Cornish Pirates 5 - 1 Nottingham … Strong performance from the Pirates against Donny, but I see Nottingham as a tougher test for the Cornishmen. However, I wouldn’t be surprised with more of the same. Caldy 1 - 4 Richmond … Mond are a tough side to beat. They keep it tight and are not phased by partisan crowds. Caldy could be hit with a hangover here. Doncaster 5 - 1 Hartpury … Donny at home are tough, although Hartpury are no pushovers these days. A tight, high scoring game for me. Coventry 0 - 5Jersey … This fixture really worries me. Cov will square up to the Reds, but I have to go with my team and I think that they will want to make amends for the result at Vallis Way Ealing 5 -0 Ampthill … And the short straw goes to Ampthill. That said, if they can keep the game tight, the more nervous Ealing will get. I do fancy BP’s to be in the bag by HT though. LS 0 - 5 Bedford … The LS forwards would have to have the game if their lives to keep the ball away from Bedford if they have any chance in this game. Stick up yer jumper, lock it in the car and throw away the key…. Just can’t see it. Blurs backs to have a happy afternoon ------------- Tackle Low!!!!! |

Pirates 4 1 Nottingham - Pirates tough at home Caldy 5 0 richmond - Caldy on a roll and fear no one . . a muddy slog fest Doncaster 5 1 Hartpury - Donny stong at home Coventry 4 1 Jersey - should be a great game . . . Ealing 5 0 Ampthill - surely a backlash?? McQuins 4 1 Bedford - LS just going to keep bring in more and more Quins . . hopefully I am wrong and Bedford romp home!

Let’s face it. There is only one mouth-watering fixture this weekend. Ealing entertain Ampthill. And I am going to stick with my previous predictions of 5-0 whenever Ealing is involved. So, my prediction for Saturday’s result is Ealing 0-5 Ampthill. Ealing have shown a chink in their armour. They are on a downward slope. They have become Huckleberryy, thinking they only need 12 men to beat the opposition. They will be despondent. Many of their one hundred or so players will probably not want to be selected at all this week. Meanwhile Ampthill will be wanting to build on their form which has recently see them go from relative lower mid-table comfort down to second from bottom. Everything points to an easy away victory. Mind you, I hope neither team punts the ball too far up in the skies as we don’t want to hurt any of the pigs that might be flying over the pitch. Of course, there are other games. Caldy 4-1 Richmond. Caldy are on a roll but it will be close. Doncaster 4-1 Hartpury. A close battle with the home team just sneaking it. Coventry 5-2 Jersey. Could be the second best game of the weekend with Coventry's home form seeing them over the line. L Scottish 0-5 Bedford. Provided they get the ball, the Bedford backs will have a field day. ------------- Always trying to stay bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. |

Pirates 5-0 Archers Its streamed so I'll watch this and if Pirates are anything like as good as they played against Donny they should win by 10-12 points and score 4 tries. Caldy 2-3 Mond Could go either way so I punt for a draw Donny 5-1 Pury At home Donny forwards to dominate this one Cov 2-5 Jersey I rate this and Pirates away as Jersey's toughest games. In the hope they play Cook at Blindside and unlease Venner from the bench I think Jersey by under 5 points with both teams scoring four tries but it could easily go either way. Ealing 5-0 Ampthill Assuming Ealing pick their best tight five forwards. McQuins 5-1 Blues With a lot of input from the Stoop a must home win

Watching the live stream and Pirates no where near the standard they showed against Donny. Archers have had about 80% of the play and on balance should be further ahead. Pirates must have more to show second half in front of a decent crowd which the commentators estimated at around 1600. Stream quality first class. How long do you have be in this league to make a comment on a referees performance ?. He was incredibly bad....he had a bad day and missed a lot for both teams, offside, forward pass , crooked line outs, injured players laying prone and in severe pain. Ealing Trailfinders did not fire on all cylinders but this was due to pressure from Ampthill. There were some lack lustre performances from Ealing. ------------- Ambition should be made of sterner stuff. |

I don't remember Jersey losing a lineout all match. Am I imaging things? Last but one try for Jersey came after a blatant forward pass and I'm not sure how they got a 5m scrum at the end that led to the penalty try. However, Cov should have been home and hosed by then so only ourselves to blame... C

I thought Ampthill were brilliant today, they were really pumped and we struggled to match their intensity. I feared at one point the wheels were about to fall off our season! It seemed we couldn’t catch a break from the ref in the first half, couldn’t tell you if his decisions were mostly wrong or right (I don’t pretend to know what happens at the breakdown!) so I suspect neither team had any advantage. One thing I will say though is we need to stop conceding break away tries!! I think that’s three games running?! It nearly killed us today and we got away with it in the end but we might not get so lucky in the crunch games at the end of the season. All in all a great game, albeit a nail biter!

It was a good occasion at BPA, and an exciting occasion, albeit some significant flaws on show. Cov's handling was suspect, with a lot of knock-ons, while the visitors were penalised far too often - I made it approx 19 pens conceded, around twice as many as by the hosts. The Jersey lineout has been mentioned a few times - from my standpoint it was decent in the first half, with only one lost, but then went downhill after that, towards the levels seen in defeat by Ealing on Xmas Eve. Fair play to the Reds for having the spirit to come back, while Cov will definitely feel they let one get away. They replaced loose-head and hooker/capt with 5 mins to play, maybe that played a part. Both sides tried to win it in last 2 mins, credit to them for that in being willing to lose 1pt in order to win 3 more.

Well said - I was absolutely remiss earlier in not calling out how well Ampthill took their chances. Well done to the Mob for pushing Ealing hard. One bizarre facet of the game was that both teams played better into the very stiff wind.

Caldy were hosts to Richmond and despite the terrible weather what an uplifting day it was for the Ravers and their supporters. Around 150 for lunch were treated to an enjoyable meal, the presence of the Mayor of Wirral and his consort both bedecked in their splendid chains of office and our very gracious guests from Richmond which included a number of past Richmond presidents, their current President Chris Mills and their distinguished and engaging present Chairman John Heaton. The Richmond cadre were welcomed by Caldy President Graham who always sets the right tone at lunch. Graham's comedic timing isn't quite up to the same standard as his transport and logistics skills and early in his tenure he wisely cut out any pretence at humour and that sort of thing. Yesterday our Graham was at his warm and sincere but humourless best, playing the Ernie Wise to Richmond's Eric Morecambe in the form of Richmond President Chris Mills. This master of wit and repartee gave one of the most humorous and entertaining of pre match speeches ever enjoyed at Paton Field. Praising the foresight of his 96 year old father (who was sculling red wine on an adjacent table) for bringing him into the world in Wales was a good start and endeared him to a very very small number of Caldy supporters. But soon his lively and sometimes caustically funny wit enveloped all at lunch setting the perfect back drop for a tremendous Caldy performance on the pitch. In his more serious remarks Chris Mills used Rolling Maul as one of his preferred reference points as a predictive guide to the likely close nature of this round 12 fixture. Rolling Maul let Chris down. It was a dominant Caldy performance against a somewhat lack lustre Richmond side that conceded too many penalties and struggled to cope with Caldy's crunching tackling and the physicality of their punishing pack. Caldy racked up 24 points in the best 40 minutes of rugby they have played this season and went in at the break 24-0. The Ravers were dissapointed they couldn't eke out a bonus point but they will be reasonably satisfied with their performance. In contrast to other posts on round 12 the officiating at Caldy v Richmond was clear, unobtrusive and of a high standard. Both Chris Mills and John Heaton took the defeat graciously and as I wandered back to my car no one could fail to hear Caldy's external tannoy blasting out Chris Mills' declaration that he was now also a 'Raver' and on behalf of Richmond accepting a boat race challenge against Caldy's man of the match Rhys Hayes and a previous MoM recipient Adam Aigbokhae. I wouldn't put it past Chris Mills to have restored some pride for Richmond by winning that particular challenge Update: I have it on good authority that a guzzling Rhys Hayes completely bested Chris Mills

In what has been a very difficult year for Donny who I follow, a massive ray of sunshine has been the approach of Caldy and the observations of Big Eddie. At Castle Park on Boxing Day, the travelling Ravers were a credit to the club and it is evident all associated with Caldy are having a blast and winning games. The supporters of ring fencing should take note rather than condoning turning a blind eye to unsustainable prem clubs operating in a manner that the corporate world could not ignore - it is such a surprise their bankers allow them to. Bravo Caldy, looking forward to experiencing Paton Field later in the season. ------------- Transparency avoids ambiguity |

I am sorry I was unable to visit Doncaster........a tiring pre Christmas schedule left me knackered and boxing day was spent asleep. However thank you for your kind words about Caldy. Everyone associated with Caldy is loving the Championship and I can say that all the Championship clubs I have visited or who have visited Caldy have been warm, appreciative of our achievements and have been proper rugby people. The Championship experience has been far better than I imagined it would be and if in the end it is just a one season visit it still will be the best of experiences. Our visit to the RAG for the first game against Richmond was a delight. We were hosted brilliantly by Chairman John Heaton who gave us the welcome we try and give others and Nick Royle's worldy set us on the path to an inaugral Championship win. At Ampthill the Mob were huge fun and although we let a commanding lead slip away Paul Turner gave us some of the most prescient and sound advice. "You have to realise before April that you are capable of beating 9 out of the other 11 teams in this league" The visit to Bedford was something else. It was Bedford's ladies day and we all wore pink and travelled in a pink coach and arrived suffused with 3 bottles of pink fizz. We were brilliantly hosted by David Gunner and his wife and despite a pasting it was an upliffting day out. I missed the Scottish and Donny games because of work committments but I know those who travelled to Doncaster very much enjoyed the hospitality. The trip to Scottish was blighted by travel woes which very much marred the views of those that travelled but we will look forward to welcoming the Jocks to Paton Field. Do the Jocks wear kilts as part of their post match dress? In the league we have hosted, Hartpury, Nottingham, Jersey, Coventry, Cornish Pirates, Ealing and Richmond. They have all brought their own rugby model and from talking to their supporters have enjoyed the Paton Field experience........it isn't ritzy or glamorous but it is passionate and hopefully welcoming and fair. The Championship is a wonderful league and the pinnacle of what I consider to be rugby as I played it and knew it. It is sport at its best and in my view needs to be run professionally but should never be considered as a for profit business.......it doesn't work and is never likely to work.

Honest question - Is it not set out by law (8.3) that a penalty try requires a yellow card? That’s my understanding. And wondering whether Cov should have had a player binned yesterday when a PT was awarded to Jersey yesterday with 1-2 mins to play. Not saying it would have made a difference, but perhaps a tiny bit more room against 14 to snatch the most unlikely of wins
