Nottingham have announced today that as from next season they will be going semi-professional with training outside of normal working hours. The team get their March wages in full but April & May will be by way of furlough. I'm absolutely gutted as there are some very gifted young lads at the club, young lads that will no doubt be looking to move in the hope of fulltime rugby.

First Sweeney, then Covid-19, I really hope bad luck doesn't come in 3's!

Think a number of other clubs will follow suit which may leave the RFU having to re-arrange the league structure as it would be a waste of time having a number of very powerful teams playing part timers. Saracens vs part time Nottingham for example it would be 100 points plus ??

JD whilst Saracens v anyone will be a challenge (although not sure how often all their stars will play), non full time teams like Ampthill (currently 5th)and Hartpury have beaten a number of full time teams this current season in the Championship. I remember reading that, besides Bristol and London Irish, Richmond beat all other teams during their three years at level 2. Challenge for Nottingham will be finding jobs locally for their players when the rugby money will not be enough to pay the rent.

No offence intended but slightly different calibre of player playing at Saracens than the other full-time clubs eg Jersey or Doncaster

Just picked up the following statement

There may be another to follow re part time status

Some players may find they ar3 better off part time. I know there are plenty who have moved from L2 to L3 and swapped and are financially better off

If you can get a job, unfortunately there are probably few opportunities at present.

Interesting article by an ex-pro, forgot his name. Played for Nottingham for 3 seasons. And he said playing part-time he made more money from rugby than he did being a full-timer.
It seems that the clubs that were barely surviving as full-time outfits - LS & Nottingham etc, are the ones whose business models seem to have collapsed almost instantly when the RFU cut funding - for what looks like £130k for next season atm.
Shows to me, that they really should've been semi-pro outfits from the outset.

Not completing the season will have made the losses much larger, even with Government support.

Nottingham Rugby statement on Coronavirus (Covid-19)
Nottingham Rugby can today confirm that we have furloughed all our players and majority of other staff as a result of the Coronavirus outbreak. We can also confirm that we have temporarily closed our Lady Bay facility, with those staff remaining on working contracts being based at home.
Under the government’s recent Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, and with the RFU announcement that our season is now over, instead of making our players, coaches and support staff redundant, we have put the squad on ‘furlough leave’. This scheme enables us to continue to pay our players and we are appreciative of the Government’s support to enable us to do so.
We expect this to take effect until the end of May 2020, but we will review in line with government announcements.
These are unprecedented times for everyone concerned and we would like to thank our players, coaches, staff, supporters, sponsors and everyone else associated with Nottingham Rugby.
With regards next season, as I am sure you will expect, due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation and lack of confirmation around Championship funding from the RFU, there is a fair amount of uncertainty around the future.
However, the directors of Nottingham Rugby, would like to reassure everyone that our strategy for the club remains the same. We want to be playing competitive Championship rugby, whilst continuing to develop The Bay as a premium Community Sports facility, capable of hosting first class rugby and events.
We appreciate that there is a lot of uncertainty at the moment, both at Nottingham Rugby, but also across every aspect of society. Please continue to look after yourselves and your families and please do contact us if you have any questions.

This is the only statement I can find on Nottinghams website will someone please post the statement about going part- time

Nottingham updated squad shows 28 players including the six loanees from Tigers.

Odd to only have 2 locks and one fly half but 7 back rowers...

Looks a sensible size for the number of games ahead with no relegation.

How big are other clubs squads?

Cov, 32, and likewise quite a few who are listed as back row.

So no relegation from the Championship is confirmed-certainly sensible given no Nat One happening this season and the Scots not playing. Will the Scots be penalised for not playing as I assume they have already received money, like the rest of the Champ clubs, from the RFU for this season

I wouldn't be surprised if they have to pay the money back as they are not playing.

Blues are 31 at the moment with 1 proper fly half as Bell has left before playing.

Tupai could cover, or we could get creative an stick a winger there like Niko or Lane. I remember a number of years ago (ND1 days probably) when we had players like Hinton and Harris both were running full backs that also played played fly half, centre and wing, it meant we had effectively 4/5 players who were as fast as wingers and we were very attack minded with a lot of pace.

Against a team like Saracens I would be tempted to put someone like Temm (mobile and fast No. 8) at fly half or inside centre for his defence and get an extra back row on the pitch for turnovers/slowing up their ball.

I think all teams will use the Ealing and Saracens games as training and will rotate.  Leave the two of them to it.

Woody 27 is quite a small number given a match day squad of 23 required. Unless 3 of the spare 4 players are front row they will not be able to put out a squad for a match if they have a front row injury.  Are there others that can be called upon or will they have to dual register?

Posted By: Woody
Date Posted: 16 Feb 2021 at 13:17
I expect we will look to Wasps or Nottingham Trent University in that case.
Could easily see Heffernan being loaned back to us though.

I think it is a sensible number considering we are not playing for anything this season. Not going to be top two and there is no relegation so why bother?

I think Scottish have the right idea myself. Why expose the club financially for nothing?

Think it’s 28 with Josh McNulty. I thought the general idea this season was that we utilized NTU more?

I struggle to understand this attitude and can not believe for one moment any player in the Bedford Blues squad and including the Saints players or any the coaching staff would agree with you. Several times on here Bedford `supporters` have stated ` nothing to play for` ` why bother` . I believe you do your own team a massive injustice to assume that they will concede before stepping on to the pitch.

Rugby teams pull off the most astounding victories against , on paper and form better teams and I believe that is one of the main reasons we love our sport. Some of us travel the length and breadth of the country to watch our team win or lose.

I fully agree with this although sadly I know it happens and its particularly harsh on travelling supporters who follow their team in the hope of seeing them beat the top team. I've been lucky enough to see Jersey beat Bris away in the year they won promotion but I also traveled up to Kingston Park to see them lose a cracking match against Falcons when Jersey fielded a team without Guy Thompson (surely one of the best players to ever wear a Jersey Red Shirt). I think GT played in every match that season - except the games against Falcons. Sarries and Ealing are IMO the outstanding clubs this season but they should be the fixtures every other team should field their best team and bust a gut to win.

I've wondered a few times if Ealing has suffered a bit in terms of attendance because visiting fans see the result as a foregone conclusion (at least over the past 3-4 seasons). For example, the London Scottish and Richmond games have not been especially well attended even though it is an easy 15-20 minute drive.

Posted By: castleparknight

There are a lot of Championship clubs that don't have travelling support of any great numbers - not sure if this is the case with Richmond and Scottish (although I know we have welcomed supporters from both clubs at Donny - those could easily have been exiles). I just enjoy the game too much, so if the one who must be obeyed has not scheduled something on an away day I will try my hardest to go irrespective of the possible outcome.

It would have been good to see what crowds Sarries would have generated at away games - but as there will only be a few games where this is possible we won't really know unless they are beaten to the post and spend another season languishing in the Championship. But if that happens Donny will be in the premiership so we won't know for another year :-)  .

So i thought I had a full list of all the players signed up or loan to Nottingham this season 41 of them.

However the team for Sunday has three new names I must have missed. Can anyone enlighten me? They are not on the website or in any announcements as far as I can see...

Wing - Luke Mehson
Centre - Will Simmonds
Full Back - Ed Coulson

Thanks

Ed coulson had been at Bedford for a couple of years. The ultimate utility player having played every position between 10-15 and had also played minutes at scrum half and even flanker in his time here! Was forced to play a lot at fly half due to injuries so we maybe didn’t see the best of him, but I think full back is his best position. Played for Ampthill in pre season so I’d assumed he’d signed for them
