Has anyone considered starting a Championship podcast? It’s certainly something I would listen to and I’d be happy to contribute. With all the discussions in the press regarding the future of the Championship, the voice of the fans goes unheard.

I’m not a media person though so have no experience in this area. There must be some players or ex players who would be willing to contribute. What sort of numbers would be needed to make it viable?

It would be good to interview players , coaches and support staff from all clubs . They all seem trained in presenting to the camera and never seem to say anything out of turn. The clubs would have to submit each interview to the blog but I believe it takes some considerable input .

I think it would be good. There are some decent rugby podcasts out there - The Ruck by The Times is my choice - and having a dedicated focus on this division would be really good. Hopefully this may be picked up as we move forward...

Could be a good selling point for future negotiations on Sponsorship and TV coverage of the Championship.

Doncaster fans (and rugby fans in general!) might be interested to hear from Clive Griffiths on the latest London Welsh podcast:
http://www.londonwelshrfc.com/news/london-welsh-podcast-clive-griffiths-2595858.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.londonwelshrfc.com/news/london-welsh-podcast-clive-griffiths-2595858.html

He talks about growing up in Wales, playing for Llanelli and Wales, going north, and the influence of some of the greats in rugby league on his coaching career.  There's obviously a big focus on his time with London Welsh, but he also talks about his experiences at Donny and gives his thoughts on the Championship and professional rugby in England, as well as the tragic death of Ian Williams.

This week's guest (podcast out later today) is another man with links to both clubs - Ed Jackson.

I co-host a podcast called Boots2Suits which is available on all platforms. Myself and the host discuss all life outside of the premiership but more importantly life after sport and the difficult transition from boots2suits highlighting how 98 percent of professional players are left in the dark when their playing days are over.

We have managed to speak to some unbelievable characters in our first season of episodes who have years of experience in the champ including Dan Temm, Grayson Hart, Mark Tampin, Chris Walker and Ben Mercer. (Would recommend listening to the Dan Temm or Mark Tampin episodes first as they’re our most downloaded episodes)

We have also managed to speak to some high profile names in Jerome Kaino, Topsy Ojo and Dom Waldouck.

Let me know if you manage to have a listen with any feedback you have.

Hope everyone is well
Ben Fairclough (ex Otley player)

I think that the idea of  a Championship only podcast would be pretty niche, though I personally would definitely listen. I was wondering which sources of media people use for the Championship?
My top 3 are:
1. The Rugby Paper - gives a lot of time to the Championship, and usually backs it against PRL/RFU. At least a few articles/mentions each week, and did great team overviews last year of many Champ teams.
2. Talking Rugby Union - I've found some great long form pieces on there. There was a good one last year on Andrew Durutalo leaving Ealing to go back to the US and start his non-Rugby life. They also have done a lot of coverage this year, with Guy Thompson coming in as a columnist.
3. Rugby World magazine - A little coverage now and again. They did a nice Championship preview recently.

Talking Rugby Union did a podcast with about 35 minutes of discussion on the Championship  including Ampthill's Charlie Beckett. Very good listen.

This is a great initiative.

I listened to the whole podcast ( very long ) and found it very interesting. The dedication and committment was obvious and real insight into what it takes to be competitive in the Championship.
There are some real characters within Championship both players , coaching  and backroom staff I am looking forward to the next installment.
I would like to see Mark Bright interviewed and some of the players who have come through the Championship to the Premiership. I wonder how 'safe' they will play with both subject and guests. Dan Temn was very vocal about his treatment by Yorkshire Carnegie. Will they discuss racism, Saracens forced demotion to the Championship and cheating the current system. low wages for young players who are playing against an opposite number earning five times the amount they are earning.

We will see.

Really enjoyed episode 2 of the Championship Clubs Podcast, especially enlightening was Pete Lydon’s insight and comparison of the Champ and ProD2.

A great listen. I would love to see a competition against the ProD2 as Lydon suggested.

Given that there are only two sides (for the time being) with a budget to compete with ProD2, I can't see it happening.

What was enlightening for me was that Lydon thought the gap wasn’t as great as I’d previously assumed. Apparently the pace and skills of the backs are greater in the Champ. Up front the ProD2 has the edge.

I’d imagine any competition between the two leagues could garner a reasonable tv deal...

Having watched level two (with a break or three) since1988, I'm afraid I'm doused in pessimism.
Probably just me though...

Iron sharpens iron. Japan played around a dozen meaningful tests in the run up to the 2019 world cup, getting games against a higher level of competition than usual. This meant that when it was time to perform, they were able to reach the knock out stages.

I think if Championship teams are given the opportunity to play against tougher challenges, some of the teams will rise to it, and they'll be more prepared for future challenges.

Jersey played RC Vannes (currently 2nd in ProD2) a couple of years back in two pre-saeson friendlies home and away.  Two very entertaining games with a victory for Vannes in France and Jersey in the home leg.  Would love to see that repeated.

Episode 3 up, featuring Ali Price (Bedford) and Tomas Francis (Donny and Scottish). Once again, an interesting listen. Ali Price was saying that the Scottish 2nd tier is roughly mid-Championship level. Not sure, but without the B&I I guess we'll never know.

Hi Greg

I just recall the Scots teams being weaker as a general rule of thumb back in the day of the B&I cup, I thought Ali was being kind. It may be different now though, but this may be because of a lot more loannees from the Pro 14 clubs.....

Have to confess to being part of the Championship Clubs Podcast team, as a huge supporter of Championship rugby it was fantastic to hear Tom Youngs speak with such passion & praise for the division.

Listen/watch to the last episode, which also includes Jersey Reds hooker George Edgson, in various formats via the link -  http://redirect.viglink.com/?key=71fe2139a887ad501313cd8cce3053c5&subId=5652634&u=https%3A//linktr.ee/Champclubspod" rel="nofollow - linktr.ee/Champclubspod

I enjoyed both episodes I have listened to, I found myself agreeing with Ben and George about the condescending attitude towards champ clubs from a section of prem club supporters. Hopefully the podcast, and the live streaming will go some way to showing the rest of the rugby world, what a great competition it is.

Latest pod with Phil Nilsen was interesting, especially as he is done with rugby and was able to let loose a bit. My only suggestion would be to set up a consistent date and time to drop the pod. I listen to about 10 pods regularly, and that is key to holding an audience - also, suggest that you make it drop on a Friday morning so that people can take it in on their commute, especially with a lot of Friday games coming up.

Thankfully for my sanity, I've been able to leave my house and go to an actual office for nearly a month now. I get to speak to adults, don't have to work at my kitchen table, and have an actual break between home and work, which is filled by time on a train. Amazing.

Tom Youngs was a brilliant guest and so full of praise for the Championship and the important role it plays in developing players for step up to the Premiership.
He also stated that all premiership clubs are constantly looking for players in the Championship.
I believe Ealing Trailfinders will lose even more players to the premiership.

Appreciate the feedback - going to do our best to publish over night on Thursday so that people can listen first thing on a Friday morning. There are a couple of things that sometimes fall out of our control but this week's episode with Ben Mercer is now live & a decent listen (in my biased opinion) Listen here -  https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/championship-clubs-podcast/id1560187927#episodeGuid=champrugbypod.podbean.com%2F5ba96e7c-513c-3f5a-a2ea-832661bad503" rel="nofollow - https://apple.co/3hDafKj

These are coming out on a regular basis, Friday 900 nowadays. Today's was Ealing DoR Ben Ward. One very interesting thing that he said was that he's had assurances that ringfencing won't occur at the end of this season. Plenty more nuggets in there as well.

Class interview with Glenn Delaney in the most recent one of these. Really interesting to hear his perspective on how the Championship has evolved - ebbed and flowed - over the last 10 years or so.
And from his stories on the management of the Nottingham dressing room, I would predict Craig Hammond having a positive benefit to the teams performance over the next few years.

Just wanted to call out that this week's podcast with Bobby DeWee was a good laugh, while the previous one following the "no promotion" fiasco was pure gold. Good to see them out regularly again.
