Well all roads lead to Caldy this weekend, in what really is a fitting end to the  National 1 season.

Brief recap on last weekend, shows max points for the top 2. Park get the show back on the road with the defeat of Cambridge. At the bottom Leeds pick up max points against the “Albi 17” to give them a massive lifeline. But this week, we just need to look at the top, although there will be many eyes from South East London on the Darlington result this Friday as Leeds win would shunt Club into the bottom two! Come Saturday as said, all roads and eye's lead to The Wirral with Big Eddie at the bar when those shutters go up at 12.00!

So let's wind the clock back and look at the history of the Caldy v Sale fixture.

Without going back too much in time and with the greatest respect to every other fixture played, there is one thats been played to date, that I would say was the most important and sticks out, that being on Saturday 8th April 2017.

National 2 North 2016/17 season

3 games to go, Caldy and Sale battling it out at the top of National 2 North all season.

Whoever won that game was going to win that league with 2 games to go after this fixture.Caldy (like now in many ways) had not lost since the opening fixture of the season and were on a great run.

Caldy won 28-26 in a thriller, having been 6-23 down at half time, they did outscore Sale 3 tries to 2, but the turn around was started after halftime with a try that was world class by Nick Royal, who was the leagues top try scorer at the time and it was then followed with a yellow card also at the start of the second half to Sales Chris Johnson who had pulled all the strings in the first 40 and driven his side into the lead, both these Id suggest were the major turning points. The Wirral went mad, it was all about the result, there were still 2 games to go, but for the first time in that season the teams were split as all Caldy needed were 2 more wins and history will show this was never in question.

For 9 months these two had gone head to head at the top of National 2 North, the game was, like this one will be we hope, a fitting climax to the battle for the title.

Caldy of course gained promotion leaving Sale to go into the play off ( at home as they had a better league record) against OE’s who came away from Heywood Road with a win meaning Sale were left to fight another season in National 2 North, they made no mistake the year after.

That to date I would say was the most important game played between these two, that was before this weekend, does history repeat itself?

In the last 4 weeks you have to hand to to Sale and the never say die attitude. Coming from Manchester they are well use to "Fergie time" and have made use of the 81st 82nd and even 83rd minute in the last few games. They have come from a long way back in games against Rosslyn Pk, Rams and last week against Blackheath to name but 3. Caldy have just gone about their business. A massive result at Park has set this winner takes all (and it really is) game up.

A win for Caldy or draw and it's the Championship next season, it is as simple as that. A win for Sale will then mean a win is required against Chinnor the week after, but the bonus points may well come into the equation. If Sale win and then beat Chinnor, they will have won one game more which will count if sides are level on points..

Where is my money.. Caldy, just think home advantage will be massive in this one, just hope it stays dry and the game is fully covered by the National league show, it will be great advert for National one.

But more, much more importantly than that, it will be an advert to show that rugby is played in the North, its alive and kicking and the RFU having let great clubs like Orrell, Waterloo, Liverpool St Helens, West Hartlepool  go to the wayside, really do need to make some investment in the area. You never know and the chances, might be pretty slim, but it might just wake them up, especially if they have had to send somebody up to award a trophy!

Fri 22-Apr-2022

Chinnor v Rams: 1-5 Rams to bounce back and win this derby

Darlington Mowden Park v Leeds Tykes 1-5 Massive game for Leeds, they can just see some light

Sat 23-Apr-2022

Birmingham Moseley v Cinderford. 1-5 Cindy on course for their highest ever finish

Caldy v Sale FC 4-1 : As covered above

Cambridge v Bishop's Stortford 1-5 Stortford league position is not a true position, they are a lot better than this and they would love to see the season out with this derby win

Plymouth Albion v Taunton 2-5 The Albi 17 have been massive and they are nearly out of trouble. Taunton will throw this around

Tonbridge Juddians v Rosslyn Park 0-5 In a cricket term, flat track bully, could be a big number for Park this, TJ’s just outclassed in this fixture,

As always just my views and what do I know!

So 60% of the games this weekend are meaningful . . because of promotion and relegation . . why can the RFU and Premiership not see that . . it brings crowds and sponsors!

A well written and informative piece Scrumtime, I am sure Jimbo Lad will be pleased that you have recognised Sale's never say die attitude. This is going to be a belter of a game for sure.

A few of the Caldy guys were across to watch the Sale v Blackheath game and they were impressed with the strength of the Sale side including their bench. The replacements turned the tide Sale's way against Blackheath. They are very formidable opponents. Looking at the Sale side from last Friday I only recognise Jack Moorhouse and possibly Ollie Longmore who would have played in that titanic 2016/17 game. I hope they are involved this weekend, Caldy have always had a lot of time for Jack and Ollie.

I understand from one of the Caldy guys who caught up with Jimbo Lad on Friday that there are 4 coach loads of supporters and a convoy of cars making the 40 mile journey across to the Wirral for the game. Everyone at Caldy will be working very hard this week to ensure that we can provide Jimbo Lad and his many hundreds of supporters with the best match day experience we can.

WOLWAOTB

By the way Jimbo Lad huge respect for the cartoon graphics on Sale FC's twitter feed advertsing Saturday's game .........really outstanding. ClapClapClap . I would love to be able to post them on here but technology is too much for me.

Only two sleeps Jimbo Lad !

From that game 2016/17
We’ve the same front row, it’s just that adam is now back at Caldy 😂 so from that game who’ve played for sale fc this season. Dan Birchall, Ollie, Andy Hughes (captain) Rhys (currently injured), Matt Bradley, Chris Johnson, Jack Moorhouse and Donut (who’s job moved him since start of season but I believe was on Adam’s stag last weekend) quite a few have retired since as well from that game and Matt Postlethwaite is now full time at Sharks after playing 76 games as a DR. Also I distinctly said  2 busses possibly 3 plus cars, but I do love how rugby gossip accelerates 😂😂 to be honest, Caldy are favourites for this game as it’s at home and they don’t lose too often in front of a home crowd. But, I suspect it will be the usual close game. The last four games we’ve scored 96 points against Caldy and they’ve scored 98 points against us with the biggest winning margin being the game before Christmas at 5 points! I would love to take credit for the social media graphics but that’s the social media genius and number 8 Stone PN.

Jimbo Lad,

Thanks for your research and information. To be honest I didn't have a team sheet from that epic game and I overlooked Dan Birchall (which is a difficult thing to do) and Matt Bradley. I had forgotten that April 2017 was about the time Andy Hughes came in from the Sharks so thanks for correcting me.

Chris Johnson has been a thorn in Caldy's side for years whether playing for Huddersfield, Fylde or Sale. Caldy will need to keep the penalty count down or Johnson will punish us for sure.

Apologies for overstating the travelling support from Sale ........I was told third hand that there were three or possibly four coaches descending on Paton Field...........(by now it will have probably mushroomed into 6 or possibly 7 coaches).....there are always those that just exaggerate every story!

Anyway if the number of supporters from Sale falls a little shy of the many hundreds I was reliably informed would be coming that is absolutely fine...........just gives more room for the many thousands of Caldy supporters descending on Paton Field from around the Wirral and the rest of the free world.

The prize for the furthest travelled Caldy supporter has already been won by a chap who is flying in from Australia for the game.

I look forward to buying you a drink Jimbo Lad

PS Jimbo Lad it would be appreciated if the powers that be at Sale FC could ask the Sale supporters not to bring any flares with them to Paton Field. Last Saturday on the way to the Rams game we got tangled up with a number of flare happy Man City supporters and it was just a little unsettling for those of us who's only experience of flares came back in the 60's and 70's

It is a great finale in prospect in all the nat leagues, but especially N1, certainly plenty of Championship followers will be keeping a close eye on news from the Wirral as we await at least one new addition to our number for 22/23 season... hope the game has flair but not flares!

I understand there is some prospect that this might happen. I will let you know more tomorrow.

I have just received a text message from a very important man at Caldy RFC who informed me that the Sale FC President had previously asked him to accommodate 4 coaches from Sale FC including one coach from Sale Sharks.

Now this very important man from Caldy RFC (who I will not name) has been known to get things a little garbled from time to time. Jimbo Lad has kindly pointed out that Caldy's very important man is mistaken. This misunderstanding could well be a matter of interpretation. The Sale FC President could have meant:

1. We have 4 coaches Keepy, Tote, Jonno and Briggsy from the Sharks
or
2. We have 4 coaches, 3 coaches with spectators and the Sharks players in their Sharks team coach
or
3. as Caldy's very important chap interpreted it ......there will be 4 coaches from Sale FC crammed full of spectators and a humungous convoy of cars snaking their way from Sale from early morning please ensure you can cope with hundreds if not thousands of noisy, thirsty and expectant 'Dog Lovers'.

Should really have a poll to see what Rolling Maul thinks is the most likely explanation, for the very important man from Caldy getting it hopelessly wrong.

Big Eddie, let's hope there aren't any parking issues with the influx of fans, you don't want to go upsetting the non-rugby folk by making Telegraph Rd. impassable.  Those Range Rovers struggle as it is.

Jimbo Lad,

Just seen this twitter post from Sale Sharks

"It’s 1st vs 2nd in the @Natleague_rugby Div 1, featuring some of Sharks’ brightest talents and with promotion on the line, as @CaldyRFC take on @SaleFC!"

Good of Sale Sharks to publicise the game......are they now bringing their coach?

How many Sale Sharks will be playing Jimbo Lad ....just a few or all of them ?

A bit too obtuse for me Scrumtime but I hope Jimbo Lad can give us a little sneak preview of how many of the Sharks stars could be coming to play at Paton Field on Saturday. It will help with the razzamatazz.

Caldy are very mindful about that DD......they are opening the gates from about 10-30 a.m. both to encourage people to arrive early and to make the necessary arrangements to accommodate Jimbo Lad's Convoy which could arrive at any time.

There is a curtain raiser game between Caldy's 2nd xv (which has so far notched up a winning run of more than 45 games) and Burnage 2nd xv which kicks off at 1 p.m.

Caldy's 2nd xv won the Cotton Traders North West Premier League a couple of weeks ago with two  games still to be played so are playing to extend their unbelievable winning sequence. Fantastic leadership and coaching by the outstanding duo of Andrew Soutar and Christian Jones

Unfortunately for various reasons I don't think it is going to happen..........apart from a number of logistical issues with scaffold towers/ video operators and cherry pickers there was also a potential conflict between better Pot Noodles or better Bandwidth........
