75-12 to the Vikings. But we don't tend to have many such mismatches...

A saxons team, that should really have been called a Club XV!. As players were drawn from across all the club's teams. Their backline consisted of 5 forwards and 2 backs by the end of it. How many teams have come over this season to play Athletic?

It's been tricky this season, with various Covid measures in place at the border until earlier this month. They didn't stop teams coming, but presented extra challenges in terms of people being vaccinated, tested on arrival etc - a lot of people of rugby-playing age weren't double-jabbed until late 2021, by which point we had the Omicron wave rearing up. It should get easier now, with several clubs lined up for trips during March and April...

The last round of Championship matches pushed into first weekend of April due to CoVid delays. The Cup starts April 9th.
Depending who you are season ends weekend April 2nd or sometime in May.

I'm really confused as I saw this the other day, yet Blues tweeted last night that our final game away at Scottish is "rearranged" to March 19th????
