Camberley  seems to have its own micro climate! Every time I've  been it's as if Putin has managed to scoop up a parks worth of siberia and dump it in Surrey!
Anyway the freezing cold day put a dent in our hopes in more ways than the result...our formidable  prop Elliot suffered an horrific arm injury and could be out for a considerable  amount of time, this added to our already sizeable list of injuries we could do without.
A decent first half by our boys against money bags Camberley couldn't be replicated in the second and our penalty count was taken full advantage of by the opposition, no complaints on that front, however the bunch of ancient dins on the balcony who were shouting everytime we kicked for the posts need to lay off their pre match half of shandy I reckonClown
A great sing song competition in the clubhouse after was great fun and was won hands down by us, their hooker was trying to rally his troops but couldn't sing a word without looking  at the lyrics on his phone ( duty boy is on the cards for that I reckonWink)
As always good to speak their DOR Gareth and no I don't  believe  what you told me your wage bill is a month..... that's  what they pay for your pies mate !

Interesting point about paying players, how many clubs at this level are doing it? Does it make a big difference?

I don't think many teams pay at this level, or in this league, anyway.  In any league below the Championship there's always a suspicion that the top clubs are paying, and Camberley have always been fairly open about it, but I know Tony has made it very clear that Havant don't pay, so if there were a finger of suspicion it would be pointed at Wimbledon and probably Oxford Quins.

Does it make a difference?  As I said to someone on Saturday, if we paid these boys £50 a week, would it make them better players?  On the plus side, you get a level of commitment because there's a form of contract in place, and if we could expect our best players to train twice a week without fail and make themselves available every single Saturday we'd probably be in a  stronger position.  Some players want (expect?) to be paid and will be attracted by the money but, certainly in the London area, a lot of players have decent jobs and while another couple of grand (£100/week for 20 games) would be very welcome I don't know if it compensates for playing with your mates and that 'culture' that makes rugby clubs special.  Maybe I'm being spectacularly naïve there...

It's pretty much well known in Regional 1 South WIMBLEDON  and CAMBERLEY pay, heard an interesting figure for Wimbledon's  monthly outgoings and it was an eye watering amount but obviously not verified and could be just a rumour and I think Gareth was telling me porkies about Camberleys monthly figure!
I don't know about the other teams in this league , I can only say for certain that we don't pay ( not even our coaches)
But like you say does it make a difference ?  almost certainly yes for the obvious reasons that if you pay you can attract the best players but on the other hand we have got to where we are without paying .We are lucky that the vast majority of players we have are all playing for the club they played m&j rugby with and there is a superb amount of loyalty here, having said that they would ALL say yes to a few quid if it was available that's pretty obvious, but the club are very reluctant to go back to the dark old days when we did pay and nearly went out of business because the money was unsustainable, so when the money went so did  the players!

All valid points, I had a quick look through the team sheet for Camberley and the majority of their team were playing last year in London 1. From the team that faced Havant only 3 of their players wasn’t in the squad last year.

That would tend to say that they haven’t brought in success this season but developed the squad they had?. I haven’t looked at the Wimbledon squad, I wonder how Many new players they brought in this season.

Camberley were outstanding last year - they put together 18 consecutive bonus point wins from October to the end of the season - and they've retained the majority of the squad.

We played Wimbledon pre-season and it was hard to detect a UK accent. Didn't recognise many of their players from within the team that played us in the league last year.

Would love to know who you heard this "interesting eye watering figure" from. LOL

At the game last Saturday around H/T I was told (3rd hand at best) the wage bill for one of the top two was £17K a month.
By 19:00 it was £35k a month + cars + houses.
So just clubhouse bar Cojones methinks.
All well and good if you have a sugar daddy, that's till he walks...

Regulation 7: "For clubs whose men’s first XV team plays at Regional 1: the threshold is £50,000 of Gross Payments paid or payable to players and including the payment of Player Coaches save that only £7,500 of the costs of each of the first and second Player Coaches will be excluded in calculating whether or not the threshold has been exceeded."

So I think most of the numbers being bandied around have to be taken with a Wasps-debt sized mountain of salt.

But there is no penalty for exceeding such limits other than to remove your club from being eligible for any RFU grants or loans (which are virtually non-existent these days anyway). People DO   refer to it as a "Salary Cap" - It's not!

They sound like the RFU council. Very out of touch with what’s actually going on.

Depends if they are doing it above board. If they get caught doing it "under the table" as Medway did a few years ago, the RFU throw the book at them and forcibly relegate them regardless of where they finish (according to precedent).

Out of 26 players that played that day 3 were non “UK” £
