Many people, including myself, believed this tour should never have gone ahead given the Covid situation in SA and subsequent consequences for the trip. Unfortunately the (lack of) quality of the rugby, meaningless one sided warm up matches, the appalling social media rant by Erasmus, and the attempts on both sides to have players carded/cited all leaves a really poor taste in the mouth. I , perhaps naively, hope that international sport-in particular the Lions in rugby with the coming together of 4 countries- is about inspiring the next potential generations of players and spectators. If a non-rugby person had decided to follow the last few weeks in South Africa on and off the field would they be drawn to our sport? If I wanted to watch a kick fest where players fane injury, disrespect the officials and where coaches/mangers whinge about each other across social media and the governing body appear powerless to intervene I would follow the round ball game. Just sad.

What is that Sam Simmonds (European Rugby Player of the Year) does.to international coaches that they don't pick him.  He is head and shoulders above Conan and Faletau and will do a job against the Boks.
He must be picked and I would put Marcus Smith in. It's all or broke now.I agree with Marigold that last test kicking fest was hard to watch. Get the ball wide make their pack do some hard running and tire them out.

Spot on Marigold, that sums it up very nicely . .  even if the Lions win on Saturday this will not be a tour that is looked back on with any nostalgia by fans or players.

Perhaps the "dire-ness" explains why Channel4 have only been able to come up with 20 mins of highlights followed by 40 mins of inane and purile post match analysis - tiresome to say the least. Worst TV coverage I've seen for a good while!

At least they’re playing. It’s a very difficult time for everybody and people’s reactions to everything are exaggerated.
For me to see the backdrop to the stadium is enough. I was born about a mile away. To watch some rugby too is a bonus.
Test match rugby is often WW1 type attrition and this is no different.
The advanced TV facilities mean we see everything in minute detail, sometimes over and over.
I’m sure that Tests in former times had a similar level of acrimony, but we just didn’t see it.
Let’s just be glad it’s happening and not take it all quite so seriously.

From the video on YouTube, I don't see any conclusive evidence he was.

The atmosphere, the awful continuity and the dirge on the field have driven masses of non devotees, and some die-hards, away from the series, and possibly the sport.

Totally agree mate.  Not even into Olympics even though we seem to doing alright
I know it must be hard for lads to get up for it but we are all backing them.
Common you Lions Bring it back to all 4 nations and show them we are the best

Been involved in rugby at various levels most of my life. England were bad this is no better and all the other antics off and on the pitch just leaves me cold. The game is losing its ethos and appeal.
The Olympics whatever the sport has been a refreshing change. People are passionate and in most cases not driven by money and actually say something interesting at interview time.
Must be a masochist as I will watch Saturday but the joy of the game has almost been crushed.

Totally agree. Erasmus and to a lesser extent Gatland are a disgrace and the rugby their teams produce is even worse.

Never mind lads. Proper rugby starts in a few weeks. You know, where the guy with the whistle makes a decision and everyone just gets on with it

And the ball will go through more pairs of hands in 10 minutes than 80 minutes of most international matches

Can't help but feel uplifted at your rallying/reassurance Penda that a new (fingers crossed normal) season is nearly here - this series has managed to be both compelling and dire; having said that, the TMO has been a significant feature in the Prem recently and failed to stop some magnificent rugby being played at the tail-end of last season.

It’s the week of the decider and yet I have virtually no enthusiasm at all for Saturday. This series has been a dire, boring spectacle which has shown all the worst traits of the game at the moment. The constant kick-tennis, the agonising over decisions, the criticism of referees and the niggly tactics employed by both teams have been a stain on what is meant to be one of rugby’s great showcase events.
