"said O’Shea. “We know that only Doncaster met them this year. The discussions are, how do we improve that?"

You improve it by applying, finding out exactly what you need to do to comply with their dopey rules, and then complying if it's not too onerous.

Which is what Cov did, and are doing.

I like the idea of the playoffs, top and bottom, it potentially gets some more movement in teams if 2nd bottom can’t beat 2nd of ND1.

It also means that it keeps more interest in the league for the few that meet the Premiership criteria.

"Champ Rugby" - who on earth thought of that?

Well I like the play off ideas and the potential for 2 up from Nat 1 is an encouraging openness from the current league teams, not all of whom may have personally wanted to agree to that.

The name isn't great, but I think the Championship Podcast has referred to the league as the "Champ" for a while hasn't it, and who cares anyway.

Just pleased some people are trying a few things and trying to make improvements. It has to be better than just moaning about the status quo and doing nothing concrete to alter it.

I completely agree with you TAS63. Its great that they are trying something new and it'll add even more interest at the top end of Nat 1 next season too.

I like the idea of possibly a second National 1 side getting promoted if they can overcome a Championship side in the play-off.

I don't mind the concept of the promotion play-offs, but feel there should be something like in Australia where the side finishing top after the regular season are awarded the Premiers Shield, and the play-off winners are the Grand Final Champions. However, it is all rather pointless if the play-off winners don't meet the minimum standards. I would prefer automatic promotion, or the very least, promotion if the "Champ" side beats the Premiership side in that play-off.

I am rather cynical at the rebranding, which is full of meaningless statements and buzz words, and very little substance. Just wishful thinking, and hoping that if you say something it will come true ! I have over 40 years of this listening to this type of bullpawpaw from Marketing Depts in my career !

I read in the BBC report that they are looking to live stream matches. That would be a positive too if that happens.

The play-offs for the Premiership slot will just play into the Premier ship's hands. Imagine if team 6 won through to play Newcastle, and then either lost, the Premiership would say they werent good enough for Promotion, so let's pull up the drawbridge or if they won, they would not be time to assemble a squad of Premiership quality and they would finish bottom, giving the Premiership clubs another excuse not to let in a Champ Rugby side...

Or once their beloved WW finally achieve Prem status they shut down the play-offs and stop promotion all together…..

I did say to my mate last night that I strongly suspect that WW will be the winners next season by foul means or fair and I stick by that….

Playoffs are just an extra protectionist measure to make it harder for any new club to get to the top by putting in extra stages. Just like in Covid Championship where Sarries got to come back after half a season and playoffs just to ensure upstart Ealing didn't challenge them if the league didn't go to plan.

The play-offs at the bottom, offering the chance for the runners-up in Nat1 to go up, are definitely a positive. Was on an introductory call with the NCA last week, and there could be another play-off involving the three 2nd-place clubs at Nat2 and the 15th placed team in Nat1 in the offing.

I think these are great proposals and will improve the league and fan experience.

The ring fencing is more around P shares and ability to access central funding.

If Doncaster or WW want promotion they are going to have to find an extra £10m to stand a chance.
Run with it

Play offs is a good idea, keeping the season interesting for longer for more clubs. But funding and P shares are not mentioned in this master plan. The ridiculous minimum criteria thing means that only Doncaster could go up if they managed to jump through all the other hoops.
It would be very late in the year before any club who won the playoff would know for sure, giving them no time to assemble a squad to compete in The Premiership.
All in all, not much to shout about. Except, of course, the brilliant new name they've come up with.

I may sound a bit cynical, but bar the 2nd team in ND1 having a chance to come up, i don’t see a lot to get that excited about. On paper, the top 6 teams having something to play for towards the end of the season is a good thing, and should create some drama. However, and here’s the crux of it for me, if we have a situation again next year where only 1 or 2 Championship Clubs meet the MSC, then the whole premise of the format change is a worthless gimmick. Because if hardly any teams in the division are eligible to achieve the prize that we’re supposedly playing for, then the whole thing loses any relevance.

I’m massively in favour of promotion, any club in whatever league should be able to aspire to get to the top. However, unless there’s a genuinely affordable and sustainable pathway for clubs to achieve it, and then be competitive in the Premiership, it’s not viable.

If it’s a 31 game season, only for the team that wins it to be denied promotion, then what is the point?.
