Whereas I agree more coverage would be ideal this is actually just another piece wanting more investment. How many times have we seen the Premiership saying we need to "grow the game" to survive instead of accepting they need to cut their cloth to have a long-term future?

Time for the Premiership and (some of) the Championship to do something themselves to sort out their parlous financial situations and not to sit back and rely on others.

Great that within a few weeks of this NY resolution opinion piece that weekly highlights package was developed and now, as the league resumes & moves towards conclusion, has a regular 'launch' slot of 7pm each Wednesday. A real +ve IMHO

Found on the Blues mic, when he is not commentating for BT Sport and will always champion the Championship.

I agree Islander. Good coverage, professionally put together… it’s a start, but they need to persuade Sky Sports to run that as a 10/15 minute. bite size slot.

That really is great coverage once again.   Really positive initiative.

But we really need coverage on TV, not just a podcast that only that about 2,000 people - probably all already fans - watch.

The National League Review Show gets that many views.

We need an hour a week on BBC, ITV or Channel 4, possibly covering Championship and National leagues.
Just having the results read out on Radio 2 would be something.

It is really good, and brings the Championship up to the level and standard of coverage that levels 3 and 4 have had for 2 seasons now. A bigger question is probably why level 2 took so long to get its act together in this small way.... Trickle up effect? Wink

Don't think (m)any people are saying this is an ideal situation CQ, just that it's a whole heap better than what Champ formerly had, movement in the right direction.

It's not a podcast and anyone with access to the web can watch it - there've been 13k views so far since it went up at 7pm. The Nat Lg Show broke new ground - great initiative and served as a spark (along with articles like Sam's and various people within the league shouting about the need) to actually get something off the ground.

Yes some national TV coverage would be good, the idea to sell the Champ rights to the BBC for £1 to show games online was one I liked, but there'd still be logistical/funding hurdles I expect.

Sports results on Radio 2 - wow, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0q3IIwoIl4Q" rel="nofollow - there's a throwback!

RL has had some success in getting the BBC to show early/amateur rounds of the Challenge Cup on red button/iPlayer - but (as someone that occasionally watches it) they don't get much of an audience and it is exactly as poor for everyone other than the committed hardcore fan as people have always said it would be on here - fixed camera angles, no atmosphere etc.

Where the RFL have done something interesting is the OurLeague app - which is a clearing house for information on everything SuperLeague down, and also includes visual content and match streaming from below SuperLeague.

There really ought to be an RU version of it, because OurLeague is an absolute showcase for what can be done. Given the RFL's chronic lack of cash (as ever) it's actually embarrassing that they do it and we don't.

It's free to download, and I would encourage everyone on here to download it and have a look - not because I want you all to watch RL, but just to see what the 21st century looks like!

The Championship would get better coverage if we built into the program more features which the public and TV companies want to see. Some features are obvious like play-offs for promotion and relegation but clubs could also fix kickoff times to suit broadcasters. Soccer has done this for years and they get loads of coverage and TV funding. This season the quality of rugby in the Championship has been wonderful to watch if the top 3 or 4 were involved in playoffs ideally with the bottom team in the premiership it would surely attract a broadcaster to cover it if the games were scheduled to suit them.

Dont kick it. Pick it up and GO FORWARD.

Again, RL actually tried this with what they called the middle 8s - bottom 4 in super league and top 4 in the Championship going into a mini league at the back end of the season. Unfortunately they dropped it - why? Because it was much more interesting for the viewing public than the super league title playoffs at the same time! It culminated I think with more column inches on the 'Million Pound game' to sort out promotion/relegation at the bottom than on the SL Grand Final....

I assume the Prem's broadcast people will have observed and taken notes - can't have the 'product' being devalued by the upstarts can we?

It's good until right at the end - 28 years of a professional top tier 'and if we get this right everyone below will benefit' and we're now supposed to swallow 'if we sort out the Championship everyone else below will benefit'?

I love his idea that people below the Championship will be saying 'what about us?'

Too right.

We can all see what the problems are in rugby, the need for a whole-game solution to the pyramid (in terms of spectators, player numbers, club sustainability, and wider public awareness continues to be the large, neon, elephant in the room. Unaddressed since the game went pro, and apparently now on a quest to close the gap between levels 1 and 2 by widening it between 2 and 3 - and if that's not going to be consequence (intended or otherwise) of raising the profile of the Championship, then I'm sure the other 2000 clubs in the country will be all ears. But not if the answer involves any form of trickle down....

People knock the credibility and integrity of the RFU and the Premiership clubs but then again and again 'we need to promote the Championship' gets trotted out, as though some gelt being shovelled into the mouths of the Championship clubs does anything other than slightly expand the tiny number of haves and let the have-nots go hang.

Listening to BBC 3CR.

Morning news.
Telling us in Rugbys Championship Bedford won last night, Ampthill playing today.
Next story
In Rugby Union England play Ireland.

If you didn’t know better, it sounded like they were talking two different sports.

Be interesting this next two Tuesdays, no EFL matches if the Sports show covers local rugby.
1. The proposal for Championship to reduce in size and be Premiership 2
2. Wasps being parachuted into Championship
3. End of Regional/County League matches and the Pizza Cups, Trophies etc

Or it will be music, talking to a manager/player/reporter of the five EFL teams
A local sports person in Golf/Tennis
Something about Motor Sports

And nothing about rugby.

The older I get, the more the RFU leave me confused.
