"The lessons of the past are never learned"

Are debt levels in the National League unsustainable, and will clubs go out of business chasing the Football League dream?”

From the Non League Football Paper. Not rugby, but the fifth tier of Football in this country. Similar problems to Ourselves.

Meanwhile, despite terrific crowds, The debts of the clubs in the Championship football league make RBS liabilities after Lehman Brothers look manageable.

I love the idea that these so called bright businessmen believe that there are hidden rugby enclaves that are untapped and can fill vast stadiums every weekend. Rugby is a minority sport except the tribalism and tradition of the six nations. Delusional to think otherwise

Not quite there are derby games and the Twickenham club games draw decent crowds in the premiership, Exeter have with the help of a money man made a decent go of it with decent crowds in a rather distant location.

Really? Cheap tickets for one-off games does not make the platform for a solid fan-base. Let's see what happens to Exeter when Tony Rowe goes.

I'd say the Twickenham club games pretty much draw the same corporate drinking-monkeys that the 6N draws, so not really a fair comparison with club rugby at proper grounds.

I've wondered if the "Big games" actually bring A) a profit and B) new continuing fans.

For A you have to factor in hiring a ground, Tottenham can't come cheap for Saracens and factor in any 'discounted' tickets.

For B I think most just go for the atmosphere (and beer!) but wouldn't venture to a normal game.

Even with the extra costs, and the marketing and the cost of the other entertainments, Quins management have indicated that they start making extra profit - over a full house at the Stoop - at about 40,000 fans, and regularly get 60,000. Which is why they now play two games across the road.

Some of that is due to the fact the stoop is too small, but they are struggling to extend it.

The music is always aimed at young fans, and they look at it as a way of getting children introduced to watching rugby. Who will come back as season ticket holders some time later.

I live in Guildford, which is where Quins have their training base. As a result I meet quite a few locals who 'follow' Quins but would probably only go to the Stoop occasionally. But I find that many of these do go to the bigger games at Twickenham.

I wouldn't say they are 'drinking monkeys' and I think to characterise this as 'people who wouldn't venture to a normal game' is too black & white too; they may go to lower league rugby or be involved in rugby themselves on a Saturday or Sunday, that doesn't mean they are not interested.

So given the chance to see well known names playing in a world class venue & treat the kids to a day out, without quite the same level of expense, transport chaos and crowds that comes with a trip to the 6N, I can see why they go, can't you?

From Quins PoV it's all about building the brand. Given what's gone on elsewhere, this looks to me like a rugby success story, even if I don't actually like the corporate ethos.

I think it shows that rugby can be a success without throwing away its soul, if it is better managed and regulated by the RFU to ensure everyone benefits down to the grass roots.

What has always concerned me is the extent to which the effort that Premiership Clubs put in to gaining an audience detracts from the player numbers at smaller Clubs. I don't have, and haven't read any evidence, which shows this but my own anecdotal experience at Quins games was that much of the audience was of playing age. What is known is that playing numbers have declined over the period when audience numbers have risen.

My younger son goes regularly with a large group of friends to The Big Games (both of them) and whichever Friday night or Sunday matches he can get tickets for that don’t clash with his own (school) matches.

Quins do a good job at attracting new supporters. He became a supporter through attending matches as part of their Curtain Raiser Cups and Land Rover Trophies (back when little ones could win things). The neutrals in his group of friends have now adopted the club and the Irish and Wasps fans have had to admit it’s a good show. They go to the odd game at Irish too.

Your call for the destruction of Sweeney is noted. Rugby servanda est. I fear the two are mutually dependant.

Tigers, Saints, Barf and Gloucester usually have decent crowds, Tigers usually sell around 20,000 tickets

The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has withdrawn the licence for Wasps to continue to play in the league structure.  This means that Wasps will not be able to play in the Championship next season.

In order to be sure that Wasps were in a position to play in the Championship, the RFU set a deadline for the club to meet the commitments it had made when the licence was first approved and recommit to participating in the Championship in 2023/24.  These included evidencing payment to Rugby Creditors and putting in place suitable governance structures including a majority independent Board and a process for managing risk.  The RFU was also concerned about the lack of progress engaging coaching staff and players.  The club stated that it could not meet these commitments, recommit to participating in the Championship in 2023/24 or engage staff of players until further finance was secured.

The RFU had worked with the club’s new owners to give the club the best chance of continuing in the league structure and recognises the effort the new owners have put in to try to make this happen.  However, the RFU Board decided that in order to give certainty to other clubs, the licence to continue to play is withdrawn.

Bill Sweeney, RFU CEO said: “This is not the outcome anyone in rugby wanted and all those involved with the club will be deeply disappointed.  We have worked with the new owners for the past six months to try to ensure that a robust plan could be put in place for the club to continue to play in the Championship while players and staff could receive monies owed to them.”

“The RFU is working closely in partnership with Premiership Rugby and the Rugby Players Association to ensure players are supported.  We are also working together at pace to ensure the game emerges from this challenging time on a strong and sound financial footing.”

Wasps will now move to the bottom of the playing pyramid and certainty can now be provided to the Championship clubs over the season structure for 23/24.
