Ealing Trailfinders to face Chinnor: A line up that I can only call a bit odd. Good to see Matt Cornish back in the squad after an injury, but why make 7 changes from a side that won 89-17 last weekend? Also, very weird to go in with only a single fly half when you are doing a 5:3 split. Fingers crossed.

When you have a squad like Ealing's and are playing a newly promoted part-time side like Chinnor on plastic, you could probably make 15 changes and still win by 30+ points. It gives game time to fringe squad players. I have personally been impressed with how well Chinnor have conducted themselves and played in their debut season at Level 2, so my observations above are by no means intended to be critical of them.

Hampson started the game at Chinnor for Ealing back in January. I heard the arrangement was he wouldn't be involved in coaching Chinnor the week before the games but he could play for Ealing.

Ealing have scored 92, 63, 95, 55, 84 & 82 points in their 7 home wins. A 30 point loss would probably be a good result for Chinnor !

I don't think there is any problem, the sides are very far apart... now Chinnor spring a surprise. With regards to Ealing changing so many players, their squad is huge and full of quality. With the league pretty much wrapped up with 8 points from 4 games needed it also gives you an opportunity to try out some of the other players. Ealing could put out their 2nd team and it would still be in the top 4, their 3rd team probably would be top 6.

It seems to be a bit of a theme for Nottingham of recent seasons, start off strong and towards the top end of the season (with enough points to be safe from relegation) before drifting down the league to finish lower mid-table.

Great day out at Nottingham RFC …. a good win on the road ….. it has been coming . Nottingham were flummoxed by Caldy’s expansive play and some brilliant scores including a hat trick for the electric winger Will Robinson. Some delightful and interesting people including generous and welcoming hosts Mark and Louise who were a joy to talk with about everything under the sun including gardening, the root systems of ericaceous plants, eventing, fishing, manta ray and the exquisite joys of Blossom Hill Cabernet which was the star prize in the guess the score competition. This exceptional tipple was won by the delighted Caldy Chairman Mark…… he has decided to keep the bottle to share with the Nottingham committee at Paton Field next season. I don’t need pre match champagne 🍾 to make me garrulous but it certainly helps so apologies to Mark and Louise if I talked more snakefruits than usual. However, the unexpected joy for me, Bob Cook and Ben Moore was catching up with the 'Vicar' Andrew Vertigan who was assessing and scoring the referee Andy Wigley. In previous long ago seasons the Vicar was one of the stand out officials. His entertaining and inspiring communications enlivened match days especially when officiating one of his favourite delinquent tight head props the great Derek Salisbury. Nostalgia is not underrated......I would pay good money to see and hear a video with enhanced sound of the Vicar marching back Degsy and Caldy 10 metres against Harrogate after an indiscretion by the giant prop. The Vicar was certain about the initial offence and had the whistle, Degsy far less so. The outcome, Harrogate's brilliant stand off Callum Irvine kicks a last minute penalty, that was brought just within range by the Vicar's firm handling, and Caldy lose the game. If your surname is Salisbury it still rankles even after some 15 years!!  Yesterday at the Bay was a truly splendid day out with gorgeous weather, the most enjoyable of company and a hugely entertaining game of rugby. For me this is what the camaraderie of rugby is all about. I very much look forward to renewing my acquaintance with the engaging and welcoming Mark and Louise and the knowledgeable Val, Ken and Brian from Nottingham. Plus the effervescent Vicar who is always partial to an apple crumble and custard and always a joy to engage with .......unless of course your surname is Salisbury! ------------- ''The future isn't what it used to be'' |

HT Ampthill (1 try) 7-29 Blues (5 tries) Pretty much one way, Blues being dominant and have the edge in the scrum, maul and open play. Ampthill’s try came from a dropped Blues attack.

The Vicar is a larger than life personality that added to the game rather than getting in the way of attractive rugby. The game needs brave and characterful officials that augment the on field entertainment. His young charges like Andy Wigley are lucky to have the Vicar as a mentor. Referee was horrible, probably cost Chinnor 14 points. Missed a blatant offsides on an intercept by Craig Hampson. |

Thanks gerg_861. Also, and not giving a clear knock-on in the build up Ealing's second try.......and with a penalty advantage to Chinnor, Ealing are given a penalty as Chinnor attempt to cross the line. With the benefit of watching the replay, the decision against Chinnor for crossing when they tried to run the ball near the end was also baffling.

After an error strewn first half by the knights, quite a bit forced by a strong Coventry pack, the Head Coach kicked the hairdryer at HT and a different team ran out in the 2nd half to score 28 unanswered points to leave the home support ecstatic and the Cov supporters dumbfounded.
