Some big players in there, we will miss all of them respectfully but massively miss Josh Crickmay, and Dave Fisher in the pack and the boot of Matt (Kylie) Minouge next year

That could be correct, as I understand it Blackheath have added an entire new front 5 to their current squad

Shock horror a rugby club talks to players about next season during the summer off season when most are out of contract. Be interesting if these knowledgeable people could name their source

Clubs speak to players all year, to understand their contractual commitments, interest, motivation, and financial expectations.

Agents essentially pimp players out to clubs trying to find their clients what they are looking for. Personally I don’t think any contact with a player is underhand unless they are poaching trying to get a player to break an existing agreement.

I know when I played after games opposition coaches regularly asked questions such as what are your plans for next year, how far do you commute and are travel costs covered, and sometimes as open as do you fancy coming down to play for us next season then linking with how much I would get.

It’s a competitive sport on the field and for it to be competitive an expectation of competitiveness off the field should be a given.

Just my opinion…. But complaining about approaching players is sour grapes, your coaches, committee and others are doing the exact same thing.

Yes even I was approached back in the 1970's lol, but do National 1 players really have agents?

I wouldn't hold your breath. Some posters seem happy to bad mouth others but are strangely reluctant to provide any evidence.

Okay I promise when I go to watch Kent this afternoon I will be very careful what I say to any players I should speak to in case it is construed that I am trying to get them to change clubs not that I have any authority to do so

DMP announce core forwards who’ve re-signed for next season -  https://www.mowdenpark.com/news/dmp-announce-retained-forwards-2778966.html" rel="nofollow - https://www.mowdenpark.com/news/dmp-announce-retained-forwards-2778966.html

Great to see all of the players retained by the club in particular-

Joe Craggs
Will Jones
Yaree Fantini

I’m sure all of the above have had offers from clubs higher up the tiers great to see them in DMP colours again next year.

Darlington Mowden Park can confirm the retention of 11 forwards ahead of the 2023/24 National One season. With over 500 caps amongst them, the retained players include a mix of youth and experience. Asked about keeping the bulk of the forwards together: "We're pleased to have a core group of lads commit to next season. We are heavily active in trying to recruit some key positions to help push us forward for 2023/24."

Alfie Barron

Since his arrival from Hartpury in 2017, Alfie Barron has established himself as a mainstay in the DMP front row. Missing only a handful of games in his time at the club, Alfie reached 100 league appearance against Esher in December, and was one of three players to play in every game this season.

Sam Kyle-Clay

After signing from Fylde last summer, Sam Kyle-Clay has played a big part in his first season with the club whilst missing just 2 games all year. Since making his debut against Chinnor in September, Sam has been a regular in the DMP front row and goes into his second season with the club in 2023/24.

Isaac Kayada

Former Wasps Academy prop Isaac Kayada joined DMP mid way through the 2023/24 season, making his 1st XV debut against Plymouth in March. The Durham University student goes into his first full season with the club in 2023/24.

Carl Guest

Having signed from Hartpury in 2021, Carl Guest heads into his third season with the club in 2023/24. Able to cover both hooker and prop, Carl has amassed 41 league appearances in his two seasons in the North East, scoring 4 tries in the process.

Max Fraine

A new arrival for 2022/23, New Zealander Max Fraine has quickly established himself in the DMP front row. The young hooker has made 23 appearances in his opening season, including a Man of the Match performance against Plymouth in March.

Max Davies

Former England U20 international Max Davies heads into his fourth full season with the club, having arrived from Ealing Trailfinders in 2019. Max recently made his 50th DMP appearance against Plymouth, scoring 3 tries in 19 games this season.

Talite Vaioleti

Heading into his 10th season with the club, Tongan lock Talite Vaioleti has established himself as a firm fan favourite in the North East since his arrival from Jersey in 2013. Mowden's most capped active forward, Vaioleti has made 180 league appearances including 13 this season.

Joe Craggs

An ever-present at the club, Joe Craggs has been an integral part of the DMP pack since his 1st XV debut in 2015. Craggs has amassed 178 appearances for the club at lock and back row, playing almost every minute of a 2022/23 season which saw him earn Man of the Match honours on four occasions.

Yaree Fantini

DMP's Supporters Player of the Season for 2022/23, flanker Yaree Fantini has made an instant impact at the club since his arrival from Benetton Treviso last summer. Having scored 14 tries in 23 appearances, Yaree heads into his second season with the club in 2023/24.

Will Jones

After arriving from Ospreys in 2021 Will Jones has quickly become a mainstay in the number 7 shirt, making 44 appearances in two seasons in the North East. DMP's Player of the Season for 2022/23, Will heads into his third season with the club in September.

Ollie Hodgson

DMP captain Ollie Hodgson extends his stay at the club having made his 150th appearance against Moseley in February. Since his debut in 2013, Ollie has been a huge part of the squad and has captained the side since 2017. This season has seen him score 4 tries in 17 league appearances at number 8.

Now I understand what they are trying to achieve, but are they not in danger of upsetting the team who got them their promotion?
I'm sure all clubs will be looking to expand or strengthen their squads, but were I a second row at the club I might just feel a tad peed off, unless of course someone has either retired or left.

It might well upset them if we had any, other than a DR we haven’t had a recognised Lock for 2-3 years. We don’t know whether the DR will carry on next season due to tackle laws so we still find ourselves looking especially for that position and they seem to be pretty scarce

Its always good to strengthen a team when possible and good locks are the key to winning scrums and lineouts, as Barnes showed Club last season. New players also add healthy competition for existing 1st team players, thereby raising the team's overall performance.

Bit thin on the ground following departures. Billingham
have some decent backs who may be able to step up and or two at Blaydon despite their relegation. Not sure about Falcons Academy loanees.
Otherwise it’s getting the proverbial cheque book out.

I’m not sure recruits from Blaydon or Billingham would offer much more talent, from what is available from the Elizabethans team. There are some cracking younger players coming whom have been blooding themselves into senior rugby for the last year or two. I mean no disrespect to either of the clubs above just saying looking internally for talent could offer similar rewards.

However I am sure there will be a few players coming on board from home and abroad, hopefully a couple of locks whom make the grade as it seems a few of the last players brought in either only played a handful of times or just diddnt make the team?

Guess size isn’t the key factor, especially when it sometimes seems there's a lack of heart and desire.

I recall the 6ft10 South African signing a couple of years ago and well a phase of ‘mouse in a lions frame’ comes to mind.

I would like to see Chris Wearmouth from Tynedale or similar come on board to help the pack next year

We'll miss him, but really he'd lost the starting No 8 jersey to captain Ollie Stedman, and was used recently as a replacement or as a blindside flanker.  Tremendous servant to the club though.

Henry Peck was very unlucky to miss this season after an accident at work that nearly cost him his eye. Had he been playing this season, I think he may well have retained his place.

Played seven games for us at the start of the season starting six, even keeping Kwaku on the bench in September. He scored two tries.

Not sure if anything went wrong, but he played his last game for us in November.
I think he just dropped to fifth choice for back three.
Then we started putting Mat Hema on the wing, as we had too many good centres for a while - so there was no chance of game time.

He played a game for Newport in February.

. Which Newport is this?

Edit - answered my own question after a bit of delving on the RFU website, it's Newport (Salop).

Fraser Honey signs for Rams from Redruth. I don't know much about him, other than he has also played for Albion and captains the Cornish Men's

For clarity, that's two hookers and a prop

I make it that we now have four props, two hookers, four in the back row and four outside backs.  Waiting on second rows and half backs really.

And another back row if you're short at any time (Sam played in the back row in Cov's Academy before converting to 2).

Ed Hoadley signs for Rams from Scottish. Must admit I've not seen him play but seems he's been around the block in the Champ and Prem so no bad thing. Not sure he'll take the 9 shirt off Ollie Cole any time soon though. Squad building nicely.

That is a class signing, if his knee is sorted, which has/was a major issue he will make a massive difference. He pulled that Redruth pack around for 3 seasons and in all honestly should have gone up with Redruth 2 seasons ago.
He stays fit, he is a big part of Rams game plan and will be north of 200 points as well..

Just seen the reference to Fraser Honey, having seen him three or four times before his injury I would say he is championship material. Understand he fell out with the Pirates but is still captain of Cornwall when fit.

Interesting that you believe he fell out with us, as he played for Redruth and has never played for the Pirates.

Moseley have retained Ben Morris, Morgan Dawes and Will Safe (all back row).

The squad is showing a great deal of stability carrying over from last season, with the core of the pack staying on and the outside backs looking good.  Some news from the half back area would be nice, but that will surely come soon.

Ben Atkins to Rams. Another new edition for next season, and competition in the back row will be fierce! Haven't seen him play before, guessing he was a Prem Cup player and didn't feature in the Prem itself very often. His brother Jacob was a decent fly half for Irish and Rams, think he has gone abroad to play in Italy now.

Ben Atkins a great back row signing. Irish had offered him a contract while he finished his degree. Played a lot for Esher last season and was usually outstanding. Disappointed that he has gone to Rams and not back to Esher.

Looks like some clubs are splashing the cash this season. I’m assuming with the demise of LI, Worcester/Wasps means that it’s a buyers market?

Given the competitiveness of the league last year, that makes this season a very interesting proposition indeed.

I would suggest outside the Premiership and Championship quite often.

Really? I would suggest South Leicester, Old Elthamians would prove that statement as not totally accurate. Plenty of clubs spend more than they bring in, because they have one or two big spending sugar daddies. It's not just the Prem and Champ clubs. Sustainability is a massive issue in rugby and I would suggest the issue of lack of sustainability runs far deeper than just the Prem or Champ clubs.

I guess those striving for promotion will have a different agenda to those not, Leicester Lions had a 5 year plan to get to Nat 1, that included recruiting experienced players to strengthen the squad and build a team. I don't know, but I am guessing the next 5 year plan will not include promotion to Prem2/Championship this season.

It looks like it's helping us to cherry pick in order to strengthen.

One of the most pleasing things - virtually unheard of for a Moseley fan in recent years - is the level of continuity we're managing this season with last season's squad.

I still maintain we had a very good but too small squad last season, and carried too many injuries to key players for too much of the season.

Tables don't lie, but if the dice had rolled slightly differently I reckon we'd have done a lot better with broadly the same players as we had. We wouldn't have won the league, but I can see a scenario where we were well clear of needing to look over our shoulder.

Which was the most frustrating thing about last season - flashes of brilliance from the backs, and a pack that could contend with anyone, punctuated by yet more broken bones and players all-at-sea well out of position through necessity.

Rams sign another young London Irish player, again not seen him play but he's an England U19 and was on loan at Barnes last season, who did well trying to keep pace with Blackheath in N2E from memory so sure he'll be fine at Nat 1 level.

I think you signed a Barnes player, who may well be able to step up.

Being in the academy gives an aura, but does not mean they are ever going to be good enough for the Premiership.

I am also not sure if England U19 or U20 is any better.

Indeed, if he is playing in Nat 2 at 19 and keeps fit I'd hazard that he could have a promising future ahead of him, sadly not at Irish, but in the semi-pro domain nevertheless.

The more the merrier with regards squad size as you'll know, injuries can mount, and having the quality in depth could be the difference between securing one more draw than the nearest competition in the league, and thus getting promoted when all is said and done Wink
