The Championship Clubs Podcast produced a brilliant episode this weekend, choosing the All-Time Championship Legends Team to celebrate the end of the Championship in its current form, before it becomes The Champ.

1. Robin Hislop
2. Alun Walker
3. Colin Quigley
4. Matt Challinor
5. Barney Maddison
6. Paul Tupai
7. Carl Kirwan
8. Mark Bright
9. Craig Hampson
10. Jake Sharp
11. Dean Adamson
12. JP Socino
13  Michael Le Bourgeois
14. David Williams
15. Rich Lane

Definitely worth a listen.

It was a good listen. Unless I missed it I'm surprised James Pritchard wasn't discussed for Full Back, long championship career across a few different clubs and must be up there as one of the top points scorers.

I haven't listened yet, but Pritchard and Dave Jackson of Nottingham were two full-backs who I really enjoyed watching

Just finished listening. Pritchard got quite a good write-up at full-back but was dismissed as a lot of his career was pre-Championship. Jackson was mentioned as a winger. About half a dozen names who were shortlisted actually played in Regional One South Central last season, mainly for Jersey but also Tommy Bell (LW) and David McIlwaine (Brighton Blues)

I think there was a bit of recency bias with a lot of the selections influenced by who Charlie Beckett played with/against. It was just for players who played after the Championship rebrand so doesn’t include their time when it was called Nat 1, but I’m pretty sure Pritchard is still the Championship’s leading all time points scorer so I’d still have him over Lane. Rob Cook of Pirates didn’t even get a mention and he’d be the main rival for the 15 shirt for me.

If you are looking for a points scorer you go for Pritchard but anything else Lane is your choice. The one pick that suprised me was Jake Sharp at FH think there have a few better than him. But overall some great players mentioned who were outside the 23

I chuckled when I saw Sharp's name.
TBH, I don't think there's been a better outhalf in the Championship than Pellegrini.

I don’t disagree that Pellegrini has probably been the most talented fly half to play in this league. However, he did only play for a couple of seasons so I’m not sure that’s long enough to warrant a place in the all time XV for a league that’s been going 16 years. My vote for the 10 would’ve gone to Jonny Bentley.

Another player that wasn’t mentioned on the podcast was Tim Streather at 13. He played the first 4 seasons of the league so maybe has been forgotten but he was a class player. I may as well have a pop at my team now:

15. James Pritchard
14. David Williams
13. Tim Streather
12. JP Socino
11. Dean Adamson
10. Craig Willis
9. Gavin Cattle
8. Mark Bright
7. Ryan Burrows
6. Paul Tupai
5. Ben Gulliver
4. Matt Challinor
3. Colin Quigley
2. Alun Walker
1. Alan Paver

I’ve cheated a bit putting Burrows at 7 but I couldn’t really think of a quality championship 7 who played more than a couple of seasons and feels harsh leaving Burrows out!

Edit: I didn’t realise Jonny Bentley missed the best part of 2 seasons with injury during his time with pirates. I also didn’t realise how long Craig Willis had been at Ealing. I’ve changed my pick to him.

Biased obviously but this recent selection with 4 Pirates included seems a rather better balance than the original selection with none!
