Ealing have announced the signing of Billy Twelvetrees. A player with a famous name, who was world class in his day, but I have to wonder what role he can play at his age (34)? While he has experience at 10/12/13, would Ealing not be better off with young players who they can develop? Perhaps it is seen as more of a player/coach type role. We will see.

As he played a number of games for Gloucester in the Premiership and in Europe, I am sure he will contribute on the field for Ealing - however, I have to agree that he may well be looking at the transition into coaching.

Ealing is announcing their leavers for the year today. End of an Era as the last of the players who won promotion from Nat 1 move on.

* Hooker Alun Walker leaves after 9 seasons with Ealing. He was the teams first professional era centurion and ends with 70 tries. I understand that he is leaving professional rugby for a potential coaching role. Great guy.

* Front rower Will Davis leaves after 7 years at Ealing (across two spells). He also is a Centurion for Ealing. He is retiring from playing, but joining as a coach with the Academy.

Front rower Lewis Thiede leaves after 'only' 5 years (across two spells). His next steps are unknown.

Probably more to come later today.

The rest of the notable Ealing releases are:

* Hooker Shaun Malton - He was a frequent starter, and we now have a real lack of experience at Hooker from next year unless someone is brought in. Cam Terry is promising form the Academy, but raw.

* Jack Digby - One of several exciting South Africans signed last year, he was the only one that stuck around for a second year. He developed quite a bit, and played an important role at 8 after Rayn Smid was lost to a season ending injury half way through the year. A promising young player, and real loss. This forces Uzokwe to be our back up 8. Not a terrible option.

* Max Northcoate-Green - Highly touted back row joining from Exeter, but had horrendous injury luck. He leaves after two years.

* Jack Grant - Young Australian scrum half, he looked electric in a handful of cup run outs. Unfortunately, he suffered a nasty leg injury that ended his season and he went home, not to return. Neither of our Aussie signings this year worked out long term. This leaves Ealing thin at scrum half.

* Adam Korczyk - Huge Australian second row joined in 2019, but only made 12 appearances due to terrible injury luck. Ealing do have plenty of second rowers.

* Peter Robb - Ulster centre, looked physically impressive, but once again derailed by injuries.

The Pirates leavers, a number of decent players there:

Four of those departing are forwards, namely backrowers Jarrard Hayler, Seb Nagle-Taylor and Bear Williams, and prop Hayden King.  As for the backs, fly-half Harry Bazalgette, scrum-half Tom Kessell, centres Rory Parata, Shae Tucker and Garyn Smith, full-back/wing AJ Cant, wing Robin Wedlake, and full-back Carwyn Penny are set to leave.

Yes I know, about 40

But if you look at leaving ex Wasps./Worcester, Premiership culls, Championship leavers on this thread plus imports the target is achievable.

I don't think players are a problem, manager, pitch, management fit for purpose and ongoing ££ might be.

Who gets the Worcester / Wasps PRL funding balance?

Putting my sensible head on, rare occasion, I would suggest that players, agents and other staff may be very wary of signing anything with Wasps until there are cast iron guarantees from RFU and other relevant parties as to where they will be based and, from the club, that they would get paid during the second half of next season.
As for any funding they may wish to attract/apply for, surely this should go to pay off some of their massive debt.  All they should be entitled to should be the pittance that RFU consider sufficient to run a Championship squad.
If they are in the Championship next season then it needs to be on a level playing field, no special treatment because they have a name.

I think Dalaglio shouting out loud everywhere that Wasps are too big a brand to be relegated should give you an idea of how he will be manoeuvring behind the scenes of the PRL/RFU. There will be rules stretched way beyond reason to accommodate their privileged stars, that is of course if he has time dodging being made bankrupt himself over his unpaid tax bill.

Posted By: HookerPaul
Date Posted: 13 May 2023 at 11:59
Exactly.  All they currently have is a brand.  Remember Woolworths? Big brand.  Gone.  Think they still exist in the States under Wallmart.  Now theirs a thought.....USA Wasps anyone?

I think that we should all keep in mind that Wasps has many, many passionate rugby fans, who have no fault in what their club's management did. That doesn't mean the club should get special treatment, but we should keep in mind that those fans have been through a rough time.

If they are in the Championship next season it will be entirely due to them having special treatment.

I have sympathy for many of their fans although not for the deluded ones who are still blind to the behaviour of their past and present owners (just take a look at their online forum) but you can't give Championship places to a club just because their supporters have had a hard time.

Ealing fullback David Johnston is retiring after joining the club in 2018. Unfortunately, a serious injury ended his season in December, and following further medical advice, he'll be ending his playing career. He'll be joining the coaching staff at Ealing however, so he should still be around. DJ was a major player in Ealing's success over the past few seasons, and his leadership on the pitch was clearly missed in the second half of the season, contributing to some of the mid-season wobbles that Ealing experienced after a flying start.

Donny announce 20 players leaving

A lot of players there and quite a few good ones!

John Kelly is the only destination we know about, as reported Falcons bagged him.
Rumour as it that one forward is going to the smoke and another forward over the water

I was also thinking are they signing up Wasps supporters as there is an opportunity there to turn their 2,500 crowds starting with a 3 or 4.

From what I have seen, there seems to have been very little conversion from Wasps (or Worcester), which given the exciting rugby on display, is very surprising.

I do appreciate people have their own teams for reasons, of course.

Apparently ST sales are well up on this time last year, but doubt there are many Wasps fans among them as most of those appear to have been travelling from where they belong, or from Brum.
I would imagine many are lapsed Cov regulars and occasionals of which there are probably thousands.
I'm a lapsed ST holder btw having not had one last season for the first time in I don't know how long. There was little point as I was out of the country for about 70 percent of the season.
Not sure if I'll be in it for much of next season either which is a shame as for the first time in years I'm thinking Cov might do quite well Confused
Now back to signings, as the thread should be! Wink

I had the privilege of coaching with Steve Hill when he was head coach for Oxford University. It was only for a day and we were working with the Ealing U16's at Iffley Rd. It was a master class in coaching ( from him ) and his enthusiasm  and knowledge were outstanding.
I have watched Richmond play many times against most other Championship teams and I believe he eeks out everything from the part time players.
He is a brilliant coach and will be missed at Richmond. He deserves  a post at a rugby club befitting his ability.

Hear, hear! He is also a seriously good thinker about our game. It was his drive that got us 14 team Leagues, not 12. He is also supportive in private ways with coaches and players.

A shame about Hughes if this is true. Been our best/most consistent Hooker since PC.
His throw is on a par for Bedford (not a commendation) but is our best around the park since Jacob Fields was back in the day. I expect him to be saying goodbye shortly.

I heard this in confidence a couple weeks ago, and am excited. Craig Hampson is a fine scrum half, but Lloyd has 32 Wales caps, and should be on a other level.

Never really made the breakthrough to a regular first team place unlike his contemporaries from the 2021 Academy; Ball, Betteridge(s), Mitchell, James etc.
Hopefully he'll find his feet at Lady Bay.
Good luck Jake.
