As I've said to you before you aren't the sharpest tool.

That lot didn't have ambition they had cash and lots of it. Students also had a significant change in cirmcunstance.

Remember Mounts Bay? Well imagine Huckleberryermouth coming into cash. They still wouldn't have any better players to choose from

I don't know about the sharpest tool but from the way you behave you just appear to be a tool.

Well done Mr Evans. Appear in the middle of a discussion which has nothing to do with you or Rosslyn Park and you get offensive to people. Mmmmm I wonder who the tool is?

This whole subject is getting boring.

Obviously, others think so because they have resulted to abusing each other.

It matters a lot to us lads up North. If you are bored then don't read it.

with money, not on coming through the clubs junior ranks, and by
the way Sale did not have a junior section selling of the land what the owned as made them succesful

I am sure there are many more qualified here to post about Sale FC...but it was always my understanding that they have had considerable assets for years but chose to remain as an amateur club until the relatively recent shift in direction.

This is the professional era and if a club is lucky enough to find itself in money...through whatever (legal) means then they should not be prevented from seeking to better their standing. İt is down to the members/directors of that club to ensure the money is used in a wise and sustainable way.

The clubs that have no interest in that side of the game have come up with their own local solution (Lancashire Leagues) and despite my initial reservations I think for those clubs that embrace it, it is a great solution.

I still share a few misgivings about Cumbrian clubs being cut adrift but hopefully an improved solution can be found for 2 seasons time

Actually, winning games is what made us successful. I'll be honest, I can't really follow your point, but, I'm assuming you don't know much about Sale FC as a club.  We've rebuilt since Sharks left and as someone above said, the decision was made to move from an Amateur team to a semi-pro team a few years ago.  Very much like every other club in the National Leagues, we pay our players, but the way some people speak, you'd think they were all on 6 figure salaries.

Anyhoo. As for this Northern Revolt, the worrying thing here is that there are so many egos involved I'm amazed anything ever gets decided at all. It also appears we have a huge gap between expectation and reality. If your club/players literally cannot afford (either in time or money) to go traipsing up and down motorways every other weekend but also want to play rugby, so, let's come up with a way of making it cost less.
Even the simplest of expenses to those with money (wireless comms and video recording) are not something a club struggling financially can afford.

It really isn't that complicated, yet, the whole system of rugby in this country contrives to take something seemingly simple and devise a way to make the least number of people happy.

I hope the clubs in the Lancashire League genuinely are amateur clubs just trying to find a better solution to be self sustainable.

It might be silly season but hearing a Level 8 Lancashire Club throwing money around like it's confetti. A club that should've learnt its lesson and one that still needs to actually build some infrastructure. These clubs just never learn.

HM don't be coy. Think you are referring to a lay-by at the side of the M6 near Wigan. They are still in the RFU Leagues so maybe they have bigger plans?

I believe the phrase "A lay by on the M6" is copyright of Will Carling.

Might be throwing money but trying to convert league players will only get so far.

If my memory is correct then it was pre-Carling and was after the Quins lost in the mid-seventies.

It was 1973/74
Lay-by at side of M6 25 - Harlequins 7
The Lay-by went on to beat Northampton 19-9 before losing 12-3 to London Scottish in the semis
Thought it sounded like a Brian Moore quote but he was only 13 at the time? Any other suggestions?

Possibly Nigel Starmer-Smith although I'm sure it was from a "Quins Official"

I'm like a dog with a bone now!
Starmer-Smith is a real possibility and also Marcus Rose who were both playing for Quins & England in 73

Rose made his England debut in 1981!

Thanks Richard - my mistake
Quite a few references to be found by Google but only that it came from Harlequins but NOT who actually said it!
