Do we think any Championship clubs will spring a surprise against a Premiership club this weekend? We probably need to see team announcements.

Pirates v Bath
Ampthill v Newcastle
Gloucester v Nottingham
Quins v Hartpury
Leicester v Caldy
Coventry v Saracens
Sale v Blues
Ealing v Saints

Knights v Cambridge
Exeter v Bristol
Scottish v Reds

It's a bit scary seeing Cambridge amongst such austere company. As The Blues says, team announcements will give a clearer picture, however of the Championship / Premiership games, the one that junps out is Caldy at Leicester. Stranger things have happened as Ealing found out on The Wirral 😎

Of those, Pirates look to have the game where it’s most likely, but who knows.  Coventry on their day….  Just sayin’

Looking through the games where Championship sides are drawn against Premiership sides, I think the Premiership sides will prevail in all bar one. I think Ealing have a chance of toppling Northampton.

Of the rest, I think Doncaster will beat Cambridge, Jersey will win at London Scottish, and Exeter will see off Bristol.

Do not beat up the Saints too badly, we do not want to meet the on the rebound.
We want a complacent Saints so we do not suffer too muh.

Wish I had your confidence. Our problem is that we've had a big turnover of players since last season, especially in the backs. We've lost Arwel Thomas, Bazelgette, AJ Cant, Rodin Wedlake, Shea Tucker, Rory Parata and Garyn Evans all experienced and high class performers. Pirates looked quite good in the two pre-season games against Plymouth Albion, but this will be a step up from that I reckon.

Ampthill to beat Newcastle! That's a brave shout. I hope you are right. Who knows, Newcastle might field a massively weakened team and have a lousy trip down the A1. A bit like the one I had last Friday. Quite deservedly, Caldy have had all the highlights lately for punching above their weight, but if anything Ampthill are a smaller club so to beat a Premiership team would be absolutely marvellous.

I'd love to know what folk are basing all these predictions on.
Not knowing squat about the opposition's strengths is one reason I don't indulge in guessing games - even more so for the first game in an unknown competition.
But if it keeps people happy... dip yer bread in.

Probably not mate. Seriously though it wont matter how the Championship pans out this season but if Donny or Cov don't end up top there will be no promotion. Jersey, Blues  & Ealing are not entitled and I cant see anyone else winning the league can you?

Looking forward to tomorrow’s game against Cambridge who we have only played once before. That was in the late 1990’s when we won fairly comfortably at home in the RFU Intermediate Cup. Can anyone remember what was unique about that game?. I’ll post the answer next week,

Bath is a curious one - their website shows they have fixed up a friendly v Edinburgh, away, on evening of Fri 6 Oct, altho' they are also due to host Exeter in Prem Cup that w/e (Bath site says 'tbc' for that game, Exeter list it as Sat at 2pm) Confused

Cov vs Sarries is one to ponder.
Certainly Sarries are the strongest out there, even sans internationals - but it entirely depends on whether they decide to go for it and field their strongest available side.
Whatever, Cov shouldn't lack for motivation.

A very strong Ealing team, with a few new players debuting. Strangest is seeing Bruce Houston from Edinburgh on the bench as injury cover at fly half. Must be a horrible run of injuries as we had several on the books.

Full strength Ealing should put this Northampton team to the sword.

I don’t think they’ll be as many 5-0s to the Prem team as being suggested here. With the exception of Tigers vs Caldy, I think the champ teams could all be competitive. I would’ve thought Ealing, Pirates and possibly even Coventry and Bedford will be favourites for their respective fixtures.

Cambridge vouched well for themselves for the first 20/30 minutes but then fitness started to tell. Maul defence was good by Cambridge. The knights looked good, great showings on their home debuts by AJ Cant and Seb Nagle Taylor our Academy development player now on a full time contract Adam Hopkins performed very well too.

Hard to pick a MoM but Alex Dolly was finally nominated by the match sponsor.

On a plus note one of my predictions was on the money Knights 5 - 0 Cambridge 😁

I think there was initially one posting asking it to be renamed to Prem Cup (which would be sensible IMO) or moving to the Champ thread. I can't recall any debate?
Seems a shame that it has been fractured with early comments/fixtures etc left on the CC thread.
Still, it matters little I guess

Personally think this forum is for Championship clubs, so keep it all together and the dedicated Championship cup (which this isn’t) had a lot less interaction.

👍. That’s a great crowd for a Friday Night with “another” rugby match on at the same time. Enjoyed the game but I thought Cambridge were better than the score suggested. Having said that, Donny looked quite slick at times and took their tries well.

Looks to be mostly the same starting XV from last season?

I was jesting! Probably most iconic game in Caldy's history.......Leicester Tigers with home advantage slight favourites

Pirates young team acquitted themselves well but were undone by a few too many errors. Bath were very good and looked dangerous ever time they had the ball. Pirates defended well but went behind in the second half, the pivotal score coming when Pirates were attacking, spilled the ball and Bath went the length of the field with good support running and scored a lovely try. Pirates didn't give up, got a score late in the game to get within six points, then hammered away at the Bath line for several phases trying to get the winning score. Bath defended manfully then got the crucial turnover.
Capacity 3,000 crowd and great to see so many Bath supporters.

Blues make a late change to the bench. Onajaife (lock) injured and Patten (prop) in… turning into Jersey Reds with 4 front rowers on the bench.

Somewhat surprisingly that the biggest score is between two Prem teams- Exeter are destroying Bristol 68-0!

This hasn’t aged well

If anybody wants easy money, the prem rugby cup games are on betting sites. Northampton Saints are the favourites against Ealing tomorrow. Feels like free money to bet on Ealing.

I’ve taken a shot on Bedford at 16/1 against Sale. We might not be favourites but feel our chances are a lot better than that.

FT

Ampthill 17 - 40 Newcastle
Exeter 75 - 0 Bristol
Gloucester 42 -14 Nottingham
Quins 54 - 14 Hartpury
Leicester 50 - 6 Caldy

Current

Coventry 21 - 14 Saracens

Could do with Coventry and Blues winning or getting at least close results, with an Ealing win tomorrow (which I can’t I see not happening).

Exeter want to win something this year, this may well be their only chance, nice to see them buying into the ethos of competition, we all expect the sides will beef up later, but in the first round?

Sale very physical in defence and organised (not a surprise), Blues not so!
