It should be one of Scarlets biggest home gates of the season.
Yes. Ospreys is the true Derby.

Maybe they wouldn't lose so much money if they cut the number of regions to zero!

Why not? Send them back to the traditional Welsh Premiership clubs. More clubs mean more opportunities for players to have a chance.

The WRU is already struggling to get value from Test matches in Cardiff.
£13.50 starting prices this autumn. Continuing to damage their own supply chain (i.e. the Pro game) as they have this last decade or so will kill the WRU.

Too late now I would imagine but I do think Welsh rugby would be in a better state if it hadn't have created artificial regional sides with no tradition and history and instead have created a new structure based around the clubs.

Background (AI) The Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) moved to a regional team structure in 2003 for several key reasons, primarily driven by financial pressures and a desire to improve the competitiveness of Welsh rugby at both club and international levels. Here's a breakdown of the main factors: * Financial Sustainability: Before regionalization, Wales had nine professional clubs competing in the top league and cross-border competitions like the Celtic League (now United Rugby Championship). Many of these clubs were struggling financially after rugby union turned professional in 1995. There simply wasn't enough money in Welsh rugby to support so many professional teams, leading to clubs operating at a loss, limited player development, and generally poor facilities. * Improved Competitiveness: The "dilution" of talent across numerous clubs meant that Welsh sides were generally not competitive against stronger, better-funded teams from England, France, and Ireland in European competitions and the Celtic League. The regional model aimed to consolidate the best players into fewer, stronger squads, allowing them to compete more effectively at the elite level and provide a more challenging environment for player development. This was seen as crucial for producing better players for the Welsh national team, which had also experienced a dip in performance. * Player Development: With fewer professional teams, the idea was that resources could be concentrated on developing a higher quality of player within the regional academies, leading to a stronger national squad. Good quality players who played for clubs that failed to qualify for the Heineken Cup missed out on valuable experience, which the regional system aimed to rectify. * Debt and Infrastructure: The WRU itself had significant debt, partly due to the construction of the Millennium Stadium (now Principality Stadium). The financial struggles of the clubs also impacted the overall health of Welsh rugby. The regional model was intended to create a more financially viable professional game that could contribute to the wider rugby ecosystem in Wales. The move was controversial and met with significant opposition from some traditional club supporters who felt their club identities were being eroded. Despite the initial challenges and ongoing debates about the ideal number of regions (there were originally five, then reduced to four, and there are currently discussions about further reductions to two or three), the regional system was implemented to address the fundamental issues of financial unsustainability and lack of competitiveness in Welsh professional rugby. |

Anyone remember the rebel year?
Cardiff and Swansea left the Welsh leagues to play friendly games against English opponents. Fizzled out after a while. The year after, the welsh clubs were then offered 2x entrants to English top division and 5 (?) In the league below. And the WRU turned it down...

Without a doubt professionalism is killing rugby. Less players are taught the game in school. Less community clubs. More product, less meaning.

That's more to do with government(s) policy.
There's hardly any sport at school nowadays. And for me, community clubs are victims of that policy (and other society) change.
